Reanimate

Reanimation Design

New 26 Mar 2024 Asked by honor-basquiat 19 Comments

Hi Mark, May I request more reanimation creature effects that let you reanimate from any graveyard instead of just your graveyard? Or could you explain why Magic doesn't make these types of effects as much as they used to. I'm talking about effects that have a mana value of 5 or higher BTW.

We want to be careful not to make too many cards that dissuade players from playing larger creatures.

Mechanics and Intended Features

New 16 Nov 2023 Asked by blaze-1013 57 Comments

Changing exert to stun counters would be a large change since it stops working with untap effects and being able to use those, such as Vizier of Tumbling Sands, is an intended feature of the mechanic. Same is true of persist/undying using finality. It is a feature, not a bug, that you can sac a persist/undying creature twice, reanimate it, then do it twice more. Also, changing old effects to use scry or surveil was largely a buff and these changes would be nerfs which generally upsets players.

Fine points.

Artifact Reanimation Bend

New 02 Jun 2023 Asked by ebonstone 31 Comments

"Are creatures the only thing black can "reanimate" directly back to the battlefield? In pie, yes." Is Beacon of Unrest reanimating artifacts a big bend or a break?

The artifact part was a bend at the time, and is now something we’re opting not to do (at least two years in your future).

Black's Bend

Can't Black also reanimate Planeswalkers in pie? There are a few cards in black that do it.

It’s a bend.

In pie, yes.

Augment Cards Reanimation

New 15 Nov 2022 Asked by abzanhero 22 Comments

Hey mark! Hope you're well. A friend of mine is building a Surgeon --General-- Commander commander deck, and is wondering what happens if you reanimate a card with Augment, with Living Death or some other effect. Does it enter and then vanish because it's not on a host?

Yes, it acts a lot like an aura.

White's Unique Abilities

New 12 Apr 2022 Asked by boypicassofunnglassesgameneohack 103 Comments

Curious what you perceive to be white's unique abilities/identity? I'm just curious what white's strengths are that aren't as good (if not better) in green.

Effects primary in white: (green isn’t strong in current color pie in things that are bolded)
  • +1/+1 counter (creation and caring)
  • Animating Enchantments (Target/all non-aura enchantment(s) you control becomes an enchantment creature.)
  • Banisher Priest-like effects (When this card enters the battlefield, exile target creature/permanent until this card leaves play.)
  • Bring back creatures/permanents that went to the graveyard this turn
  • Can’t be attacked. (Creatures can’t attack you.)
  • Can’t lose the game and opponents can’t win.
  • Destroy target attacking or blocking creature.
  • Destroy target creature. Its controller gets compensation.
  • Destroy target creature that damaged you or a creature you control this turn.
  • Destroy target tapped creature.
  • Destroy target creature with power ¾ or greater.
  • Destroy all creatures.
  • Destroy all creatures with power ¾ or greater.
  • +N/+N (on Auras)
  • -N/+N (on spells)
  • -N/+N (on Auras)
  • +0/+N (on creatures)
  • +0/+N (on spells)
  • +0/+N (on Auras)
  • +N/+N to your team, one-shot
  • +N/+N to your team, ongoing
  • Damage prevention (Prevent the next N damage that would be dealt to target creature/player.)
  • Damage redirection (Prevent the next N damage that would be dealt to target creature/player this turn. If damage is prevented in this way, this card deals that much damage to target creature/player.)
  • Defender
  • Deal N damage to target attacking or blocking creature.
  • Double strike
  • Enchantment destruction
  • “Enchantress” ability (Whenever you play an enchantment, draw a card.)
  • Exiling cards from graveyard
  • First strike
  • “Flicker” (Exile target creature/permanent, then return it to the battlefield under its owner’s control—occasionally the creature/permanent returns at the end of the turn.)
  • Flying
  • Friendly to artifacts
  • Friendly to enchantments
  • Friendly to legendary permanents
  • Friendly to low mana value cards
  • Friendly to planeswalkers
  • “Gaseous Form” (This creature neither deals nor receives damage.)
  • Indestructible
  • Life gain
  • Lifelink
  • “Meddling” (Name a spell. That spell can’t be played as long as this card is on the battlefield.)
  • Pacifism-like effect (Enchanted creature cannot attack or block.)
  • Preventing actions (Your opponents can’t cast spells this turn.)
  • Protection
  • Putting enchantments from hand onto the battlefield
  • Putting planeswalkers from hand onto the battlefield
  • “Reanimate” permanent (Return a permanent card from a graveyard to the battlefield.)
  • “Reanimation” (Return a creature card from a graveyard to the battlefield.)
  • Return target artifact from graveyard to hand.
  • Return target enchantment from graveyard to hand.
  • Rules setting
  • Tapping creatures
  • Taxing
  • Token generation
  • “Tutor” for an enchantment. (Search your library for an enchantment card and put that card in your hand.)
  • “Tutor” for a planeswalker. (Search your library for a planeswalker card and put that card in your hand.)
  • Vigilance
  • Ward (for mana)
  • “Warlord” (This creature’s power and toughness are equal to the number of creatures you control.)

