If/when: a new/updated untap symbol?

If. The untap symbol didn’t go over well in Shadowmoor.

Lorwyn and Shadowmoor Preferences

Perhaps a question for the readers: when people ask you for a return to Lorwyn, do they typically mean Lorwyn, Shadowmoor, or both?

Best Shadowmoor Draft Format

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by szwanger 1 Comments

Which do you consider the best draft format from this group: all Shadowmoor, Shadowmoor/Eventide (Shadowmoor first), Shadowmoor/Eventide (Eventide first), or all Eventide?

All Shadowmoor. It’s one of my all-time favorite draft environments.

Ravnica vs Bloomburrow

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by jambrose 6 Comments

Can I please request that we replace Ravnica with Bloomburrow as the go to two-color plane. I don't think I've been this excited for a magic set since the end of the weatherlight saga? Maybe Shadowmoor/Eventide?

I know its fleeting and we have a lot I'm going to dislike next year so I'm going to enjoy the heck out of this set. But PLEASE consider making this a soon return.

Success breeds repetition.

That’s an interesting question. : )

Hybrid Use in Future Sets

New 03 Jun 2024 Asked by davidemsa 32 Comments

Does the way hybrid works in Commander makes you unlikely to do another set heavy on hybrid cards? (But probably not as heavy as Shadowmoor.) I ask a fan of hybrid, hoping that's still possible.

We’re going to use hybrid how we need to use it. Commander will use it how it wants to use it.

Aura vs Enchantment

New 23 May 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 7 Comments

Why is Shadow of the Second Sun an aura and not just a normal enchantment?

Because you can choose which player this effects which makes enchant player more relevant.

Considering Two Set Blocks

New 23 May 2024 Asked by roborabbitart 0 Comments

So I understand that three set blocks tend to wear people out, but has there been any consideration for two set blocks? I've been feeling more and more over the years that a lot of recent mechanics just don't get enough support because they're often one-and-done, and it'll be a miracle to ever see them again. It also feels like recent settings don't get fleshed out and don't get time to breathe, save Eldraine which got revisited surprisingly quickly.

Battle for Zendikar, Shadows over Innistrad, Kaladesh, Amonkhet, and Ixalan were all two set blocks.

Sphinx Card Wording

New 22 May 2024 Asked by tkilian 3 Comments

Why are Sphinx and Shadow of the Second Sun worded like that? (“At the beginning of [player’s] postcombat main phase, there is an additional beginning phase after this phase”)It’s not the most clear way what you’d phrase this effect in natural language if you were trying to explain it to someone, so I imagine it’s something to do with the rules.

Usually odd terminology comes from templating issues.

Eldrazi and Phyrexians

New 18 May 2024 Asked by tylerja-blog 31 Comments

If R&D strives for mechanical uniqueness in the Eldrazi and Phyrexians, why then do we see such creative homogenization between the two in MH3? The Eldrazi were never borg-like assimilators, thay was very evidently the Phyrexians. Now we have (had?) two antagonists whos primary threat is assimilation. Besides Eldrazi being unintelligible, whats even the difference anymore?

The Eldrazi don’t assimilate. Emarakul can mutate things, as seen in Shadows over Innistrad, block.

Corrupted Cards Opinion

New 18 May 2024 Asked by su92 48 Comments

I understand that MH3 wants to reference famous cards (and that's great!) but I'm getting a bit tired of the "Old card/character but corrupted" trope (referring to the Eldrazi versions). Maybe it's because we just had DMU, ONE *and* MOM do it just last year, or maybe I've played Magic for too long and I still remember SOM and SOI blocks doing that as well. What's the general opinion on this kind of cards?

They’re very popular.

Rhys the Redeemed Trivia

New 07 May 2024 Asked by barracius 29 Comments

Hi Mark! It's my birthday! I hereby invoke the sacred rite of Blogatog Birthday Trivia! What is some awesome and preferably previously untold trivia about Rhys the Redeemed? (I think one story you told was about how the card came from experiments of "how do we make a 1 mana legendary creature," so I guess something beyond that)

The Lorwyn/Shadowmoor block was a bout a world that completely changes, so most legendary creatures in Shadowmoor (and Eventide) were new versions of characters you’d already seen on a card in Lorwyn (and Morningtide). The Elves were black and green on Lorwyn and green and white on Shadowmoor. We wanted both Rhys cards to play in the same deck, so we made both castable in a monogreen deck, but then game them elements that showed their second color. As Shadowmoor’s main theme was hybrid, that was the tool we used for Rhys the Redeemed.Rhys the Redeemed’s first ability was aimed towards an Elf deck, something we expected in limited and constructed. The second ability was grander in scale and encouraged a different style of deck, although one that would still work in just the Elf deck.Happy Birthday!

Unblockable Mechanics

New 31 Mar 2024 Asked by escapingburger 46 Comments

Hello! When you have a "can't be blocked except by creatures with haste" effect as on Resilient Roadrunner, do you balance it as if it made the creature unblockable altogether? Or does it get discounted somewhat since haste is more common than, say, shadow or horsemanship?P.S.: Please distribute high fives for whoever's responsible for Prairie Dog (maybe it's you). I sent an ask maybe a year ago about expanding Magic's squirrel family, so I'm pretty pleased by this one.

It’s treated similar to can’t be blocked.High fives shall be delivered (not to me though).

Bloomburrow vs Lorwyn

New 23 Mar 2024 Asked by beechdallama 41 Comments

Not fully educated about bloomburrow but under the impression it's just/similar to lorwyn/shadowmoor, so I must ask, are noggles coming back?

They’re pretty different. Bloomburrow is full of anthropomorphic animals. Lorwyn/Shadowmoor is not that.

Personal UB Selections

New 01 Mar 2024 Asked by brendo 28 Comments

With people saying what universes beyond stuff they want today, figured I'd throw in mine. The legend of zelda would be really cool, but I've also spent loads of time building a commander cube for it, and it would hurt to have cards come out for the characters that don't line up with what I have planned for them. Maybe just smash bros haha. The walking dead could definitely do with some more characters getting represented.Lost could be a really interesting one if executed correctly.Shadow of the colossus could be really cool, but probably small. Transistor. Awesome game. There's probably more, but this is just what I can think of at the moment.

Thanks.

Hybrid Mechanics Appreciation

New 29 Feb 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 38 Comments

I just want to say hybrid might be one of my favorite mechanics in the game. I started playing in 2010 so I had just missed Shadowmoor block, but looking back through it as I was getting into the game the set just really resonated with me. I know we'll never get that much hybrid in a set, but do you think it can have a larger presence than what it typically does? To use a metaphor, it is often the candles on a birthday cake and I'd want it to be the icing.

I just did a two-part article on the history of hybrid. Our usage has been climbing over the years.

Pack Art Changes

New 16 Jan 2024 Asked by zblasterlosthispassword 27 Comments

Hey Mark, kinda odd question. Why did WotC stop making packs in boxes have multiple arts on them? I remember a fun part of drafting and buying packs being the mysticism of grabbing all of the Jace Packs or Avacyn packs in SOI because of superstition and luck. I'm sad that packs have all had identical art for a while now.

When we started making more variants of boosters, we cut to one image each to lessen confusion.
