Concerns Over MTG Foundations

New 02 Jul 2024 Asked by shahrathestoryteller 3 Comments

Hi Mark! Hope your preparations for Independence Day are going swell! One of the things I'm worried about regarding MTG Foundations is that it may have too strong of an effect on the design of future sets (e.g. the strength of 3-mana Green creatures will be restricted due to Llanowar Elves) and that the power level of certain cards might be too large to the point where cards will overstay their welcome (e.g. the reason why 2WW board wipes without downsides have not been printed for a decade). There's also the worry that it might get tiresome to see the same cards for 5 years, as there's only some times you can see Omniscience cheated out that it becomes tiresome. With all these concerns in mind, how pushed is MTG Foundations in terms of power level i.e. is it intended to include staple cards that will define the meta for 5 years or just provide a baseline from which design to work off of?

A lot of time was spent on Foundation. And the knowledge that it was going to be in Standard for a while was well known.

Thoughts on Omniscience

New 20 Jun 2024 Asked by justwantedtoknowstuff 27 Comments

Hi, Mark. Have you ever wished to be omniscient? You could do a lot of good, but the burden of knowledge could be too much.
Also, you could do market research with your brain!

I think omniscience would probably be a curse.

Blue's Ramp/Fix Capabilities

New 23 May 2022 Asked by jimharbor 44 Comments

If blue isn't supposed ramp/fix why can it get free cast effects. Basically why is Treasure out of pie for Blue while Omniscience is, when Omniscience does what Treasure does but better?

Casting cards out of the library for free is a different thing than ramping. Just because you can do one effect doesn’t mean you get to do every effect that can be thought of as similar in some regard.

Potential for Green Omniscience

Can Mono Green get Omniscience? Isn't that just the ultimate ramp card?

Green could do it with creatures, but not any card type.

Art for Omniscience

New 14 Aug 2020 Asked by myfavoriteflavorisblue 32 Comments

I was looking through the wallpapers Wizards makes available on their site (Thanks!) and saw the art for Omniscience titled "Jace Beleren Planeswalking". Do you know if this was the premise of the art description? Is that a canonical depiction or more an artist's interpretation?

My guess is it was the temporary name sent to the artist.

Blind Eternities Misconception

New 20 Jan 2020 Asked by anistonangel 54 Comments

Actually Omniscience from 2013 shows Jace walking in the blind eternity and the many ways a Planeswalker can take to travel to a single plane. Also Venser in the comic says the know the road to walk into Mirrodin.

That’s not the Blind Eternities as you can’t walk in the Blind Eternities as, once again, it isn’t a place. Venser was talking about knowing how to get to Mirrodin. The “road” was metaphorical.

Praising Omniscience Draft

Can you tell the Arena team the Omniscience draft was awesome? It was a weird format where things I normally ignored were a lot better since it was free :)

Will do.

Addressing White's Draw

New 27 Oct 2018 Asked by queenoftheskye 39 Comments

In my opinion drawing off of small creatures shouldn't be a color pie break in white. The other colors get so much in terms of card draw. If blue can get Omniscience of all things, then white can have this instance of card draw. Close the power gap Mark!

White’s whole schtick is it has the most answers, but the worst ability to draw them all. We’re experimenting with card drawing where it forces narrow deck building to prevent it from drawing all its answers, but small creatures when it’s the absolute best color at small creatures and one of its major archetypes is building a deck full of small creatures is not forcing it to build a narrow deck. It’s like saying red can destroy enchantments, but only when it has a deck dedicating to dealing a lot of damage. : )

Omniscience Flavor Failure?

New 20 Jun 2018 Asked by neouch 47 Comments

Do you consider "Omniscience" a flavour failure? I've always been annoyed by the card because it means "to know everything". In my opinion, the card should have been called "omnipotence". "Omniscience" makes so much more sense on the card Enter the Infinite.

Omnipotence is black’s ideal not blue’s.

