Poison in Commander

New 11 Jan 2024 Asked by hodorkotb 59 Comments

Re: PoisonIt has a problem in Commander (or any other free-for-all format) where normally only one player is using it, so the other players aren't contributing to their win condition (unlike damage.) So the best case scenario for the poison player tends to be eliminating one opponent quickly before gassing out/becoming the archenemy and getting eliminated. Are there any plans to address this in future Commander products, perhaps by introducing creatures with toxic and myriad, and/or cards that goad creatures and give them toxic?

I’m not sure there’s a great need to make poison better in Commander.

Stickers on Cards

New 08 Oct 2022 Asked by yoshifawful64 22 Comments

If a card with a sticker on it is flipped or transformed, what happens to the sticker? What about being turned face down/face up (or exiled face down by Free-for-All)?

Treat stickers like counters for purposes of Morph or transforming cards.

Unfinity Collector Requests

New 03 Oct 2022 Asked by jeffsachs 32 Comments

Hey Mark,

I want to thank you for giving Unfinity Collector Boosters a "list" slot. This is going to help me in my dream of making a fully foiled all un-card Commander deck (to get the best use of Super Secret Tech). I would like to request foil printings of: Timmy, Power Gamer; Strategy, Schmategy; Bronze Calendar; Jack-in-the-Mox; Checks and Balances; Common Courtesy; Free-for-All; Cheatyface; and Underdome.

In addition the following are really hard to get a hold of in foil and could use a reprint: Johnny, Combo Player; Who/What/When/Where/Why; Gleemax; Mox Lotus; City of Ass; Super Secret Tech.Thank you for all you've done for silly magic!

You’re welcome. I wish you the best of luck in your mission.

Commander Deck in Two-Headed-Giant

New 08 Jun 2022 Asked by mataleon 38 Comments

Hello Mark, also my play group doesn’t enjoy the political aspects of free-for-all commander games, so we started playing two-headed-giant with commander deck construction. There are some cards that become overpowered (scheming simmetry being the biggest offender) but overall it’s a blast!

Sounds fun!

It’s a team sport, but played with just two teams.

Origins Approach Reception

New 16 Feb 2020 Asked by brothervalencio-deactivated2021 60 Comments

How well-received was the Origins approach to planes (ie. small slices of ten different planes, rather than the single-plane focus of most expansions or the free-for-all of core sets)?

The audience liked it. It was very hard to do on our end.

Multiplayer Card Design

New 01 Feb 2020 Asked by boltedmonkeyman-deactivated2023 31 Comments

I understand not wanting to reference non-Standard formats (e.g. "Commander") in Standard sets, but could I request more Standard cards that acknowledge the existence of multiplayer in general? Like Surge in Oath of the Gatewatch or the Battlebond Lands. Magic's infrastructure directly supports multiplayer, but it's rarely utilized outside of a few "each opponent" cards. It would make Two-Headed Giant and non-EDH free-for-all formats so much richer.

All cards work in multiplayer. We reserve cards that specifically reference multiplayer (mostly) for products that focus on multiplayer play.

Aggressive Creatures Query

New 03 Jan 2020 Asked by micros0ftsam 52 Comments

When you are designing aggressive creatures, do you consider multiplayer environments like Commander? In a free-for-all, just a 1 mana 2 power creature tends to be very low impact.

Not every card is for every format.

Politics in Multiplayer

New 19 Oct 2019 Asked by reluctantpinecone 19 Comments

Would it help the politics/Commander discussion to shift a bit and say that ANY free-for-all multiplayer game has a chance of getting into politics? As someone who also isn’t particularly into Commander, I can’t help but wonder if people are getting defensive because they interpret the discussion as implying the problem is specific to the format, but I know I’ve experienced a certain amount of politics in non-Commander multiplayer games as well. Just a thought.

Yes, the politics issue is for any multiplayer format where who you attack/cast spells against is not prescribed by the format. For example, Two-Headed Giant isn’t political because who you work with and against is clearly spelled out.

Free-For-All Rules

New 11 May 2017 Asked by ngenisis-deactivated20190225 13 Comments

Un-Rules question: If a noncreature card is exiled with Free-For-All (e.g. a crewed Vehicle), can it be returned later? Free-For-All specifies creature card.

Anything set aside can come back.

Module Cycle Artwork

New 08 Sep 2016 Asked by false---prophet 29 Comments

Was it ever considered that the Module cycle would have "spill over" art? Like the original Zendikar land art or Free-for-All + I'm Rubber, You're Glue.

The art of the Modules already connect.

Marathon Tribal Event

New 26 May 2016 Asked by meradric 64 Comments

Happy Birthday MaRo! When I was in university we founded a campus Magic club One event we ran was called 'Tribal' You had to choose a creature type, 60% non-land were creatures of the type, and the other 40% had to be thematic. We decided to run this event as a free-for-all multiplayer game with about 20 players. The game took 10 hours, and multiple players ended their turn, left to go to the store, and came back before their turn came back around. Clerics won at somewhere over 1000 life.

Ricochet's Team Chaos

New 16 Dec 2015 Asked by amtgplayer 10 Comments

How is Ricochet specifically designed for team play? The way I see it, it creates chaos, no matter whether the game is one-on-one, team play, or free-for-all.

It is extra chaotic in a team game.

Record Damage Attack

"What's the most damage you've ever attacked for if you remember?" "I do remember. 27,648 damage done by Chameleon Colossus in a multi-player free-for-all side event at the 2007 Magic World Championships in New York City." Don't forget the best part: you did this before Chameleon Colossus was even a publicly released card!

Yes. Each R&D member had one preview card in their deck we were supposed to show off at the event. Mission accomplished! : )

Zzzyxas's Abyss Rules

New 22 Mar 2015 Asked by marboso-blog 16 Comments

My friend has created a cube centred on free-for-all-play. He loves morph cards and he loves cards from the Unhinged set. Now he put Zzzyxas's Abyss into the cube and I'm a bit confused: What happens to face down creatures if Zzzyxas's Abyss? Are they ignored because they have no name or are they destroyed because nothing precedes something as the Unhinged FAQ states it?

Nothing preceded something. As you said, it’s in the FAQ.

Silver Border Stretch

New 06 Sep 2014 Asked by zanmor 14 Comments

Is Free-for-All really silver border? It seems an awful lot like Thieves' Auction.

The boundaries of black border keep stretching so cards that were originally printed in silver border may now be doable in black border. Free-for-All is in this camp.
