Returning Dead Characters

Hi Mark: Mirri is one of my favorite Magic characters, so I was delighted to see "Mirri, Weatherlight Duelist" printed, even though she's canonically deceased. Is there any chance of Purraj of Urborg making a similar return?

There is a chance. We do make cards of dead characters.

Weatherlight Saga Original Vision

Invoking the hallowed and ancient rite of birthday trivia, I was wondering if there was anything new you could share about your original vision for the end of the Weatherlight Saga? Failing that, is there a villain in Magic's past that you personally would like to see return?

Our original pitch was for a three-year story (with the idea that we’d tell more stories; this was the first story arc). Year one was Rath. It mostly matched with what happen save Crovax going evil and killing Mirri.Year two was Mercadia. A completely different story, and a very different world from what was made.Year three was Dominaria, but in the future. The crew returned to warn Dominaria about the upcoming Phyrexian invasion only to learn the portal they traveled through sent through time and the Phyrexians have already taken over Dominaria. The crew is able to defeat both the Phyrexians (using the hourglass pendant to rewind time) and Volrath who is aboard the ship disguised as Tahngarth.Happy Birthday!

Animate Graveyard Clarification

if I cast Animate Graveyard and have Mirri, Cat Warrior (from Exodus) in the graveyard, does my graveyard count as a Cat Warrior? Or does the fact that errata has put her types on the type line in later versions mean she no longer "has" that rules text?

Urza's Four Card Counts

Urza has 4 cards: one in disguise as Blind Seer, one that's himself as a creature, one as a planeswalker head in Unstable, and a Vanguard card!

I don’t think we’re counting Vanguard cards as they are oversized cards that can’t go into a deck. Crovax and Mirri hit four if we do.

Predicting Future Character Cards

Omnath and Niv Mizzet are the only characters to have 4 creature cards representing them, more than any other character. In the hypothetical where you don’t know what’s going to come out soon, who do you think is most likely to be the next character to join that club?

Do any other characters have four copies? And who has three? Off the top of my head - Olivia Voldaren, Crovax, Mirri, Rakdos? Who else?

Origins of Mirri's Name

Was it intentional that Mirri was named after a Finnish word for cat, or was it just a happy coincidence?

As one of the people who named Mirri, I think it was happy coincidence, but maybe Michael knew that and I didn’t.

Unrevealed Weatherlight Saga Trivia

My birthday was the other day, and as I ask every year, could I get some previously unrevealed trivia about the original Weatherlight saga? (maybe something about Mercadia?)

In our version of the story, the Weatherlight crashes in Mercadia after shooting through the portal with the Windshaper. The leader of Mercadia (a character that didn’t happen in the printed version) becomes enamored with the ship, which he helps repair. He gets Gerrard and company to give up the ship by depriving medical care to Mirri, who is critically injured, unless they make the desk.The crew ends up invoking an ancient rite of competition to win it back. Trivia About Weatherlight Saga

It's my birthday the other day, but I think my question got lost in the shuffle. As usual, could I get some previously unshared trivia about the original weatherlight saga? (For reference, you've shared that Volrath was going to be disguised as Tahngarth and that the hourglass pendant Gerrard gives to Pol Cordel had a giant role in the original third act of the story). Thank you!

In our version Crocax doesn’t betray the crew and kill Mirri. They both play important roles later in the story. Happy Belated Birthday!

Would you say Mirri's Guile is a break for green to scry, or was that before the color pie?

Green used to have library adjusting/filtering that is no longer in green’s part of the pie.

Creature Type Bias

Is MtG R&D biased against dogs? or creatures in general that aren't cats? I can make a cat tribal out of creatures that, aesthetically speaking, CLEARLY aren't cats (e.g. Kemba, Mirri, BRIMAZ, AJANI, ARAHBO), but mechanically are, because type. In dogs you have hound, dog, and wolf. In snakes you have snake, serpent and naga, and so on. It's really easy for people to go "Oh, I want a cat commander deck" but dog people, or others who want a beloved tribal unification get the short stick

The fact that we use the vernacular of “cat” for jungle cats is the culprit here. Yes, we’ve split up snakes, which I agree in retrospect wasn’t great, and don’t get me started on “hound”.

Regarding 3 legendary creatures of different colors, Mirri had mono green, mono black, and green/white printings. Also Daxos will soon be another that qualifies

Hey Mark! You previously posted you were a big part in Mirri/Crovax's alternate versions in Planar Chaos: can you please tell me more/tell me where to find out more about the ultimate fates of these alternate Mirri/Crovax? I'm desperate to find out whether or not there was a resolution (some say Mirri was killed, some say not, etc...) and hope you can help!

Good Day Mark. Mirri got a new version in Commander 2017, so is it possible we'll get more new versions of the old Weatherlight crew in the future?

It is very much possible. Sissy got a new card in Modern Horizons, for example.

Weatherlight Characters Rating

Which of the Weatherlight Saga character cards (the original cards up through Apocalypse) were you very happy with?

Squee was the one I liked the most. Sissy was good. Hanna was good. Karn was good. Tahngarth was okay. Orim was okay, Mirri was okay. Crovax was okay. Starke was quirky, but I liked it. Gerrard sucked.

Trivia About Mirri

Hey Mark, monday was my Bday; I've been playing Magic for two thirds of my life now; can I ask for some trivia about Mirri, really liked that character.

We designed Mirri because we really wanted Gerard to have a best friend that was female, but not a love interest. Also, we thought having a cat person would be cool. The first thing that happened when the story got wrested away from Michael and I (we created the Weatherlight Saga) was they killed Mirri. In our version of the story, she was injured, but she never died.Happy Birthday!

Legendary Characters' Records

"Anyone know the record for unique legendary creatures of the same character?" - i'm pretty sure there are no characters with more than 3 printings. on ravnica you have rakdos, teysa, and niv who each have 3. technically karona is represented on 6 cards (1 karona, 3 akromas, 1 phage, & 1 jeska) but i consider that a stretch. avacyn is also technically on 4, but 2 of those creatures are flip sides of a single card - so you can't have 4 different avacyn commander decks duke it out. :-(
