Weatherlight Saga Original Vision

New 06 Feb 2024 Asked by ultwarrior 50 Comments

Invoking the hallowed and ancient rite of birthday trivia, I was wondering if there was anything new you could share about your original vision for the end of the Weatherlight Saga? Failing that, is there a villain in Magic's past that you personally would like to see return?

Our original pitch was for a three-year story (with the idea that we’d tell more stories; this was the first story arc). Year one was Rath. It mostly matched with what happen save Crovax going evil and killing Mirri.Year two was Mercadia. A completely different story, and a very different world from what was made.Year three was Dominaria, but in the future. The crew returned to warn Dominaria about the upcoming Phyrexian invasion only to learn the portal they traveled through sent through time and the Phyrexians have already taken over Dominaria. The crew is able to defeat both the Phyrexians (using the hourglass pendant to rewind time) and Volrath who is aboard the ship disguised as Tahngarth.Happy Birthday!

Trivia About Weatherlight Saga

New 04 Jul 2020 Asked by thejingleking 32 Comments

It's my birthday the other day, but I think my question got lost in the shuffle. As usual, could I get some previously unshared trivia about the original weatherlight saga? (For reference, you've shared that Volrath was going to be disguised as Tahngarth and that the hourglass pendant Gerrard gives to Pol Cordel had a giant role in the original third act of the story). Thank you!

In our version Crocax doesn’t betray the crew and kill Mirri. They both play important roles later in the story. Happy Belated Birthday!

Weatherlight Saga Cards

New 07 Aug 2019 Asked by caleb--lost 53 Comments

In your preview article for Volrath you said that there was 4 Weatherlight Saga (not crew) cards in total and the 2 left to discover already had a card. We now have Tahngarth as the third new character. Is the fourth still missing or is it K'rrick? (even if he didn't have a previous card)

It’s not K’rrick. He never had a card before and is less Weatherlight Saga centric than the four cards we’re doing.

Weatherlight Characters Rating

New 17 Jul 2019 Asked by szwanger 57 Comments

Which of the Weatherlight Saga character cards (the original cards up through Apocalypse) were you very happy with?

Squee was the one I liked the most. Sissy was good. Hanna was good. Karn was good. Tahngarth was okay. Orim was okay, Mirri was okay. Crovax was okay. Starke was quirky, but I liked it. Gerrard sucked.

Weatherlight Crew Cards

New 15 Jul 2019 Asked by jchinnjr 41 Comments

If or when: Another card for Tahngarth (in a supplemental set or otherwise)?

I like to hope all the Weatherlight crew will eventually get new cards. That might count more as just a desire on my part though.

Angrath and Tahngarth

New 24 Apr 2019 Asked by natew000 55 Comments

Was Angrath's name derived from Tahngarth? The two names barely differ in spelling; surely this can't be coincidence.

Minotaurs must like that consonant cluster. : )

Weatherlight Story Trivia

It was my bday on Monday, but my ask must have gotten lost so trying again. I’ve been playing since ‘97. Do you have a new trivia about the original Weatherlight crew story you created (not the story we got) that hasn’t been shared yet that you can share? Thanks for all you do and for answering bday trivia!

It’s fuzzy what I have and haven’t shared before. In an earlier draft of the story, Volrath boards the Weatherlight disguised as Tahngarth rather than Takara. Happy Belated Birthday!

Weatherlight Saga Trivia

My 30th birthday is this weekend, and, like I ask for every year, could you give some trivia you've never shared before about the original Weatherlight saga? Thanks!

In an earlier version of the story Volrath boards the Weatherlight disguised not as Takara (Starke’s daughter) but as Tahngarth. Happy Birthday!

Tahngarth's Abilities

New 27 Feb 2018 Asked by battlegaming 26 Comments

Tahngarth, Talruum Hero is a pretty huge break nowadays, right? Vigilance and Fight on a mono red creature is a no go. Clearly he should’ve been mono green.... : )

Red can fight. It just doesn’t get vigilance.

Tahngarth's Fate

New 16 Aug 2017 Asked by cartooncrusader-magic-blog 79 Comments

Is Tahngarth dead? I'd like to see him come back, at least in a supplemental product.

It’s been a long time since the Weatherlight Saga - hundreds of years.

Weatherlight Saga Secrets

Today is my birthday! I'm going to ask for the same thing I asked for last year, can you share something from the original version of the Weatherlight saga that you've never shared before?

In the original story, Volrath disguises himself not as Starke but as Tahngarth.Happy Birthday!

Theros's Legendary Minotaurs

New 09 Feb 2017 Asked by originalskaiil 25 Comments

There are two legendary minotaurs: Tahngarth and Zedruu. Surprisingly, Theros did not introduce a new one.

