Absence of 5-Color Mechanics

New 29 May 2024 Asked by trifas 28 Comments

Domain, Sunburst and Converge were all absent in MH3. Is it because the colorless theme of the set made difficult to make 5-color mechanics work well?

I assume that was a big part of it.

Fifth Dawn Trivia

New 23 Apr 2023 Asked by escapingburger 42 Comments

Hi Mark, it's my birthday this week! I'm wondering if you have any trivia about Fifth Dawn or the Sunburst mechanic. It was one of the last sets I played before drifting away from Magic for many years, but I still have fond memories of trying to make a five-color Sunburst deck work back then. Thanks!

Sunburst was the brainchild of Aaron Forsythe. He was on the Fifth Dawn team as a reporter to be able to write about the experience. He was so good, we hired him into R&D. He also designed scry in the same team. Happy Birthday!

Sunburst Mechanic Return

Any chance we will see Sunburst as a set mechanic again?

There’s a chance.

Art's Thermal Representation

New 12 Oct 2022 Asked by gaimanotaku 29 Comments

Does a picture of a hot thing in art (like the Boros sunburst logo or a Red mana symbol) count? Or just an actual sun or actual flame?

An actual hot thing. A picture of a hot thing isn’t hot.

Sunburst Mechanic Doubts

New 13 Jul 2022 Asked by greg502 27 Comments

Will we ever see a land that produces mana that counts as 2 (or more) colors for Sunburst and the like (e.g. Adds a single W that counts as both W and R mana for Prismatic Ending)

I’m not sure the confusion is worth the design space. The former is big and the latter is small.

Reprinting With New Names

New 20 Oct 2018 Asked by ryuaqua92 27 Comments

Is it possible that a preexisting old card could be reprinted with a new name for the same mechanic? (e.g. reprinting Engineered Explosives with Converge instead of Sunburst, or reprinting Primalcrux saying "devotion to green" instead of Chroma)

If we revamped the mechanic as a larger thing like devotion and chroma.

Undergrowth Mechanic's Novelty

New 02 Sep 2018 Asked by gophilipbowles 51 Comments

I feel undergrowth is a bit different from mechanics taken from individual cards and turned into a word (such as landfall, sunburst or kicker) because it's been widely-used and in particular is a big part of how green uses the graveyard. Innistrad alone had at least four 'undergrowth' cards: Spider Spawning, Gnaw to the Bone, Boneyard Wurm and Grim Flowering, as many cards as some named mechanics. It's been used with multiple other effects. In no sense is it a new or poorly-explored mechanic.

Being a focused mechanical theme is a different animal than having a few individual cards. The game is celebrating its 25th anniversary and we’ve printed over 18,000 unique cards. Finding mechanics that we’ve never done before on any cards should be seen as a cool thing that occasionally happens rather than something to be constantly expected.

Gold Mana with Manalith

New 21 Jan 2018 Asked by birdofablackfeather 29 Comments

ultradinosaurdude asked: In a game of Un-format, can I use Manalith to add one Gold mana to my color pool (because of Sword of D&D's token)?Sure. For all intents and purposes, it’s colorless (except you can’t use it to pay specifically colorless costs). It would work with Sunburst though, wouldn't it?

Yes.

Crystalline Crawler Mechanics

Why was Crystalline Crawler given Converge over Sunburst?

It was set on Zendikar.

Converge Vs. Sunburst

New 30 Oct 2016 Asked by berzerkdragon 37 Comments

Why does Crystalline Crawler have Converge instead of Sunburst? Is Converge considered a "fixed" Sunburst or something?

The card is flavored as being from Zendikar. Sunburst was original Mirrodin.

Mix Match Card Possibility

New 04 Oct 2016 Asked by elmdormesdoram 29 Comments

I've read your answer about Arcbound Wanderer, and I thought: are we ever getting a card with graft-sunburst? Or fabricate-sunburst?

The best chance for Mix & Match cards would be a supplemental product.

Fifth Dawn Card Trivia

New 04 Oct 2016 Asked by jayzon84 26 Comments

Hi Maro! It's my 32nd birthday today (10/3) and I'd like to ask if you had any trivia on the 32nd expansion of Magic, Fifth Dawn, and specifically the card #103, Arcbound Wanderer. Keep up the good work! :)

We don’t often get a chance to make cards with two block keywords. Sunburst was one of the new mechanics in Fifth Dawn and I realized it had great synergy with Modular so I made one card.Happy Birthday!

Corrupted Crossroads Design

New 06 Jan 2016 Asked by songofviceandire 16 Comments

Why doesn't Corrupted Crossroads only make colored mana for colorless spells, rather than Devoid spells? The effect would be the same except for cute things like Sunburst, but it would be more backwards compatible and less parasitic, and read more elegantly. Any specific reason it didn't work?

Spelling it out makes it clearer and causes less confusion.

Mechanical Differences

One subtle difference: corrupted crossroads can't help sunburst.

Good point.

Converge vs Sunburst

New 03 Dec 2015 Asked by johnny-spaghetti 27 Comments

Why did you create Converge rather than simply reprint Sunburst?

Because they don’t work exactly the same.

Mana Color Rules Evolution

New 13 Oct 2015 Asked by penguinpaladin 15 Comments

Un-rules question: In 2012 in response to a question about generating purple/yellow mana for Sunburst, you said "The rules make you choose one of the available five colors. Silver-bordered world, on the other hand, isn’t so restrictive." Why has that changed?

I realized that there was a difference between the colors of permanents and the color of mana. It never comes up in black border so it took me longer to realize.

Avatar of Me Mechanics

New 11 Oct 2015 Asked by justonemorerpblog-deactivated20 15 Comments

Un-rules question: Do different colored Avatar of Me's need to be on the field for you to generate the color that they are, for effects such as converge and sunburst? Or are the colors allowable as long as you're playing by un-rules? Or maybe even that the colors are allowable if someone has that eye color?

Just because permanents exist of a color doesn’t mean mana can be generated of that color. Currently, even in silver-bordered world, you can only produce mana of five colors (White, Blue, Black, Red & Green). Remember that colorless is not a color.

Sunburst Mechanic Exclusion

New 08 Oct 2015 Asked by nick-dowdle-jeskai-judicator-de 28 Comments

Why didn't sunburst make it to Battle for Zendikar?

Because we didn’t need a mechanic that put counters on artifacts. : )

Old Mechanics, New Names

New 01 Oct 2015 Asked by royinversezx 27 Comments

Do you plan to bring back old mechanics by just giving them new names like you did with converge/sunburst?

The two mechanics are similar but not the same. Sunburst only went on permanents and always added counters.

Converge vs Sunburst

New 15 Sep 2015 Asked by bachtigh 17 Comments

So is Converge a fixed Sunburst the same way Devotion was a fixed Chroma?

It is related but different.
