Concerns Over Emergency Ban

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by yoggh777 15 Comments

Mark. Please pass along this feedback to the appropriate people please. Thank you. The decision to not have an emergency ban on nadu in modern is deeply concerning, the best case scenario is that we have a few weeks of terrible magic and then a ban hits this deck and we have to hope it wasn't obscuring any other must ban issues the format. The worst case is you stick to no bans mid season and modern season is entirely unplayable. This deck is immensely powerful and slows down events like eggs

I will pass along the message.

Mystery in Menu Choices

New 03 Jul 2024 Asked by werewolfcommanderplayer 9 Comments

I order some scrambled eggs knowing that the eggs came from a chicken. Sometimes a quail or a duck, but at least its a bird. I get concerned when the menu tells me they will be serving iguana eggs. I know it's an egg. I know how they'll cook it. I'm gonna be sitting nervously at my table regardless. When it gets served to me and it turns out to be nothing like what I know scrambled eggs to be like, I'm not going to be thrilled to see the seasonal menu next week list shark eggs.

There is a lot of consistency in Magic: the rules, the color pie, templating, etc. Creative is the place where we take, and have taken, the most liberty in pushing new boundaries.

Eggs.

Mana Production Comparison

New 05 May 2024 Asked by aalgot 43 Comments

“Lands produce colorless mana at a rate over three times higher than artifacts”But lands also often produce colored mana whereas when an artifact produces mana it is almost invariably colorless.

Banners, cameos, cluestones, crystals, diamonds, eggs, keyrunes, lockets, monuments, moxes, Myr, obelisks, signets, and talismans beg to differ. And those are just the cycles. : )

Perspective on Land Destruction

New 21 Feb 2024 Asked by lavilledieu 30 Comments

Each time land destruction becomes the topic, you put this playstyle away as unfun because people don't get to play the game. Yet we get powerful counterspells and powerful tax effects (including ward). In standard, I've had games on the draw where I did nothing because of Thalia followed by Anointed Peackeeper or Elite Spellbinder. Thalia is basically like -1 land if you wanted to play one noncreature, worse if you wanted to play more. It gets even worse: Thalia or the other creatures mentioned do win games, unlike a Stone Rain or similar. Now, I do share the belief we don't need more stone rains, it's too much all eggs in one basket, but cards like Waking the Trolls did a step in the good direction of being interesting and disruptive without being oppressive.
So my take is: people overestimate land destruction, don't let that stop you, as there is a lot of design space here.

We are very careful with counterspells, discard, and taxing for the very reasons you state. Long ago there existed a “permissions deck” which was basically nothing but counterspells and countered almost every spell. We don’t allow that (or a discard deck that makes you discard every spell) anymore.

Designing for Disruptive Desires

New 28 Dec 2023 Asked by yuleooze 32 Comments

How does wizards design for audiences that have desires that disrupt balance or have "bad play patterns"? Think fans of affinity, storm, "eggs" decks, taking turns decks, or the new Geological Appraiser combo deck. Most of the time these strategies get a card banned so its tough to enjoy these for a satisfying length of time.

We design cards for that group. We just keep the overall power level capped in competitive play. You can play with friends and ignore bans if you want a higher power level.

Defender on Eggs

New 27 Nov 2023 Asked by ragnar-viking 26 Comments

I've loved the "The Lost Caverns of Ixalan" both main set and the commander decks, my thanks to everyone. However I found it unusual that both the Egg tokens of "Palani's Hatcher" and the card "Dinosaur Egg" are missing the defender keyword that are commonly seen on eggs. Any particular reasons why defender didn't appear for these Eggs?

We try not to put defender on cards where it isn’t needed.

Card Mechanics Question

New 10 Nov 2023 Asked by ad33dwithoutaname 24 Comments

Why is the line "if you control one or more eggs" necessary in Palani's Hatcher? If you didn't control any, you wouldn't be able to sacrifice an egg, right?

But it will still create the 3/3 green Dinosaur creature token, which wasn’t the intent.