Monocolor Effects Combination

New 24 Dec 2021 Asked by ironchefravnica 58 Comments

The Entomb/Reanimate with Entwine thing got me thinking, why would the Entwine cost need to be green? I'd have thought it was ok as a mono black card. The catch with black being that the card you tutor for does go to the graveyard first, so the Reanimate half still gets blocked by static graveyard hate. Grafdigger's Cage/Rest In Peace/Leyline of the Void and so on.

We need to be careful doing two monocolor effects on the same card where the combination isn’t in color.

Impact of 4 Mana Reanimation

New 25 Nov 2021 Asked by shylax 30 Comments

I don't think most people are pushing for the return of Reanimate, but what was wrong with 4 mana reanimation? I don't remember Breath of Life or Zombify upsetting the apple cart too much in Standard. Even something like Late to Dinner seems fine for Standard.

We had a period where reanimation was mana value of four. It caused problems and limited our design of bigger creatures.

Alternatives for Black Reanimation

New 25 Nov 2021 Asked by dungeonmasterryan 29 Comments

On the black can reanimate question: it's usually regulated to 5+ mana. Which means it's too expensive to see competitive play in standard or historic. Can black have a cheaper reanimation spell? Give it a good downside

We get one of two things: cheap reanimation or expensive, large, powerful creatures. We’ve chosen the latter.

Reanimation Spells in Historic

New 25 Nov 2021 Asked by todayfromtourach 44 Comments

Why are all the reanimation spells in historic white? When has white ever been able to bring spells and cretures back from the dead why isnt black able to reanimate anymore why is black always getting the short end of the stick please let black have good cards

First, White is secondary in reanimating creatures, so it’s supposed to have cards that do it. Second, we make more black reanimation cards, they tend to be more open-ended than white, and usually less expensive.

Bending the Color Wheel

New 19 Nov 2021 Asked by dionysusfursona 67 Comments

As to what colors get what abilities...would prohibitively high costs help bend the color wheel, (like, since it isn't doing what that color normally does,, it takes more mana to do it) for example:UUUU, destroy target non blue creatureWWWWWWWW (that's 8 Ws), take an extra turnGGGGGGG, destroy all creaturesRRRRRR, reanimate target creature in a graveBBBB, counter target spellOr would that just still be breaking the color wheel?

That’s still breaking the color pie. Not being able to do something means not being able to do it.

Reanimate Ability Detail

New 08 Oct 2021 Asked by hitek1208 28 Comments

As a followup to the white reanimate everything, bringing back all players yards to there field is more blacks domain right? Or could white do it in the right flavor?

Black is better at reanimate all creatures, but black can’t reanimate noncreature artifacts or enchantments.

Power and Toughness Differences

New 15 May 2020 Asked by hebiweiss 35 Comments

Concerning "*/*" vs "0/0, +1/+1 for each". If I remember right, creature with */* has power and toughness equal the determined value in any zone and the other ones are 0/0 in everywhere other than the battlefield, so cards like Alesha couldn't reanimate */* if the * is currently greater than 2, but she can get a 0/0 that gains +1/+1 for each of anything.

Balancing Animate Dead

New 28 Jan 2020 Asked by goku332 43 Comments

Why doesn't WoTC print any more Animate Dead effects? Seems to be the most balanced reanimate spell.

Most balanced? I think you’re using that word to mean a different definition than I use. : )

Reanimation Methods

New 23 Jan 2020 Asked by goku332 38 Comments

Why did you stop making Animate Dead and Dance of the Dead effects? That seems the fairest way to reanimate to me. Especially Dance. Were it doesn't untap and I have to pay mana to untap it. And each color can deal with said creature.

Auras have proven problematic as a means of reanimating. They’re wordy and have rules issues.

White Reanimation Trait

New 05 Jan 2020 Asked by dalenthas 56 Comments

Is Sun Titan still in White's part of the color pie? If so, may I request more cards like it that can repeatedly reanimate small things? That seems like a good source of card advantage for white that isn't just drawing cards.

It is something white can do.

Underworld Breach Question

New 31 Dec 2019 Asked by chewylsb 34 Comments

Isn't it a color pie break for Underworld Breach to allow red to get reanimation? I thought only BGW could recur permanents

Red has creatures that can reanimate themselves and it gets temporary reanimation. This is a bend.

Red Mana Recursion

New 31 Dec 2019 Asked by gangsines 27 Comments

Underworld Breach is the first card that, with only red mana, can reanimate another creature in your graveyard (i.e. that isn't a self recurring thing like a phoenix). Given that creature recursion (and other permanent recursion) are generally in the purview of black and white, why is this card red? Or alternatively, why is it not restricted to instants/sorceries?

We tend to give bends in sets that push towards the theme. Red does have creatures that can reanimate themselves.

White Creature Reanimation

New 20 Dec 2019 Asked by thoalmighty 34 Comments

Does white still get unconditional creature reanimation? If not, what are the constraints?

Its default is reanimating creatures with CMC 3 or less. It occasional gets to reanimate iconically white things (such as Angels). More infrequently than that it can reanimate any creature.
