Anti-Gravehate Card Problems

New 05 May 2024 Asked by storyofawerewolf 23 Comments

Hey Mark, random graveyard related question for you. So I understand once upon a time, decks like Dredge were pretty powerful. But nowadays, grave hate is ripe across all formats, its cheap, even free such as torments crypt and it really blocks grave based shenanigans massively. So me question to you is, why is there no anti gravehate cards? Like for example a zombie that reads "cards in graveyards can't be exile" or somet like that. It seems an obvious choice of ability so aye, please inform?

Permanent ongoing answers to answers tend to cause problems more than solve them.

Fate of Original Tarkir

New 24 Apr 2024 Asked by someonee404-blog 25 Comments

After Sarkhan's timey-wimey shenanigans in Fate Reforged, what happened to the original timeline of Tarkir?

It doesn’t exist anymore. It got rewritten with the new timeline.

Karn Artifact Consideration

New 14 Apr 2024 Asked by truthposts 53 Comments

Hi Mark, when Karn was first made a planeswalker, was there any consideration given to making him be an Artifact Planeswalker? If so, why not? Was it just type line length, or were there mechanical considerations?

There was. It’s just significantly harder to balance, and we would have to cost him more to balance for the artifact shenanigans, so we made the decision that planeswalkerness overrides other card types and sub types (why Ajani isn’t a Cat).

Isocron Scepter Mechanics

New 31 Mar 2024 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 33 Comments

Any concern that Isocron Scepter and similar cards will make some of the Spree cards too repeatable, while the additional cost still have to be paid the cheap mv can allow for some serious shenanigans.

If older mechanics break in larger formats, we’ll fix it with banning. The present can’t be held hostage of the past.

UB Full Sets Ideas

New 01 Mar 2024 Asked by clumsynotdrunk 23 Comments

UB Wishlist!
Full sets / commander:Warcraft: such a depth of lore and characters to mechanically build out into magic, enough material to creatively support multiple sets IMO. Such as Horde vs Alliance, Burning Legion’s invasion(s), Light vs Void, General fantasy adventure shenanigans not already covered by dnd, etcNaruto: would result in some oddball designs that I think could be super fun, plus being to tap into the anime market is always nice. Star Wars: it’s Star Wars and it’s amazing. The Last of Us: ticks both the “prestige TV” and “AAA video game” boxes while also melding magic with one of the most emotionally powerful properties in recent memory. Secret Lair:The Simpsons: having cards to pair with your color article about each family member’s color would be the best.Buffy the Vampire Slayer: fun nostalgia vibes and also so I can see the creature type “Slayer.”

Thanks.

Subgame Rules Question

New 21 Dec 2023 Asked by j-waffles 26 Comments

UN-RULES QUESTION!!! I cast enter the dungeon. During the subgame, I play R&D’s secret lair, and also play revelation. Am I allowed to look at/play cards from my subgame hand?

The hand that gets revealed by the Revelation is your subgame hand. And yes, you are allowed to play cards from it. I’m not getting what shenanigans you’re up to.

Naming Lazav Discount

New 03 Nov 2023 Asked by donalton 68 Comments

Hey mark, question about Vorthos naming shenanigans: If I name Lazav, am I allowed to discount every card that depicts a Ravnican citizen? Since we can't actually prove that any of those cards aren't Lazav in disguise, I think we should stay safe and assume that they are all Lazav, and therefore, give me the discount.

The card has definitively be Lazav, not potentially be Lazav.

Cascade vs Discover Mechanics

New 01 Nov 2023 Asked by captainmackaymouse 52 Comments

What is it that makes Cascade easier to manipulate through deckbuilding than Discover? It seems like they use the same wording- I would say the advantage to Cascade is it's a cast trigger

Cascade is linked to the mana cost whereas discover can be any number. This makes it easier to balance and prevent deck building shenanigans.

Green Iconics and Lands

New 30 Sep 2023 Asked by doesthewormthinkthatsthewayweall 26 Comments

Is there any merit to the argument that green's iconic to me could be much more entwined with lands, both mechanically and flavorfully, but the shift away from printing both competitively costed and frequent interaction with an opponent's lands would make this difficult to experiment with? Hydras feel like a payoff or consequence of all the green land shenanigans, which is much more indirect than something directly involved with lands.

Produce a lot of mana (part of which can be land fetching), cast a giant Hydra that can stomp over your opponent. That’s pretty green and ties into green’s strength with mana.

Playing Lands on Turns

New 09 Sep 2023 Asked by thebansheeoflamordia 20 Comments

If you somehow played a card that allows you to play an additional land each turn (IE Enter the Unknown) on an opponent's speed (such as via Teferi shenanigans), could you play Dryad Arbor on your opponent's turn?

Lands, by the current rules definition, I believe can only be played on your turn.

