Poison in Commander

New 11 Jan 2024 Asked by hodorkotb 59 Comments

Re: PoisonIt has a problem in Commander (or any other free-for-all format) where normally only one player is using it, so the other players aren't contributing to their win condition (unlike damage.) So the best case scenario for the poison player tends to be eliminating one opponent quickly before gassing out/becoming the archenemy and getting eliminated. Are there any plans to address this in future Commander products, perhaps by introducing creatures with toxic and myriad, and/or cards that goad creatures and give them toxic?

I’m not sure there’s a great need to make poison better in Commander.

Common Mechanics Terminology

New 26 Dec 2023 Asked by j-waffles 38 Comments

Is there a term R&D uses to describe cards like “bear with sets mechanic” or “mind rot with sets mechanic” or “cancel with sets mechanic” or the myriad of other examples of (blank) with sets mechanic? I’ve started keeping a list of cards that get the “with sets mechanic” treatment, and I’m curious if there’s a term for all the “root” cards.

“With set mechanic” is basically what we say.

Phyrexian Mana Redesign

New 21 Dec 2023 Asked by zackdes44 55 Comments

I understand Phyrexian Mana causes a myriad of issues in a number of formats, but I'm a big fan. Not necessarily of the overly-powerful cards since I don't play competitive, but for the flexibility it provides and some of the interesting design space that seems available. Do you think we'll see a 'fixed' version, like with cascade/discover or infect/poison, that could be more broadly used and not specifically linked to phyrexians

Phyrexia: All Will Be One and March of the Machine did experiment with using Phyrexian mana in different ways, such as having loyalty as an additional cost and using it in activation costs.

Ixalan's Factional Themes

New 30 Nov 2023 Asked by ragnar-viking 33 Comments

While I absolutely love the Lost Caverns of Ixalan and its additions to the world, I would be sad if our third visit to Ixalan (whenever that'll be) drops the factional typal theme altogether. I get that original Ixalan block didn't do great but I'd argue it wasn't the factional typal theme that dragged down the block but rather myriad of other issues. I feel like the popularity of the commander decks for Lost Caverns of Ixalan supports that the factional typal theme is a very beloved aspect.

I don’t expect to visit Ixalan without seeing Dinosaurs, Pirates, Vampires, and Merfolk. I also expect some light typal themes. I don’t think they’ll be much more than one draft archetype that’s typal though.

Wastes Type Exclusion

New 21 Oct 2023 Asked by aztecmagic 32 Comments

Any reason wastes aren't their own type? They're the only basic out of the 6 that myriad landscape can't ramp with.

It causes headaches with the tournament rules and play design issues with domain, so we chose not to do it.

Popularity of Casual Multiplayer

New 29 May 2022 Asked by jimmycomments 32 Comments

One of the things I really like about both Cut a Deal and things like the new myriad cards is that they're great in general casual multiplayer (as opposed to commander), which was the way I played quite frequently when I started out. Do you know how popular kitchen table multiplayer is? Is it much less popular than one on one kitchen table?

There’s a lot of casual multiplayer played (as best we can tell).

Changing Legendary Rules

New 27 May 2022 Asked by skagerrakgodofdarkness 27 Comments

Would you ever consider changing the rules for Legendary such that copies of legendary permanents are inherently NOT legendary? The flavor would help things like clone, myriad, etc, and make it way more intuitive. There may be rules complications though

If I had my way, legendary would be just a marker.

Flavor of Myriad Mechanic

New 25 May 2022 Asked by zorroaburrito 40 Comments

Seeing different flavor takes on old mechanics is one of my favorite things in mtg, and the CLB flavor for myriad (i.e. a group/squad attacking, as opposed to ethereal clones/spirits/etc) is one of those small details that makes my day. Kudos to those involved.

High fives shall be extended.

Legion Loyalty's Bend

New 24 May 2022 Asked by gollumni 30 Comments

If you don't mind me asking, what makes Legion Loyalty a bend? Myriad originally appeared only on the cycle from 2015 and Blade of Selves, so it seemed like it was something that each color could get, even if making temporary tokens is usually just red

I’m probably being a bit too harsh. In Commander products, white can probably have myriad. In a vacuum, it does less self copying than other colors.

Reminder Text Importance

New 24 May 2022 Asked by drewblive380 37 Comments

So I understand why reminder text is necessary, but I also feel like standard prints of cards get the shaft when it comes to looking clean in the text box. Is there ever a world where people who like the standard prints of cards get copies without reminder text? Considering the extended art prints can show up in set boosters, isn't it possible less enfranchised players could end up with reminder-textless cards anyhow? I mean for instance "Legion Loyalty" has five functional rules words, and frankly neither art is super appealing, considering how deep Myriad is in this set, couldn't this mythic have survived without reminder text?

