Complexities of Mechanical Design

New 28 Jul 2024 Asked by bloodyqueerfrenchman 2 Comments

'New cards or mechanics. Basically, new Magic mechanical design. Have fun doing it (Magic design is fun), but I can’t see it.' I wouldn't dare try it. It's just clarification for future requests like a Mardu-partner-with vampire pairing or a card called 'Mock Exam' for the upcoming Strixhaven set.

That stuff is fine.

Hello. ^_^Was giving any of the Bloomburrow Bats the Vampire type ever considered?

No.

Maths on Imbalanced Factions

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by purplerakath 1 Comments

Does the math on imbalanced factions change if it's just five two color factions with two of them being the same typal/theme. Something like Izzet Weirds, Simic Elementals, Golgari Squrrels, and Mardu (Boros and Orzhov) Vampires?

Five two-color factions isn’t “imbalanced”.

Red/White Vampire Feasibility

If or when: Vampire typal as a red/white archtype.

If. Vampires are so core black, it’s hard to imagine a color combination without black.

Bloomburrow Thematic Construction

New 15 Jul 2024 Asked by shitstormwastaken 0 Comments

You've said you've been seeding the Bloomburrow creature types for a few sets now. Was the decision to make Aclazotz a Bat God, and thus introduce bats and bat themes to the white/black Ixalan vampires, at all influenced by the Bloomburrow bats? There are a lot of pretty obvious similarities (colors, animal type, religion) between the two archetypes across the sets.

If you see any relevant animals in the last Magic “year”, we were very aware of their Bloomburrow needs when we added them to files.

Bats in Bloomburrow Lore

New 14 Jul 2024 Asked by weevil-mastermind 20 Comments

I’d like to say thank you for not making the bats in Bloomburrow vampires. Or at least not making vampirism their main thing in the lore. Vampire bats are cool but overdone considering only 3 out of over 1,400 bat species drink blood (and those 3 species of vampire bay are only found in Central America and South America.)

In Bloomburrow, the Bats are the clergy.

Appreciating Bats in Archetype

Can you give a high five to whoever suggested bats for the black white archetype. Vampire bats being altruistic really leans into whites philosophy

Will do.

Praise for Simple Designs

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by patjamma 10 Comments

I am LOVING the simpler designs in Bloomburrow. My favorite card of all time is Vampire Nighthawk so seeing a bunch of creatures with 2-4 evergreen keywords and nothing else makes me happy

Glad to hear that.

Sorin's Creation Trivia

New 02 Jul 2024 Asked by sayntcigol 5 Comments

Yesterday was my birthday... but every time I've tried my birthday trivia requests seem to get lost... I would like to request trivia about Sorin please.

Sorin came about because we were making original Innistrad, and we thought it would be cool to have a Vampire planeswalker, but it required a lot of work from the creative team to explain how exactly a vampire could be a planeswalker. It involved defining what vampires are like on Innistrad.Happy Birthday!

Future for Creature Groupings

New 12 Jun 2024 Asked by polarisfluff 15 Comments

Are we going to see more mechanics for groupings of creature types like outlaws in the future? Like maybe fighters (Knights, soldiers, warriors, archers) or critters (rabbits, squirrels, rats, mice, etc) or undead (zombies skeletons vampires spirits)? Where does it sit on the storm scale?

There will be more batching. We do want to be careful how often and how intuitive the groupings are.

Insights on Baron Sengir

New 10 Jun 2024 Asked by mr-w-rambles 36 Comments

I am evoking the rite of birthday trivia and asking about Baron Sengir, the head vampire in charge

A lot of Homelands design was based on creative components that were popular in Alpha. The whole Sengir clan owes its existence to how popular Senior Vampire was in the early days of the game. Happy Birthday!

White's Card Draw Mechanics

New 10 Jun 2024 Asked by shadowman2099 41 Comments

I gotta say, I am not a fan of the "once per turn" draw in White. It just doesn't have the same mechanical bite that other colors have like Red's impulse draw/rummaging or Black's sacrifice for power. Can we see more of a push in forms of White card draw that thematically fit, like charity (Secret Rendez-Vous), compensation (Discerning Financier), and retribution (Esper Sentinel) with less ETB card draw and "draw a card because you did something" (Wedding Announcement, Welcoming Vampire)?

The flavor is white draws long, that is it sets up the proper condition and then gets rewarded with card draw over time. It’s slow, methodical card draw.

Innistrad Monsters Batching Probability

New 01 Jun 2024 Asked by lazcarno 16 Comments

"if/when: batching for "undead" creatures (zombies, skeletons, vampires, ghouls etc.)?" "If, but I could see it working in the right set." What are the chances that the next Innistrad set has vampires, zombies and werewolves batched as "monsters" or a similar term? (See for example Victim of Night.)

The batch doesn’t want to be too high a percentage of the set.

Undead Creatures Batching Potential

Innistrad Missing Creature Type

New 28 May 2024 Asked by 3-slugcat-pilots-7-ornithopters 42 Comments

Hey MaRo! I recently watched a really interesting video about Innistrad recently. The thesis is that there is a subtle “missing” creature type of UG wizards that were cut for some reason, probably for thematic reasons within Innistrad.I was wondering if you could give any insight if that was the case? Here’s the video, it’s 13 minutes long but it’s very solid and it convinced me soundly as a viewer.https://youtu.be/12X5wgYikqk?si=WW2i_Hr4cZrDHZ_SI also love the idea that the wizards were explorer/pirate wizards in the Hinterland harbor a lot

I haven’t watched the video, but as the guy who led the design, I know that the only five creature types we cared about were the four monster creature types (Spirits, Vampires, Werewolves, and Zombies) and Humans. No other typal themes were ever part of the design.

Crowdsourced Card Design

New 17 May 2024 Asked by karric 35 Comments

Would You Make the Card be any easier if instead of every card stat being voted on, it was just the general idea of the card? Like "legendary Vampire + cares about X + modern format" and then your team fleshes it out? Maybe you could do several cards at the same time with this approach?

There are definitely ways to make it easier to do, but I don’t want to do it in a way that takes away agency from the players. I don’t want We Make the Card (While You Watch).

Creature Traits

New 11 May 2024 Asked by zopandrel 23 Comments

with various type of creature having common things, like goblin being red, spider having reach and other similar aspect either on the design or the flavor side, what would be the common ground ( if there's one ) for giant and vampire ?

Giants tend to be bigger, 3/3 and up. Vampires often have flying and/or lifelink, but we make too many for them all to have it.

Crovax Story Arc

New 13 Apr 2024 Asked by wherehavealltheuswrnamesgone 36 Comments

What was your plan for Crovax in the original Weatherlight story?

He became part of the crew. We wanted all five Magic colors, and colorless/artifacts, represented, but feel they wouldn’t let a Vampire join them. So, we wanted Crovax to prove himself before being turned into a Vampire, so there was a reason for him to stay.

Vampires vs Zombies

New 08 Apr 2024 Asked by 3-slugcat-pilots-7-ornithopters 43 Comments

I never realized that vampires were the race for black, zombies feel much more common and black to me personally- vampires feel very marry because of ixalan and orzhov vampires

Vampires *and* Zombies are the characteristic races of black.
