Harpy

Reprint Request

New 02 Dec 2023 Asked by razorofartorias 26 Comments

Hi Mark! I hope you are having a great weekend. I don't know if you can pass this message to the team that handles reprints to put in the to-reprint list the ten common cards that still had a old frame on the Pauper Cube: Deftblade Elite, Phantom Nomad, Capsize, Miscalculation, Ashes to Ashes, Pestilence, Tortured Existence, Silver Drake, Temporal Spring and Cavern Harpy. Thanks!

I’ll pass the list along.

Creature Type Trivia

New 14 Jan 2023 Asked by irlnautica 32 Comments

It's my birthday! By the ancient rites, could I get some trivia about hags or harpies (two of my favourite underused creature types)?

Doing a little research, it turns out I made the first harpy in Magic, Screeching Harpy in Tempest. I was just trying to find a flavorful thing to put on a 2/2 creature with flying and regeneration.Happy Birthday!

Siren vs Harpy Game Difference

In MTG, what's the difference between a Siren and a Harpy?

Sirens sing a song that lure you to your death. Harpies don’t do that at all.

Blue-Black Mechanic Limits

New 20 Jul 2019 Asked by chrislkimball 36 Comments

Hi Mark, catching up on the podcast for the War of the Spark breakdown, you said that blue-black is hard because it doesn't have a lot of mechanical crossover past mill and discard. What about bounce? Cavern harpy, Sedraxis Alchemist, ninjutsu seem to imply a precedent for it? Thanks hope you enjoy comic Con.

Black can’t bounce stuff.

What's the difference between a Harpy, a Siren, and a Bird that is an Aven?

Desire for New Tokens

New 18 Feb 2017 Asked by smaruc-blog 14 Comments

it would be nice to see more different tokens in black like harpy's and bats, zombies are overdone and i don't like them.

Okay, two people don’t like Zombies.

Hypnotic Specter Trivia

New 11 May 2015 Asked by derplingvonderp 46 Comments

For my birthday, I'd like trivia on my first favorite card: Hypnotic Specter. If that is too old, do Cavern Harpy :)

For many of the early years many thought Hypnotic Specter was overpowered. Time showed the true culprit was Dark Ritual. Happy Birthday!

Basics vs Tokens

New 10 Jun 2014 Asked by gutterstorm 25 Comments

What kind of market research do you guys have on basic lands in booster packs? I personally would prefer it be either always a token or a foil. I mean I can't imagine anyone builds up basics by just buying packs and I always find myself more in need of the tokens. (seeing as I just went and bought 15 harpy tokens because I find more lands than tokens)

Tokens appear on the back of the ad card and are not considered one of the “15 cards” in the pack.

Starfish Opinion Change

New 10 Apr 2014 Asked by tehpoker 155 Comments

You are acting all pro-Starfish all of a sudden, but when I asked you for some more Starfish in Magic back in 2011 you responded with, and I quote, "Starfish can suck it." (I can't link to the question here, but googling that phrase will get you there.)

Called out! Here’s the original post with my answer: tehpoker asked: Firstly, let me say how refreshing it is to finally see a block that DOESN’T feature elves and goblins for the umpteenth time. As for my actual question, before inquiring what creature types Magic should have that doesn’t yet (btw, Walrus and Platypus, wholeheartedly), shouldn’t some spotlight be given to the “forgotten” creature types Magic DOES have? Jellyfish, Goat, Pegasus, Turtle, Scorpion, Harpy, Hippo, Whale, Satyr, Starfish, all of these and more are cool types that deserve some love. I am very pro-goat, pro-hippo and pro-turtle. I believe pegasus, scorpions, harpies and satyrs each make perfect sense in the right block.  I acknowledge that jellyfsh have a popular following for purely nostalgic reasons (Man O’ War). Starfish can suck it. :) You got me. I’m a starfish bandwagoner, only hopping on once they got a ground swell of support.  Please don’t think less of me.

Harpies' Future

New 18 Feb 2012 Asked by alienseraphita 3 Comments

Awhile ago I noticed that Harpy is a creature type in Magic but that there are very few of them in the game. Is there any chance they could see more someday?

We haven’t done away with harpies. We just want to make sure to use them in environments where they make sense. I admit they are a little harder to use than the average creature type. Have no fear though, we haven’t abandoned them.
