Hello mark, I'd like to request my birthday trivia by asking you some trivia of one of my favourite card of all times, Spiritmonger!

Spiritmonger was part of an event where the audience sent in suggestions and then voted on the card concept for a creature. Happy Birthday!

Squallmonger Race Issue

New 04 Apr 2022 Asked by llanowarminotaur 76 Comments

With all of today's discussion of Mongers and creature types, I'm reminded of a bit of Monger trivia. While four of the Mongers have also been given races via typeline errata, Squallmonger's art depicts a bizarre humanoid creature with four arms and three-fingered hands that is not seen anywhere else, and so has never been given a race. When can we expect a return of this unnammed race so that Squallmonger can finally flesh out its typeline?

Everyday I learn about things players want addressed that I didn’t even know was an issue.

Thingers or Doers Request

New 04 Apr 2022 Asked by pantswithoutlegholes 36 Comments

the batch that everybody really wants is bringer, monger, and volver. you could call them "thingers" or "doers" because their creature types aren't evocative of a specific form but simply imply that they do a thing.

That’s the first time I’ve had this request.

High Beeble Scale Creature Types

New 11 Oct 2021 Asked by koriko99 53 Comments

Why are so many creature types that are unique to magic high on the beeble scale? Spike (7), Slith (7), Beeble (10), Atog (7), Bringer (9), Brushwagg (8), Homarid (8), Lhurgoyf (7), Licid (9 1/2), Monger (9), Nephilim (8), Noggle (8), Ouphe (9), Phelddagrif (9 1/2). These original creatures were a huge reason I fell in love with earlier magic and I feel like you guys have basically abandoned most of them in favor of more generic creatures.

Two things:1) There are also a bunch lower down on the scale. We have a lot of unique things to Magic. 2) A bunch you have listed aren’t unique to Magic (like noggle or ouphe).

Effects of Player-Activated Abilities

New 09 Aug 2020 Asked by josephrandisi 31 Comments

Hi Mark, I know you said Mongers are a 9 on the Beeble scale, but what's the likelihood of a creatures or enchantments that let any player activate their color specific effects for generic mana? Like a green creature or enchantment that let any player put a basic into play tapped.

Effects that any player can activate are pretty complex. They imply that a player must constantly monitor every ability of all other players.

Ifh-Biff Efreet Origins

New 04 Oct 2018 Asked by saladthunder 86 Comments

Hi Mark! It's my birthday this week and I 'd like to ask about one of my favorite cards from my first go around with MtG back in the mid-90 -- Ifh-Biff Efreet. Do you have any trivia on it or its cousin Squallmonger (besides the Serendib misprint)? Or maybe a comment on how bad a color bend/break it is and what color it wouldn't be problematic in?

Ifh-Bifh Efreet got its name from Richard Garfield’s sister Elizabeth. When he was little, he couldn’t say Elizabeth and called her “Ifh-Bifh”. Happy Birthday!

Analyzing Angrath's Character

New 11 Sep 2018 Asked by dornith2 112 Comments

About B/R representation, I loved Angrath for exactly this reason. Yeah, he's still full of rage and murder, but his primary motive for the entire Ixalan story is to go back to his family. It's a wonderfully sympathetic character when I was completely expecting a bland kill-monger.

Black/red has more depth than some believe.

Hybrid Cards Explanation

New 30 May 2017 Asked by bobbymcbobbo 47 Comments

Even though hybrid cards can be cast with only a single colour, they aren't a single colour. When you have Balefire Liege on the battlefield and cast a Boros Reckoner, you get to bolt an opponent and gain 3 life, regardless of whether you're in a mono-white deck, mono-red deck, or a RW deck. Commander isn't about what cards you can cast, it's a deckbuilding restriction on colour identity, and Boros Reckoner is always Red and White, even if you're only planning to cast it with a single colour.

Color identity is about what colors are required to cast or activate you. There are plenty of cards that can become a color that is different from what cast them (Caldera Kavu, Kavu Chameleon, Painter’s Servant, Rainbow Crow, Scrapbasket, Spiritmonger,Wild Mongrel, etc.) that don’t require you playing a five-color commander.

Green Colour Changing

New 30 Jul 2016 Asked by somnomancer-deactivated20190915 23 Comments

Is "colour changing" still in Green's colour pie? (eg. Wild Mongrel and Spiritmonger)

We’ve greatly lessened color mattering so it’s not something we’ve had to address for a long time. Maybe.

Spiritmonger Creation Story

New 27 Jul 2016 Asked by dbhoover 33 Comments

I have been reading your blog for a couple years and this is my first birthday trivia question. Spiritmonger from apocalypse was the first rare card I really wanted to find when I first started playing. I have heard a rumor that it was a card created by the public somehow, Is this true? If so how can I get the story of how it happened? Thank you

The card wasn’t created by the public. The card concept (what it flavorfully represents) was. The card was then designed to match the audience’s concept. Happy Birthday! #WotCStaff

Villains Narrative

New 17 Jul 2016 Asked by varazil-deactivated20180910 78 Comments

When it comes to the Gatewatch my main concern is that villains are being trivialized for their sake. The eldrazi certainly caused a lot of destruction and Ob Nixilis put up a fight, but ultimately plot contrivances and timely rescues were firmly on the side of the Gatewatch. I worry that future villains, Garruk, Phyrexians and Bolas, will suffer similarly and just get steamrolled and foiled. The end of Alara was disappointing for the same reason. Bolas won, but deus ex machina saved Ajani.

Let’s check in on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Iron Monger? Defeated.
Abomination? Defeated.
Whiplash? Defeated.
Loki? Foiled but not defeated.
Red Skull? Defeated.
Loki? Okay this time defeated.
The Chitauri? Defeated.
Mandarin? Essentially defeated.
Aldrich Killian? Defeated.
Malekith? Defeated.
Winter Soldier? Not defeated, but then not truly a villain.
HYDRA? Mostly defeated, at least the top people.
Crossbones? Defeated.
Ronan? Defeated.
Ultron? Defeated.
Yellowjacket? Defeated.
Baron Zemo? Technically defeated, but one could argue he still won. The Marvel films still have drama and good storytelling. The villains are still real threats and compelling. In each case, things looked bad for the heroes. They were outgunned and in trouble, but they do what heroes do and found a way to win despite the obstacles. Heroes most often in the end defeating the villains is a staple of the archetype we’re telling. Marvel has some of the coolest villains. They still lose in the end a lot.

National Unicorn Day

New 09 Apr 2016 Asked by goldgaridelve 38 Comments

Apparently twitter tells me it's national unicorn day. Can we get some unicorn appropriate trivia?

There are currently 12 creatures with the subtype Unicorn. Of those only two don’t have the word “Unicorn” in their name - Noble Quarry and Wishmonger. Happy National Unicorn Day everyone!
