Determining Limited Archetypes Numbers

New 26 Jul 2024 Asked by su92 3 Comments

I don't know if this is fit for a regular article, a podcast or a Nuts and Bolts, but I'm very curious to know about how you determine numbers/as-fan for Limited archetypes, especially A+B stuff. Like, why did WOE's WU have many tap triggers while OTJ's GU only had one explicit plot-matters card? Why did the tap triggers were all at uncommon but other themes usually have at least one common trigger? I understand it's a feel and testing thing mostly, but any effort to put it into words would be appreciated. :)

The short version is every theme is different and we endlessly playtest to get a sense of the appropriate as-fan. Maybe I can turn that into a whole column or podcast. Not sure.

Hybrid Card Design Possibilities

New 27 Jun 2024 Asked by painfully-bisexual 10 Comments

Hi Mark! Back again with another question. Regardless of likelihood, do you feel it would ever be possible to design a card that cost {w/u}{b/r} without it being a break? Fiend Artisan, for example, is in pie whether you cast it for BB, BG, or GG. Do you think a card could work in pie that could be cast for WB, WR, UB, or UR?

You just design a card with one ability that’s hybrid w/u and a second ability that’s hybrid b/r. Very doable. The bigger issue is multiple hybrid symbols, especially ones that don’t overlap, confuse a significant amount of players.

Teferi Emblem Mechanics

New 14 May 2024 Asked by pantshkek 15 Comments

You’ve said before that “destroy target permanent” should only be printed on WB and BG cards. Teferi, Hero of Dominaria gives you an emblem with “Whenever you draw a card, exile target permanent an opponent controls.” despite being a WU card. Is this a break, or a bend?

It’s a bend. White can pinpoint destroy any permanent type except land, and by the time you jump through the hoop, it’s late enough in the game that destroying a land is just going to be a very low option.

Rare Slot Color Imbalance

New 10 Apr 2024 Asked by heavenlyevan 32 Comments

Can you talk about the imbalance of colors in the rare slot of OTJ? It looks like there are two main set Grixis rares while Azorius has zero main set rares despite being a two color pair. Was Wizards concerned how this would affect limited?

We decided a while back that some color imbalance at rare and mythic rare is okay as the as-fan is so low in limited.

Origami Mechanic Expansion

New 02 Apr 2024 Asked by peggle2speedrun 66 Comments

As much as I love the new 'Origami' mechanic, limited really gets to feel samey when every-other game ends when somebody folds their whole board into cranes to swing in. I know you cant say much... But with the keyword officially being evergreen moving forward, is there anything in the pipeline to encourage other play patterns?

Crane is just the white/blue archetype.Other options:Blue/black - Fortune TellerBlack/red - HatRed/green - SwanGreen/white - Lotus flowerWhite/black - ButterflyBlue/red - Water balloonBlack/green - Masu boxRed/white - HeartGreen/blue - Jumping frog

Mana Cost Ordering

New 19 Mar 2024 Asked by aork14 52 Comments

"Hi Mark, in mana costs, for mixing hybrid mana and non hybrid (and mixing different hybrid mana symbols too like Leyline of the Guildpact) is there an official order that you guys go by?"ft
As far as I can tell, it just follows the normal mana color order, with the hybrid mana symbols placed in-between their respective colors to "connect" them, like in compleated Tamiyo the phyrexian hybrid mana was in-between its two colors. So like, as an example, if there were a hypothetical bant card with one of each color and then a hybrid White/Blue and a hybrid Green/White, it would be templated as G g/w W w/b B

That sounds correct.

MKM and New Capenna

New 16 Mar 2024 Asked by radjanspiritmonger 62 Comments

From a design perspective, I think the pulpy-noir take of MKM would have aesthetically meshed better with New Capenna and its art deco style. I also think it would make sense to have a bunch of private detectives suddenly appear, as on Ravnica the Azorius and Boros seem to have law under control, but on Capenna people might need to hire someone independent of “the system” now that some of the crime families have been hit hard. From a player perspective, Ravnica is engrained in people’s heads and you don’t have that issue on Capenna where we’ve only had one set.

A lot of these notes seem to imply, why didn’t you think of New Capenna? We did. We explored New Capenna. It didn’t fit. It didn’t have components we needed. It didn’t have enough known characters. It required explanation that we didn’t have space to explain. And on top of all that, New Capenna, as a setting, just wasn’t all that popular with the players.