We sometimes drop the reminder text for variant printings. In general, we like to side with “people can play it” over “it looks cooler”.

Legion Loyalty and Myriad

So with Legion Loyalty fresh in mind: Myriad, bend for white or not?

It’s a bend.

Myriad Mechanic Amendments

New 09 Feb 2021 Asked by ryuujin759 45 Comments

Hey Mark, another one:May I request the mechanic myriad to be changed (errata) slightly so it creates >>non-legendary<< token copies? Thanks for all the hard work and open ears/eyes!

My best guess is this wasn’t done because of commander issues like commander damage. EDIT: My bad. Token copies don’t deal commander damage.

Focus on Dominaria

New 26 Jun 2019 Asked by machinepriestexemplar 45 Comments

I understand that trying to give Dominaria a cohesive identity is not only your goal in modern blocks, but is also a good way to reintroduce the world to a newer audience. However, Dominaria has always been about the myriad of places & cultures that exist there; shoving them all into one set does it 0 justice. Is it possible for future visits to Dominaria to focus on one area of the world? Can we do this with other worlds too, like Ixalan's Torrezon, or the distant land hinted at on Innistrad?

Much as we saw many parts of the plane in Dominaria, a return would likewise probably show many locations, but we’re committed to focusing on it as the “history plane” and not have each visit feel like a different plane.

Design Difficulty Insight

New 20 Feb 2018 Asked by kobayashicircle-deactivated2019 26 Comments

Question 49: what I thought was part of the difficulty is that while Cycling/Miracle and Modular/Scavenge would have hidden synergy less experienced players might not notice, Myriad/Battalion's interaction is non-intuitive and most less-experienced players would get it flat-out wrong, which makes it much more difficult.

Correct.

Green vs Red Copiers

New 15 Aug 2017 Asked by nom-de-clavier-d-ordinateur 54 Comments

Mark, minus myriad, populate, and storm, there are five cards in all of green that make copies that add to the number of creatures on the battlefield, only two of which aren't a creature making copies of itself. Red has eight such cards (again, minus the three previous mechanics), but all those copies are temporary. However, all eight have a much wider selection of targets than green does and most are repeatable effects.

“If you subtract the things that make it a larger number, it’s a smaller number.” Yes, you got me there. : ) Red gets temporary copying. Green makes tokens or goes and gets duplicates out of the library. Green’s version is more permanent and has a greater number of cards (I count them all - plus did you count the duplicate getters?) so I call it number two. But look, both red and green are secondary. They just do it differently. The difference between me calling one #2 and one #3 is a thin division. If you would like to swap the positions in how you personally order them, more power to you.

Faith and Game Content

New 19 Feb 2017 Asked by mightycaseystruckout 31 Comments

Okay, as contrast to the comment about Indian faith, why is sensitivity to that faith being taken into account, but other "pagan" gods are fair game despite there being a myriad of modern-day faiths which still revere them, with millions of practitioners worldwide?

What “pagan” gods are you referring to?

Ante Mechanic Rating

New 13 Dec 2016 Asked by annorax 33 Comments

Why is ante 9 on the storm scale? Given the myriad issues with it and the near-universal dislike of the mechanic, why wouldn't it be 10 or a very flavorful 13?

Ante is a 10 (or higher).

Old Mechanics Return Query

New 25 Oct 2016 Asked by tgva8889 44 Comments

Can I request more cards with mechanics from old Commander products? More cards with experience counters or myriad or tempting offer or stuff like that? Most of those mechanics just don't work very well in non-Commander products but I'd like to see more of them if there's any design space left.

It’s a possibility.

Skithiryx Trivia

New 09 Jul 2015 Asked by fonz85 48 Comments

Hi MaRo, my birthday was two days ago but I think my question got lost in the myriad asks you probably get so, I'll ask again: do you have any trivia on my favorite legendary creature, Skithiryx? If not, any cool trivia regarding Infect will be OK!

Skithirix came about because we wanted a legendary creature with infect. I regret not making it Black/Green to be a better infect Commander. Happy Belated Birthday!

Land Destruction Balance

New 02 Aug 2013 Asked by wasteofzerosandones 9 Comments

Re: Targeted land destruction. You said that those players are a minority, but so are a myriad of other players that you design cards for. In multiplayer games, LD and MLD are used against problematic utility lands, and to act as a balance against ramp. I understand that it "isn't fun", but many people don't find it fun to watch the green player ramp for two turns into a giant game-ending spell. If you truly want balance in MTG, you need MLD if you're going to push ramp.

We still make land destruction. We just don’t cost it aggressively.
