Fallout Cards Impression

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by trainmastergt 38 Comments

Hi Mark,I just wanted to say that I am impressed by the Fallout cards so far. I love both Junk tokens and the Rads mechanic. Dr. Who felt like a bit of a misstep for the UB series from a design perspective, but Fallout seems pretty great so far. I am excited to see the rest of the set! Please keep up the excellent work!

I’m glad you’re enjoying it.I should point out that Doctor Who design has a lot of fans on this blog.

Timing of Tamiyo Card Reveal

New 26 Feb 2022 Asked by basketofpuppies 60 Comments

I’ve thought it over for a bit before messaging you: I think that spoiling Tamiyo so early was a misstep. I believe it would have hit much more effectively if it was spoiled at the tail end of spoiler season.

The only way to do that would have been to postpone the end of the story to the end of the previews, which contradicts the feedback we’ve been getting about having the story before the previews.

Un-format Ban Lists

New 20 Oct 2018 Asked by sircaelum-deactivated20190608 33 Comments

The last ask begs another important question. Do un-formats have the same ban lists as their counterparts? Is Leovold banned in un-commander? Is Mental Misstep banned in un-modern?

Yes. Un-formats are formats with all their restrictions plus silver bordered cards.

Expectations vs. Reality

New 18 Nov 2017 Asked by scribonia 133 Comments

Don't you think that Unstable "setting a new precedent" in tone and execution is a pretty big disappointment for those who rallied in support of it for years? I'm liking the set just fine, but I think it was a huge misstep to not give vanilla/black bordered cards trinket text at the least: This doesn't feel at all like an un-set to me--just a new way to play the game (contraptions).

Cards that have been revealed so far: - Card you toss
- Card making you throw dice on the table
- Card that cares if it’s dark outside
- Card you sneak into play
- Cards that make you involve people not playing in your game
- Card that turns half the game into a Two-Headed Giant
- Card that lets you name keyword abilities from throughout history of Magic
- Card that moves a creature to another game
- Card that changes between two different cards in any zone
- Card that changes numbers on cards
- Card that destroys players
- Card with a subgame
- Card that staples creatures together
- Card that copies whole text boxes
- Cards that care about watermarks
- Card that stops state-based actions
- Card that cares about capital letters
- Card where you play Hangman
- Card that lets creatures in graveyards attack or block
- Card that lets you open a booster pack and bring cards from it into the game
- Card that attacks during another player’s combat
- Card that mechanically cares about flavor text
- Card that cares about what’s in the art Not to mention a major mechanic that uses a separate deck and another one that overwrites text by covering it up. How in the world is this not a wacky expansion?

Eldrazi As-Fan Misunderstanding

New 04 Jul 2016 Asked by ceta-maelstrom 41 Comments

Just realized that because every transform card turns into an eldrazi, the as-fan for them is almost 100% barring Ulrich. Doesn't that seem like a misstep when your article mentioned you didn't want as many eldrazi in EMN?

You misunderstand what As-Fan means. It represents how many cards of a subset are in an average booster. The Eldrazi in Eldritch Moon is above 1 but that’s much lower than the As-Fan in Battle for Zendikar block.

SOI Sales Performance

New 20 Jun 2016 Asked by emu-on-the-loose 87 Comments

SOI has been a great return to form after the misstep of BFZ block, but has it sold well? I hope it hasn't been punished for BFZ's mistakes.

Shadows over Innistrad (and Battle for Zendikar) is selling well.

Misstep Balancing

New 15 Jun 2016 Asked by vhoba 27 Comments

Would Mental Misstep have been less game breaking if it had cost 2 phyrexian mana instead?

It wasn’t an effect we should have done. Magic is not better for every color having access to counterspells.

Phyrexian Mana Mistake

New 15 Jun 2016 Asked by eot-impulse 35 Comments

Was the idea of Phyrexian mana a bad idea, or just certain implementations of it (Misstep et al)?

The color break stuff was a mistake for sure.