Bloomburrow Animal Guessing

New 24 Feb 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 89 Comments

Can I guess the animals for each color in Bloomburrow? WU: Birds, UB: Bats, BR: Lizards, RG: Raccoons, GW: Rabbits, WB: Badgers, UR: Otters, BG: Squirrels, RW: Mice, and GU: Frogs

Everyone is free to guess. Here’s what I said in today’s panel. 1) There are ten two-color pairs.2) Every one is a different animal. 3) Red/white is Mice.4) We’ve seeded some cards in previous sets.5) I said that Rabbits and Frogs were two of the animals.I won’t tell you if you’re correct, but I enjoy seeing guesses.

Hybrid Mana Philosophy

New 14 Feb 2024 Asked by su92 25 Comments

I don't know if it was Vision Design or Set Design that set the common gold disguise costs as HH, but doesn't that go against the current philosophy of not wanting double costs in low mana values? I specifically mean that you can play, for example, disguise {W/U}{W/U} in white-black (no blue), but there's a lot of variance of how comfortably you can flip it depending on what lands you drew and what other costs you want to pay that turn, which I thought Wizards wanted to avoid.

Hybrid works differently than monocolor symbols because they work in three different decks efficiently, each of the two monocolor decks and the combined two colors.

Hybrid Mana Order

New 10 Feb 2024 Asked by nite0304 38 Comments

Hey Mark, question about the hybrid mana symbols. What is the criteria for some colors to sometimes be above others? For example, White is above Black in the Orzhov hybrid mana, so its not alphabetical order, but its below red in the Boros hybrid mana, so its not WUBRG order either.White and Blue are above three mana colors, Black and Red are above 2, and Green is below them all. So what's the criteria?

The hybrid symbols follow how we write mana symbols in mana costs. Each color starts two and ends two: WUUBBRRGGWWBURBGRWGU

Scry vs Surveil Distribution

New 20 Jan 2024 Asked by dude1818 34 Comments

The new WU hybrid card that has surveil makes me wonder: do colors get the same access to scry and surveil, or does the graveyard interaction mean you distribute the two differently?

White isn’t supposed to get higher surveil numbers. This card had a lot of discussion.

White/Blue Philosophy Appreciation

New 16 Jan 2024 Asked by bigbantbeast 23 Comments

Hi, Mark! I hope you are well. Today's my 27th birthday and marks 10 years that I've engaged with Magic. Whoo-hoo! Magic has been an important part of my life since I started. From the gameplay to the lore to the Color Pie (especially the color pie). My Birthday Trivia ask to you is: What's something you appreciate about White/Blue philosophy? It's the pairing I most identify with personality wise. Thanks for all that you do to make Magic awesome! Here's to another 10 years! : )

White/blue is both the most orderly and the best at knowing how to work the system to get what it needs. Happy Birthday!

Tomik Watermark Error

New 19 Dec 2023 Asked by rtrt227 35 Comments

Hey, I know this won’t matter to most, but it matters to me; why does Tomik, the acting Guildmaster of the Orzhov, have an Azorius watermark in Ravnica Remastered? Did something major happen?

It’s a mistake.

Hi Mark! This may have already passed on to you or someone else but I thought I'd mention it- the reprint of Tomik, Distinguished Advokist in Ravnica Remastered shows up in the card image gallery with an Azorius Watermark. In my admittedly hazy recollection he's a member of the Orzhov instead- is this a mistake or have I just got myself mixed up?

It’s a mistake.

Augury Adept Reevaluation

New 19 Nov 2023 Asked by pootdspencer 26 Comments

A few years ago back in June of 2019, you told us that Augury Adept was a color break for white at the time, and that the card has a gold white/blue effect rather than a hybrid white/blue effect. Is Augury Adept still a color pie break through the lens of the modern white color pie? Over the last few years, white's color pie has been expanded to have limited draw effects of "do a thing, get a card, but only once per turn" like Dusk Legion Dualist and Bennie Bracks. it feels like a combat damage trigger might be within that realm now. Is that the case or is it still a break?(Side note, I like the way you all tackled the white card draw issue in a way that feels super white. Well done.)

We’ve revamped white’s ability to draw a lot since 2019.
