Keywording Bloomburrow mechanic

New 19 Jul 2024 Asked by hexooze 6 Comments

Has R&D ever considered keywording the Bloomburrow "Season of" cycle type of modal mechanic like Spree? If not, is there an official name or r&d slang for these spells?

We don’t really have a name for that style of mechanic and didn’t try to keyword it to the best of my knowledge.

OTJ Mechanics Appreciation

New 10 Jun 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 17 Comments

Gavin put out a video where he talks with Jeremy Geist about OTJ's mechanics and listening made me realize from a pure mechanical standpoint the mechanics in the set, plot and spree, are just two of my favorite mechanics. Past that outlaws are super flavor and just a really cool batch to build around and mounts are an amazing way at capturing the horse back flavor, something Magic hasn't had until now. Honestly, OTJ has one of the strongest collection of mechanics of any set in a long time.

Thanks. I’m quite proud of them.

Reintroducing New Mechanics Quickly

Mark what’s the likelihood that you being back a new mechanic before feedback for its debut is out?E.g spree or backup showing up before 2-3 years of their debut

It’s happened, but not often.

Appreciation of Mechanics

Just wanted to say hats off on the mechanics of thunder junction! Love outlaw batching and spree / crimes are very interesting!

Happy to hear that.

Praise for the Plot Mechanic

New 21 Apr 2024 Asked by the-pokemon-prof 31 Comments

hey mark, i just wanted to say that Plot is an absolute slam dunk 10/10 A+ mechanic for me, personally, and one i definitely hope to see again in future. setting up huge blow-out turns, synergizing with play-from-exile or cast-multiple-things type effects, it's all so much fun. it seems, from my perspective, like such a versatile little mechanic and i hope it has more in stock. please give out high-fives to everyone involved in plotting such a wicked mechanic!

High fived myself, and will the rest of the vision design team that made it. It is my favorite mechanic of the set (with spree a close second).

Spree Mechanic Praise

New 20 Apr 2024 Asked by roborabbitart 42 Comments

Also I want to say, props to the team for the Spree mechanic! I really hope it makes a return. Even if it's "just kicker again", it's far and away the coolest kicker to date. Cards with options are always fun to use, and Spree offers so many in a very clear way. Being able to use the various modes multiple times as needed is the cherry on top.

The mechanic was known as mission in vision design. The original printed name for it was bonanza, but we changed it to spree specifically to give it a more general name so we could more easily use it in other sets, as we too saw the potential in it.

Expanding Spree

New 16 Apr 2024 Asked by nite0304 50 Comments

Hey Mark! Spree is probably one of my favorite mechanics ever, but I feel it was a bit unexploited. Can we expect to see variations on spree, such as a permanent with spree, a spree cost of a different color than the original spell, a spree cost that's not mana at all, or a spree spell with flashback or kicker?

I am optimistic we will make more spree cards.

Flavor vs Wordiness

New 15 Apr 2024 Asked by perfectcollectorduck 37 Comments

Hey Mark! In your handoff part 2 you note that you found that "spree cards are already wordy and the flavor words weren't worth the space they took up." I must register my intense disagreement. I ADORE the added flavor of things like Forgotten Realms, and I think I would have gotten a lot more into the feel of spree if I'd been able to choose between attacking stealthily and charging in. I'm curious if I'm alone or if others would have also really enjoyed that.

You’re glossing over the “already wordy” part. Flavor words often didn’t fit, and we didn’t want to be inconsistent with them.

Is there a smoothing mechanic in OTJ? Thanks!

Not specifically, but both plot and spree help with using your mana more efficiently.

Sealed Play Enjoyment

New 13 Apr 2024 Asked by cthulhusaurusrex 39 Comments

Hey Mark, just got back from a prerelease (my first prerelease since Dominaria!) and I had a great time. I really enjoyed the spree cards in sealed, I love the way the deserts that deal 1 to target opponent worked as mana fixing off of cards that searched for them (Spinewoods Armadillo especially, that card was super fin) and count for committing a crime, commit a crime itself made for some interesting deck building decisions, and mounts were a nice way to unstick boards full of creatures.I was even sceptical about all the extra cards filling slots (big score, special guests, and breaking news), but I found that it was exciting to see old cards that I think fondly of (I got to see murder, voidslime, etc. and I found that the designs look much better to me in person than it did as spoilers) as well as pull some fun new cards from the big score. Overall I think the set felt great to play with in sealed and I had an awesome time, high fives all around!

High fives shall be applied. I’m happy you had such a good time.