Rukh Egg Reference

New 02 Nov 2023 Asked by sombramainexe 27 Comments

Would you ever print a card like Rukh Egg pre-rules clarification where it worked from anywhere? It's an interesting part of magic history that would be neat to reference, at least from an un-set.

Note that wasn’t the intent of the card, but bad templating. We have played around with graveyard triggers that work when coming from other zones.

Artifact Definition Broadness

New 11 Sep 2023 Asked by doesthewormthinkthatsthewayweall 75 Comments

I think food doesn't feel like it meshes with artifacts because artifacts have been supported in the direction of metal, robots, etc. for so long. This will hopefully even out over time as more cards similar to food are made. Because I agree that card types should be a high barrier, and artifact is for physical things. But this raises the issue: does "artifact" capture the broadness of "physical thing"? I think its a legit wrinkle that food doesn't >feel< like an "artifact" by most definitions.

Here are objects that were artifacts in Alpha: an egg, a prism, a flower, multiple glasses, a mask, a cup, a book, a bell, and many precious gems. Yes, there were also objects that were more metal-y and robot-y, but the idea that Artifacts is only tied to those things has never been true in the history of the game. Artifacts were various objects from day one.

Food as Artifact Logic

New 11 Sep 2023 Asked by nightfiremelody 66 Comments

Hi Mark! I don't like to play the "um, actually" game, but as others have pointed out, Food is by definition an artifact, since artifacts are just things that people have made. If you take clay and turn it into a pot, that's an artifact, same as if you take flour and eggs and what-not and turn it into a cake. You could even argue that raw meat, once it has been removed from an animal, is an artifact, since its form has been significantly changed by a person. Raw fruits and vegetables are a little more dicey (pun intended), but overall, Food is just an artifact by common sense.

I’m firmly in the Food is an artifact camp.

Easter Egg Designs

Un-set Modal Cards

If/When: An un-set modal card with flavor words of "If" or "When"? A little easter eggs for the question marks.

A Blogatog Un-set would be fun (but far too small an audience to make it financially feasible).Suggest some card titles for the Blogatog Un-set.

Unfinity Praise

As THE preeminent Un-fan, I would sincerely vote for Unfinity as the best Un-set that you've ever done - nitpicks aside, it was a great theme, great mechanics, great Easter eggs for the enfranchised, and just a great total experience at the release event - even made some new friends. :) High fives to all involved, and excited to see what you come up with next time (because there MUST be a next time)!

Thank you. So happy you enjoyed it.

Resolute Veggiesaur Praise

Mark, as a vegan and someone who’s always loved dinosaurs since I was young, it is so cool to see Resolute Veggiesaur. Always wanted a veg creature in magic so I’m happy this was made and is even eternal legal. Shout out to whoever designs and did the creative/flavor text on it

Glad you like it.

Limited Formats in Design

New 06 Jun 2022 Asked by jacewindu 34 Comments

Hi Mark. I’m seeing a disconnect in some questions and answers. You’ve recently answered a few questions by saying that limited exists to make use of cards that have to exist anyway (and I do understand that those cards need to exist anyway). But you’ve also answered numerous times that thing X can’t be done (or is difficult to do) because it would impact limited. I think that’s where some people lose you - it would seem that if limited was ONLY a way to make use of cards that had to exist anyway, it shouldn’t create limitations on the designs for sets or cards. Could you perhaps expand on this to help people understand how the format can exist to make use of cards that have to be there anyway while simultaneously it impacts the design of said cards? Feels like a chicken/egg situation.

I think people are conflating two different things. Limited definitely impacts how a set is designed. We change how individual cards are designed, especially at lower rarities, to maximize their impact on limited formats (which also tends to adjust cards for super casual play - aka cards I own). What limited formats do not do is set the average power level of a set. Luckily, the cards that matter most for adjusting limited formats tend to not be the cards that are going to impact the constructed formats. Why a particular powerful reprint is not in the set is a result of power level concerns and not limited play.