Birthday Singleton Deck Fun

New 12 Aug 2017 Asked by flamepenguin3 57 Comments

Maro! Today is my birthday! Instead of trivia I wanted to share my modern fnm experience tonight. I played a singleton deck composed solely of modern legal masterpiece series cards (60 cards plus 15 card sideboard). I only won 1 match but it was the most fun I've had playing Magic in awhile. At the end of the last game I had Omniscience, Hazoret, and The Locust God out. Talk about a board state!

That sounds fun. Happy Birthday!

Playing Lands as Spells

New 27 Jun 2017 Asked by forcemeat-ghost 18 Comments

If I have Richard Garfield, Phd in play, and an effect lets me cast a spell without paying its mana cost (like say Omniscience), can I play a land as Ancestral Vision?

No.

Eldrazi Names Origin

New 06 Sep 2015 Asked by disappointedreader-deactivated2 74 Comments

How do we know the names of the Eldrazi titans? I don't see any "Hi, my name is Emrakul" badges, and I'm not aware of any evidence of them communicating.

If you look very close, they have little name tags. For my more serious answer I’ll go with third person omniscience. Ask Doug about within world.

EDH Color Pie Integrity

New 16 Feb 2015 Asked by schrodingers-mind 41 Comments

Would you say that due to the nature of EDH as a single-ton eternal format focused on multi-player, makes the printing of cards like Chaos Warp, if not ok, then at least less of a breaking of the rules, provided that they are only legal in that format? E.g. Because colors will straight up lose to certain cards if they don't have a way to deal with them. E.g. Aura-shards shuts down most mono-red strategies, and Omniscience is a straight up win if you can't deal with it.

I do not. No format’s existence is justification for breaking color pie. Colors are supposed to have vulnerabilities. It’s an important part of the design of Magic.

Omnipresence Color Theory

If omniscience is Blue and omnipotence is Black, what color is omnipresence?

Green, I guess.

Names and Meanings

New 24 May 2014 Asked by dacke 21 Comments

How come Arcanis the Omnipotent brings you more cards (representing knowledge), and Omniscience lets you cast spells for free (representing power)? Shouldn't they be Arcanis the Omniscient and Omnipotence?

The card was originally calked Omnipotence but that is the ultimate goal of black not blue so the name was changed.

Printing Free Spells

New 26 Jan 2014 Asked by normalsebacean 10 Comments

Have you guys ever considered not printing "free" spells again or things that make spells free--like mental misstep or omniscience? I like those cards but they do seem a little unfair.

We don’t make many these days but players, like all humans, do so love free things.

Ultimate Battle Win

New 06 Aug 2013 Asked by mr-gus-the-mighty 23 Comments

If I have on the battlefield Omniscience, Platinum Angel, Sigarda, Avacyn, Asceticism , Melira, Witchbane Orb, and Tamiyo's Ultimate at the same time, do I win?

You do in the OPASA AMWOTU format. : )

Color Goals

New 20 Jul 2013 Asked by philbratcher 22 Comments

So blue's goal is omniscience, black's goal is omnipotence, red's goal is freedom, white's goal is order...what's green's eternal goal? Is it preservation?

Green’s ultimate goal is growth. It was nature to just be able to do its thing uninterrupted.

Red's Design Challenge

New 22 Jun 2013 Asked by lordspasms-blog 10 Comments

If there were an omniscience-sized hole in red's design skeleton, could the same effect be printed as red with a different name, like "free will"?

It’s a dangerous trap to justify mechanics stretching with names because you can always find a name that sounds good.

Unique Card Design Enjoyment

New 11 Dec 2012 Asked by grodytoadie-blog 15 Comments

Who designed Omniscience, Worldfire, and Door to Nothingness? And how excited are they to see those cards actually seeing some competitive play in the form of the deck, "OmniDoor Thragfire"? I must say, this is one thing I love about Magic. Everyone writes these cards off as unplayable or casual only, and someone finds the perfect concoction of spells to make them actually work. It's utterly brilliant!

Aaron Forsythe and I designed Door to Nothingness although the design version said “Destroy target creature or player.” I’m not sure who designed the other two. One of my favorite things about Magic is how no card can ever truly be written off. Cards can be horrible up until the day they break the format.