Turtle Trivia

New 05 Sep 2023 Asked by dude1818 47 Comments

Hi Mark. My birthday was in August, but due to Tumblr shenanigans I wasn't able to send you a question. Now that I can, could I please get some trivia on turtles or tortoises in Magic?

Calcite Snapper’s playtest name was Convertible Turtle. We tried to make that the printed name, but were unsuccessful.Happy Belated Birthday!

Printing Challenges

New 30 Aug 2023 Asked by faerross 30 Comments

"Printing process shenanigans"I know anything extra you ask a printer to do costs more money to design/contract/test -- and efforts to optimize printer technology aren't always worth it.The discussion on mixing black/silver border cards has my mind down a rabbit hole. If you were able to include a row of cards rotated 180 degrees, you would have cards with silver 'bottoms' and black 'tops.' Theoretically, this could allow different 'splits'. Which obstacle would be more challenging to overcome:

  • Printing blanks with rows rows of 'upside down' card backs. (And then ensuring those were kept separate from regular blanks.)
  • Righting any inverted rows prior to placement in boosters.
  • Something else entirely.

Unless we were okay with cards being upside down in booster packs, we couldn’t do this. There’s no way to rotate cards from the printing sheet (that I’m aware of).

Backup Ability Limits

New 19 Apr 2023 Asked by sparkdragon42 26 Comments

You said that granting backup to any creatures could cause some shenanigans that you didn't want. Can you give an example?

Allowing backup to grant grafted/copied abilities (aka ones not native to the creature) was the shenanigans I was talking about.

Back-Up Mechanic Limitations

New 01 Apr 2023 Asked by jml1218 31 Comments

Howdy Mark, i know its early but can i get a maybe on a card giving other creatures Backup? :)

The reason back-up only grants the word printed on the card was to prevent some shenanigans that were causing problems. That type of card would undo all that work.

Battles Entry State

New 30 Mar 2023 Asked by bboyskely-blog 34 Comments

Do battles enter "tapped"? Asking for shenanigans like clock of omens + mycosynth lattice

The enter untapped, but being tapped doesn’t have any mechanical relevance.

Template Preference Effects

New 17 Feb 2023 Asked by allsaintsday 35 Comments

One thought I as had on tap vs once-per-turn, that I haven’t seen on your blog (though I may have just missed it) is the templating. Tap comes upfront; whereas once-per-turn comes at the end.The order “{2}: do a long winded and complicated thing. Only activate once per turn.” feels like you get to the end and have something taken away in a way that “once per turn, {2}: do a long-winded and complicated thing” wouldn’t. (Though doing it *exactly* that way, you run into other templating issues.)But I do also think a lot of it is that no matter where you put it, “tap” reads as an invitation to shenanigans, whereas “once per turn” reads as a No Jank Allowed sign. (Which is, alas, kind of the point of the more stringent restriction, in terms of game balance.)

I do understand psychologically why it upsets some players, and if we can find a better template that hits the other needs of the card (things like making it as easy to use as possible), we’ll seriously consider it. The larger message here is some player’s not likely something isn’t always enough of an impetus to change something. There are a lot of requirements that a game component like templating has that have to be addressed. Yes, we keep notes like this in mind, because we’ll fix it if we find a good solution, but oftentimes there isn’t a better option (again that meets all the required needs).

Comet the Dog Theory

New 15 Dec 2022 Asked by cheseeh-blog 52 Comments

Can I get a maybe on Comet the Dog Planeswalker being the mastermind behind all of Phyrexia's shenanigans?

Maybe he’s a Bad Dog. : )

Future Historical Sets

New 30 Nov 2022 Asked by polluxr 52 Comments

If/When: another premier set set in the past? (preferably without the need for time travel shenanigans)

When. The Brothers’ War used time travel pretty minimally. Teferi merely witnessed the past. He didn’t interfere with it in any way.

Attraction Junkyard Rules

New 28 Sep 2022 Asked by thefnitalian 15 Comments

If you animate an attraction with say Tezzeret's Touch, then activate Shapesharer into the attraction and sacrifice the Shapesharer with Altar of Dementia, will the Shapesharer go to the junkyard? In short, is there a way to get an attraction to go anywhere but the junkyard on death or get something that isn't an attraction into the junkyard with shenanigans?

No. Attractions only go to the junkyard, and only Attractions are put in the junkyard.

Form of the Second Sun

New 27 Sep 2022 Asked by erfunk 111 Comments

If players are Planeswalkers by lore, and Form of the Approach of the Second Sun makes someone into a card, can we be interacted with by cards like Garth or Call the Gatewatch? Or if it's just flavor, then what do we taste like once we're a card?

The players are planeswalkers, so if you get made into a card by Form of the Approach of the Second Sun, you are a planeswalker card and can be interacted with as such. Note that if you leave the library or the library get shuffled, you stop being a card.Yes, many shenanigans can happen with Yet Another Aether Vortex (provided you find a way to not die to 0 loyalty).