Storytelling Misstep

New 29 Mar 2016 Asked by ilgreven 27 Comments

From the "muddying what actually happened" reply, do you consider the whole Mirrodin Pure/New Phyrexia tease a misstep in storytelling?

If we had made both sets, that would have muddied the issue. There was only one outcome which we were very clear about.

Mental Misstep Query

New 31 Dec 2015 Asked by siegeerson 18 Comments

im a fairly new player and i was searching on gatherer through the cards that cost phyrexian mana and i came across mental misstep, what was the thinking behind the card?

I tried to stop that card and failed. I think the thought behind it was development trying to make an exciting Phyrexian mana card.

Mental Misstep Impact

New 18 Jun 2015 Asked by dukepaulus 30 Comments

When you designed Mental Misstep, did you imagine it would have such a big impact on Vintage?

Not only did I not make it. I tried very, very hard to kill it. Unsuccessfully, obviously.

Mental Misstep Concern

New 22 Apr 2015 Asked by landgrafb 37 Comments

I understand that it is already generally considered a mistake, but why print Mental Misstep? Countering spells doesn't seem like something "an artifact could do".

It was a mistake I tried to stop and failed.

Mental Misstep Feedback

New 30 Mar 2015 Asked by the-batlord 27 Comments

What are your thoughts on Mental misstep? I feel like a phyrexian counter was a good idea but feel like it was poorly implemented. a U/P U/P counter with downside might have been a better idea and would have not thrashed the meta in legacy and extended.

I didn’t want us to do a counterspell as it’s a good example of something we wouldn’t do with a colorless cost.

Not a fan. Tried to stop it and failed.

Mental Misstep Ban

New 26 Nov 2014 Asked by cora-ora-ora-zone 108 Comments

Today is my birthday! Can you tell me what was the thinking that was put into mental misstep and why it banned in legacy?

“We think players will like this.” and “Oops.”

Last Major Set Misstep

New 16 Aug 2014 Asked by jordanmunson 25 Comments

Hey MaRo, I was just discussing Magic's fantastic track record as of the last handful of blocks, and I was wondering what you might consider the last real blunder or major misstep for Magic was. I've been struggling to come up with one since things in Kamigawa (which while not ideal, was not a disaster IMO).

Coldsnap was our last major blunder in my mind.

Printing Free Spells

New 26 Jan 2014 Asked by normalsebacean 10 Comments

Have you guys ever considered not printing "free" spells again or things that make spells free--like mental misstep or omniscience? I like those cards but they do seem a little unfair.

We don’t make many these days but players, like all humans, do so love free things.

Interest in Kamigawa

New 03 Nov 2013 Asked by rhinotmetos-deactivated20180404 6 Comments

I was a history major in college, so few things in Magic interest me more than Magic's history; and for whatever reason, I am endlessly fascinated by the Kamigawa block (I think because it was a valiant misstep). Ever consider casting a few more pods about the subject, perhaps touching on Betrayers and Saviors?

I will get there eventually.

Admitting Design Misjudgments

New 27 Jul 2013 Asked by kobayashicircle-deactivated2019 20 Comments

We sometimes hear about how you fought tooth and nail against something only to lose and you think it was a mistake to this day or have been proven right (re: Mental Misstep, which prompted this question), but are there any examples where you fought against something tooth and nail, were beaten, then it turned out your were totally wrong and the thing was awesome?

I tried to stop Akroma as I thought her abilities didn’t match her flavor in the story and were a bit boring for such a high profile card. I tried to get it changed, failed and she has gone on to be wildly popular.

Mental Misstep Insights

New 27 Jul 2013 Asked by gpapyrus 18 Comments

You said, "Countering things without paying any mana is very powerful." I agree. Did Mental Misstep solidify this thinking or did you know this prior to printing Mental Misstep? (I'm thinking ya'll didn't intend to make a card that would get banned from all the eternal formats before it even rotated.)

I tried very hard to keep Mental Misstep from being printed. I obviously failed in my task.
