Riding the Dilu Horse's Design Intent

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by presidentark 23 Comments

Was Riding the Dilu Horse lacking the "Until end of turn" rider deliberate or not? I'm trying to settle an argument; I'm on the side of "it was a mistake that left in because of the negligible impact of 'fixing' it"; the other party is on side "It was deliberate because it makes it function as a pseudoenchantment, when Portal was intended to lack that type".

I didn’t work on that set, but I believe is was intentional to mimic an enchantment.

Possibility for Treasure Creature

New 30 Mar 2022 Asked by mjawadb 28 Comments

Mimic can be a Treasure Creature!

The one rule we have for artifact subtypes tied to tokens is that the creature does something akin to what the token does, although it doesn’t have to be identical.

Mimic Vat Trivia

New 29 Aug 2019 Asked by pfayze 38 Comments

Hey Mark, it’s my birthday! Do you have any trivia on Mimic Vat, or any other unheard information about anything you’d like to share? Thank you!

When we brought back imprint in Scars of Mirrodin, the goal was to try an innovate with it. When we made Mimic Vat, we were trying to make a creature copying artifact, but one that played differently. We did that two ways. One, it could only copy a creature temporarily, and two, it could only copy the last creature to have died. Happy Birthday!

Tribal Cards Future

New 26 Sep 2017 Asked by axitreii-blog 34 Comments

Are pick your tribe tribal cards like Adaptive Automaton and Vanquisher's Banner confined to tribal sets in the future or can we see them more in core sets or odd places (like metallic mimic in Kaladesh)?

I think it’s something we’ll see time to time in non-tribal themed sets.

Progenitor Mimic Trivia

New 27 Jun 2017 Asked by soulbondinfect 28 Comments

It's my Birthday today and I remembered to ask for some trivia this year. Have you got any trivia on my favourite card, Progenitor Mimic? If not, just a Happy Birthday will be fine :)

I think the earliest version was an enchantment that just made clone tokens each turn, but it got weird if the card it was locked on went away, so we made it a clone to help clarify what it was copying.Happy Birthday!

Green Clone Mechanics

New 09 Jun 2016 Asked by arithallan-deactivated20230503 19 Comments

Is Green allowed to clone? I didn't think so, but Progenitor Mimic is a clone with Followed Footsteps, so I'm not sure

Green does a little bit usually with token copies or getting a duplicate copy out of your hand or library.

Goblin Test Pilots Chaos

New 25 May 2016 Asked by mariopiecetheatre-blog 81 Comments

Happy Birthday you old coot, here's a funny bit of magic that happened during the Dragon's Maze draft. Being the dashing rogue that I am I drafted as many Goblin Test Pilots as possible. I ended up playing against someone who pulled a Progenitor Mimic. Long story short there was over 20 Test Pilots on the board between the two of us before we activated them all, one in response to another. Pretty much the whole store gathered around the table to watch everything resolve.

Color Pie and Cloning

New 15 Apr 2016 Asked by notheremaybe 25 Comments

So are you meaning to say that Progenitor Mimic and Altered Ego are out of colour pie? Or answering about blue/green hybrid clone?

I was talking about MonoGreen. Once Blue gets involved, Green can clone all it likes.

Clone Cards Cycle Status

New 29 Dec 2015 Asked by eternalcheechako 20 Comments

Do you consider "dack's duplicate"(UR), "evil twin"(UB) and "progenitor mimic"(UG) to be part of an unfinished cycle? Is a UW clone on a short list?

I do not consider it a cycle.

Progenitor Mimic Trivia

New 08 Aug 2015 Asked by tonyredgravedmc 31 Comments

Hi, my birthday was Aug 4, trying again since my bday Q was missed this year and the last, could I get trivia on one of my all-time favorite cards: Progenitor Mimic? Thank you so much.

Progenitor Mimic was us messing around with two similar abilities that appear in Blue and Green. Blue gets cloning while Green is allowed to make token copies of its stuff. Often on multicolor cards, we like mixing two similar mechanics together to make something new. Also, it felt very Simic-y. Happy Birthday!

Mimic Vat Insights

New 25 Feb 2014 Asked by plex4242 21 Comments

Hey Mark! It's my birthday! Can we get some trivia on one of my favorite cards - Mimic Vat!

When we brought back imprint in Scars of Mirrodin block, one of my goals was to stretch a little how we used imprint. Mimic Vat was made with the idea of having an imprint card where the imprint card changed over time.

Progenitor Mimic Mechanics

New 22 Feb 2014 Asked by demitricamperos 14 Comments

Un-rules question! If my foil Progenitor Mimic targets a non-foil creature, do they token copies I make at upkeep get the buff from Super Secret Tech?

The copies take on the qualities of what they copy and in silver-bordered world this includes foil-ness.

Clone Attack Clarification

New 08 May 2013 Asked by vedalkensamurai 5 Comments

Can you attack with a Clone of a Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug the turn before you cast it? If so, do you have to pay 3R or 3U during your next turn (reminder text suggests 3R)? If 3R, is this a good way to get a Progenitor Mimic out cheap? If so, can you attack with the token copies the turn before they come into play? If so, do you have to pay their mana costs or not?

EDIT: I got this wrong the first time so let me get this correct. Superhaste is not haste. What it does is it allows you to put the card from your hand and attack with it the turn before you play it. By the time you can clone it, it is too late to be able to invoke the super haste. So, you spend 3U and get a red 3/1 with super haste, an ability you will not be able to use. You do not though have to spend 3R next turn.

Set Design Nuances

New 07 Jun 2012 Asked by ihititwithmyaxe 5 Comments

I like that I can find new depth and secrets to a set even months or years after its release. The nuance you have put into the products, the easter eggs and the subtleties, are very rewarding. Today I learned that Inistrad Block has 666 cards, and that R&D might have printed Mimic Vat as an homage or update to Isochron Scepter. I hope Return to Ravnica has just as much nuance to it.

I’m not allowed to say anything about Return to Ravnica yet so I’ll just say I think you’ll be happy.
