Villain Definition Discussion

New 21 Mar 2024 Asked by readthistobeclean 30 Comments

"Villain *isn’t* inherently a moral term. There are lots of villains in pop culture that aren’t inherently evil." I think you're conflating villain and antagonist. Calling someone a villain means they are "the bad guy" even if they have morally gray motives (very few characters are "inherently evil," but a villain must be up to no good.). Before villain was used for characters specifically, (e.g. in Shakespeare's day) it simply meant a scoundrel or knave.

I don’t mean antagonist. The movies I mentioned (Ocean’s Eleven, The Suicide Squad, Megamind, Malificent, Wicked, Thunderbolts, etc.) have the villains as the protagonists. Yes, they are “bad guys” in the sense that they commit crimes and do things a normal person wouldn’t, and yes, there is plenty of questionable motives, but the stories have them often make decisions and take actions that the audience can identify with.

Criminals in Magic

New 20 Mar 2024 Asked by demstationery 39 Comments

"Vraska is an assassin. Nashi is a ninja. Malcolm and Breeches are pirates. They have all quite literally committed crimes." So for the set it is whether they are criminals that determines if they are villains rather than if they are portrayed as villainous/antagonists

Yes, the villain set is filled with people that are criminals, but there is a wide range of how and why they commit crimes. Some may do it for very sympathetic reasons. Ocean’s 11, The Suicide Squad, Despicable Me, Mastermind, Maleficent, Joker, the upcoming Wicked and Thunderbolts. These are all “villain” stories, but ones where we the audience connects with them (although how much can vary film to film). That said, there are plenty of villainous/antagonistic characters in Thunders of Outlaw Junction. The villain set has a full range of different styles of villain (from ones you sympathize with to ones you don’t).

Squad Mechanic Usage

New 13 Mar 2024 Asked by lykrast 33 Comments

Now that we saw it a second time in the fallout decks, where is Squad on the storm scale?

I’ll call it a 5. I expect us to use it one day in a premier set.

Where is Squad on the Storm Scale? Where would you say it is for Commander products?

I’d call Squad a 5. I expect to see it again.

Squad Mechanic Future

New 01 Dec 2023 Asked by cgreyl3 30 Comments

Can squad work in a standard set, either as a one off on a creature or as an entire faction mechanic? If so where do you place it on the storm scale

I think squad will most likely make it to another set one day. I’ll call it a 5.

Vorthos Commander Legality

New 18 Oct 2023 Asked by johanneswinstonwileyatmse 44 Comments

Hi MaRo! Long time follower, fan, and a huge Vorthos (Still a little salty about my story squad being systematically dismantled by the Phyrexians lol) but I have a curious question. I can't seem to get a definitive answer from my friends (both are L2 judges), so I was hoping you could help me settle the debate.I know that technically Vorthos is an unofficial commander (and my playgroup gave the okay) but I was wondering if, since The Doctor is a named character in Universes Beyond, could I play a 5 Color Vorthos Doctor Who deck? Or does it have to be Magic Story Specific card since Universes Beyond us technically outside the main MTG story continuity? Many thanks and I'll catch you on the flipside!

Vorthos is allowed to name any character that appears on a Magic card, and that includes all Universes Beyond cards. So yes, you can name The Doctor. And all the Doctors are essentially the same character.

Ability Renaming UB Sets

New 24 Jun 2023 Asked by blazinjsin 44 Comments

"Could we ever see a UB set rename an ability word like I could imagine Covent having been renamed fellowship" "It’s a possibility." Kicker was renamed Squad in 40K

Renaming existing abilities is within the purview of Universes Beyond sets. Note that squad is not really an example of this. Many mechanics could just be kicker.

Boros Mechanic Return

Could squad return as a mechanic for boros?

Hypothetically.

Squad.

Squad and Kicker Relation

New 08 Apr 2023 Asked by blazinjsin 31 Comments

"I’d call Squad a 4. I expect to see it again." Any chance it gets made to count for things that look for kicker since it is literally Multi-Kicker renamed?

Little chance of that happening. As long time readers know, kicker and multi kicker are a little too broad.

Squad's Storm Scale

Tarkir's Direction Change

New 01 Apr 2023 Asked by myswimmingfurybouquetstuff 36 Comments

I can't believe we are finally going back to Tarkir! Though understandably most people are angry with the set being based around shard colored jellyfish factions instead of wedge colored dragon factions.
What led you to move Tarkir in that direction?

I’ve become a little obsessed with starfish ever since the last Suicide Squad movie.

Storm Scale Placement

Appreciation for Commander Legends Team

New 29 May 2022 Asked by nik-murphy 28 Comments

Hi Mark! Will you pass along my thanks to the commander legends: boulders gate team and to the whole D&D squad? Last September (of 2021) my nephew, who’s 8 with adhd, asked me to teach him how to play D&D. Because of AFR, he now asks me to pick up the alternate art cards so he can make his own D&D binder! It’s something that we both look forward to, each week that he comes over?

Thanks for sharing your story. : )

Flavor of Myriad Mechanic

New 25 May 2022 Asked by zorroaburrito 40 Comments

Seeing different flavor takes on old mechanics is one of my favorite things in mtg, and the CLB flavor for myriad (i.e. a group/squad attacking, as opposed to ethereal clones/spirits/etc) is one of those small details that makes my day. Kudos to those involved.

High fives shall be extended.

'New Modular' Naming and Status

New 04 Mar 2022 Asked by oooblyjooblies 25 Comments

Does R&D have an unofficial name for the 'new Modular' seen recently on cards like Iron Apprentice, Parish-Blade Trainee and Spiteful Squad? Is it anywhere close to becoming evergreen, given its relatively frequent use?

Just “fixed modular”. : )