It didn’t fit on the type line, but Mogis is a Minotaur.

Volrath's Disguise

New 14 Jun 2016 Asked by ilgreven 15 Comments

"(It was Volrath, shapechanged as Tahngarth.)" I thought it was as Takara, Starke's daughter?

That was the published story not the original story.

Murder Mystery Block

New 14 Jun 2016 Asked by szwanger 42 Comments

Have you considered telling a murder mystery story with a Magic block?

The original plans for Nemesis long ago were for it to be a murder mystery figuring out who killed Starke. (It was Volrath, shapechanged as Tahngarth.)

Tahngarth Trivia

Birthday trivia! Could I get something on my favourite member of the Weatherlight crew, Tahngarth?

In the original storyline, shapeshifter Volrath comes aboard the Weatherlight not disguised as Takara (Starke’s daughter) but as Tahngarth. We were asked to change it because the higher ups thought it was a mistake to lose Tahngarth. Happy Birthday!

Jeopardy Mechanic Origin

New 05 Apr 2016 Asked by csick3108-deactivated20201213 25 Comments

What's your opinion on the "Jeopardy mechanic" (i.e., having to phrase your answer in the form of a question)?

It’s on the Unhinged card Question Elemental. That card was originally in Unglued 2 as an enchantment named Jeopardy showing Karn, Squee and Tahngarth playing the game show.

Rare Trivia Sharing

New 19 Aug 2015 Asked by psyllogism 41 Comments

Hi Mark! Today is my 32nd birthday. I've been playing and following Magic for well over half my life now. If you've ever put a piece of trivia in print, I've probably read it. So for my birthday, I'm wondering if you have any rare or never-before-shared trivia, especially about anything in the era between Mirage and 8th Edition :). Thanks!

In the original version of the Weatherlight Saga, Volrath doesn’t come aboard the Weatherlight disguised as Takara (Starke’s daughter) but as Tahngarth. The others liked Tahngarth too much to have him missing for a large swath of the story. Happy Birthday!

Weatherlight Crew Members

New 11 Apr 2015 Asked by nobthehobbit 72 Comments

Who comprised the crew of the Weatherlight (including past crew members like Jhoira)?

Characters who at one time or another were on the Weatherlight crew: Gerrard
Sisay
Tahngarth
Karn
Hanna
Squee
Crovax
Mirri
Orim
Ertai
Starke
Rofellos Jhoira was apparently a former captain but that was something done outside of my work on the story. Teferi also, it seems, was on the crew at one point.

Crovax and Selenia Trivia

New 20 Sep 2014 Asked by pjweisberg 98 Comments

Prerelease day is also my birthday! Can you give me some trivia about Crovax and Selenia? (The characters, not the cards.)

When we were making the Weatherlight crew, we wanted to make sure it included every color. For black we loved idea of the team having a vampire , but it seemed like it would be crazy for them to invite a vampire along. So we came up with a story where Crovax, a nobleman, unleashed an artificial creature from a cursed magical item. And the curse was it made him fall madly in love with the creature. We thought it would be best for that creature to be an angel as they are artificially created. Plus, a vampire in love with an angel sounded cool. Crovax, because he loves Selenia, frees her only to have her return to her previous owner, Volrath (who had given the cursed item to Crovax’s family in the first place). Selenia flees to Rath but it is the bond between the two that allows Crovax to lead the Weatherlight to the nexus that allows them to travel to Rath. This link is also the reason that Volrath is aware of the Weatherlight and sends the predator with Greven il-Vec to stop them. Selenia’s link to Crovax, by the way, is the “whisper of the muse” (which explains the art on the card). When the crew is in Volrath’s stronghold rescuing Sisay, Karn, Tahngarth and Takara, they are attacked on a bridge by Selenia. Crovax, defending Mirri, has no choice but to kill Selenia thus completing the curse turning him into a vampire. As he’s now part of the crew, they have to accept him and voila there’s a vampire on the crew. Note in the original story we created Crovax doesn’t turn evil and doesn’t kill Mirri. And that is probably more than you wanted to know about Crovax and Selenia. Happy Birthday!

Skyship Trivia Gift

New 17 Jul 2014 Asked by superego00 29 Comments

Hey Mark! Today's my birthday, and I was wondering if you could give me some trivia on Skyship Weatherlight. It and Barony Vampire are two of my favorite cards.

Are you aware that there was a rare alternate art version of Skyship Weatherlight which also appeared in booster packs. You can see it on Gatherer. We did it with three cards in Planeshift (Skyship Weatherlight, Tahngarth Talruum Hero and Ertai, the Corrupted). Happy Birthday.