Spree's Origin

New 09 Apr 2024 Asked by fanfactorpodcast 22 Comments

Was an early iteration of spree a modified version of rebound where you do an effect now and at the start of the next turn.

No, It was also a modal spell where you pay for each mode.

New Favorite Mechanics

New 08 Apr 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 21 Comments

After having some time to sit with and think about it, Plot is one of my new favorite mechanics. It is a bit limited in how it can be used, but as you said in your article today it is just so quirky and fun and enables a lot of cool things. Spree is also very high up on my list too. Both are just A+ mechanics.

Happy you’re enjoying them.

Spree Mechanic Rarity

New 06 Apr 2024 Asked by thealtenheinder 43 Comments

Hey Mark, I've read your Nuts and Bolts series and it's been very useful in trying to design my own set. I did notice though that the new Spree mechanic with OTJ isn't present at common, even though I recall there being a thing within design where "if your design doesn't work at common, it doesn't work period". Has design changed their stance on this with the new Play Boosters coming in, or is it something else?

The actual quote is “if your theme’s not at common, it’s not your theme”. The two main themes of Outlaws of Thunder Junction are villainy and the western genre. Those are both plenty present at common. Every mechanic doesn’t need to be. If a mechanic is complex it can be at higher rarities.

Color Identity Clarified

New 04 Apr 2024 Asked by sirpidge 28 Comments

You have said that Spree has a lot of design space. My question is that if a spree cost has more than one colour, does that make the identity of the card multiple colours?

I do not believe it does. It does affect the color identity (although you don’t need to cast it for that to be true).

Villain Set Mechanics

New 01 Apr 2024 Asked by jdrawer01 34 Comments

Mark, I don't understand how OTJ is a villain set outside of showcasing a bunch of them. I thought every set gave you ways to be a villain, commit crimes, and be rewarded for both. Can you say a little more to help me understand better, please?

Many mechanics in the set (commit crime, plot, spree, outlaws, mercenary tokens, etc.) are all themed around acting like a villain. Yes, you can always choose cards to make a villain themed deck, but this set structurally builds around that, much like you can always build a graveyard-themed deck, but not every set is themed around the graveyard.

Understanding 'Plot'

New 01 Apr 2024 Asked by arandomstringofcharacters 42 Comments

"Committing crimes, the outlaw batch, plotting, spree, the mercenary token - all villain themed." TBH, I though that was supposed to be plot as in "story beat", not plot as in "scheme".

No, plot as in to scheme. You’re casting spells now to set up future turns.

Western vs Villain Themes

New 01 Apr 2024 Asked by ceta-maelstrom 44 Comments

So OTJ feels like a very top down western plane to me, and the Villain aspect barely pings in my radar. This isn't a complaint, the western setting is much more interesting to me than the Villain theme. But aside from having a bunch of named characters, most of whomever have no lore to tell us if they are Villains or not, what aspects of the set are you guys seeing as Villainous? Mechanics wise, spree, deserts, outlaws, mercenary tokens, and mounts all feel westerm inspired, where plot is certainly named like its a villain mechanic, but doesn't particularly feel villanous. Leaving crime as the only thing that feels like a Villain mechanic, and even then, most westerns have the heros doing a crime. I think it might a case where the setting and theme weirdly had too much overlap.

Committing crimes, the outlaw batch, plotting, spree, the mercenary token - all villain themed. Only saddle/mount and “desert matters” is western themed (without a tie to villains).

Isocron Scepter Mechanics

New 31 Mar 2024 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 33 Comments

Any concern that Isocron Scepter and similar cards will make some of the Spree cards too repeatable, while the additional cost still have to be paid the cheap mv can allow for some serious shenanigans.

If older mechanics break in larger formats, we’ll fix it with banning. The present can’t be held hostage of the past.

Extending Set Mechanics

New 31 Mar 2024 Asked by rawfishfan420 45 Comments

Hey Mark, as a newer player (Started in New Capenna), and I wanted to express that I don't mind leaving between each set, but what I really crave is the set mechanics lasting longer than one set. Prototype, Unearth, Blitz, Backup, and now seemingly Spree and Crime cards are all mechanics that I crave more of and feel both that I will have to wait years to see them again. What are the chances that we will see mechanics across consecutive standard set releases?

It’s not off the table.

+ Symbol Usage

New 30 Mar 2024 Asked by thewongside-blog 30 Comments

Would the + symbol from spree cards function well as a signal that the card has "as an additional cost, X"? Similar to the tombstone on graveyard-matters cards of old.

Let’s see how spree does.
