Promoting Polarized Opinions

New 29 Jun 2024 Asked by yuleooze 13 Comments

"we prefer topics getting 1&2's and 9&10's than just everyone grading it a 7" why though? Yall are intentionally eliciting a negative experience, and for what? If everybody gives a set a 7, thats a higher grade than if there are an equal amount of 1&2's as 9&10's. Better yet, shoot for the low grade to be a 3 or 4 by shaving off the things that are undeniably going to cause a 1 or 2. In the case of Duskmourn having Mtg versions of a TV set with holograms or a prism based projector would be a less polarizing option. I'm sure you have days where you wake up knowing we are going to see something that will cause love or hate reactions and that can just be a love or meh instead.

To quote myself: “If everyone likes your game, but no one loves it, it will fail.”

Snow Basics Issue

New 20 Apr 2024 Asked by jjarnone-blog 28 Comments

You've said that R+D thinks snow basics were a mistake. Is that because your deck can play any number of them? Or is it because they also lend themselves to the entirety of the basic land eco-system of stuff like being fetchable by prismatic vista, safe from wasteland/blood moon effects, etc.?

All of the above.

Multicolor Card Frames

New 08 Apr 2024 Asked by aalgot 52 Comments

Why do multi color cards have gold frames instead of prismatic wardrobe style frames that are all their colors?

Legends chose to make them gold frames, I assume because it was early days and it simplified things. I, along with others, pitched we change two-color cards to frames with two colors (three plus would still be gold, as they looked ugly when you got too many colors). We even had them designed. The popularity and inertia of gold frames kept it from happening. Then when we made hybrid, I suggested we use the frames we’d made for the two-color frames, and it was accepted.

Special Rarity Cards

New 14 Feb 2024 Asked by lhurgyof-blog 22 Comments

Are the Prismatic Piper and the Time shifted cards from Time Spiral the only cards from packs with a special rarity?

It depends how you define “special rarity”? Under most definitions, no, there are others.

Prismatic Piper Rarity

New 05 Feb 2024 Asked by su92 24 Comments

"You mean, Chandler or Joven?" You made The Prismatic Piper cry, Mark.

He’s not technically common, as he shows up at a rarity more common than common. He does have a common rarity symbol (as we didn’t know what else to give him), so it’s a gray area.

Artifact Definition Broadness

New 11 Sep 2023 Asked by doesthewormthinkthatsthewayweall 75 Comments

I think food doesn't feel like it meshes with artifacts because artifacts have been supported in the direction of metal, robots, etc. for so long. This will hopefully even out over time as more cards similar to food are made. Because I agree that card types should be a high barrier, and artifact is for physical things. But this raises the issue: does "artifact" capture the broadness of "physical thing"? I think its a legit wrinkle that food doesn't >feel< like an "artifact" by most definitions.

Here are objects that were artifacts in Alpha: an egg, a prism, a flower, multiple glasses, a mask, a cup, a book, a bell, and many precious gems. Yes, there were also objects that were more metal-y and robot-y, but the idea that Artifacts is only tied to those things has never been true in the history of the game. Artifacts were various objects from day one.

Creature Type Clarification

New 16 Nov 2022 Asked by j-waffles 32 Comments

Re: “I don’t think it gets much leaner than one”It actually can. There are some creature types with NO cards. Caribou and prism, for instance, are official creature types, but no cards have those types. Caribou tokens can be made with the card caribou range, and prism tokens can be made with the card diamond kaleidoscope. There are other examples too, but those were the only ones from the top of my head

If a card makes tokens of a creature type that counts as a card for that creature’s theme.

Cards as Bookmarks

New 18 Aug 2022 Asked by titania776 85 Comments

You once said that a true waste of a card isn’t the one that people complain about its the ones that people just forget about. That really stuck with me because there are so many fun cards that i have played with but don’t really have any use for. So whenever i fall in love with a card i now sleeve it and use them as book marks. Some of my favorites are cryptic spires, the prismatic piper, lost auramacers and keeper of the lens. In a weird way it has provided an extra layer of joy to my reading because now when i open my book i am reminded of my favorite game with a card that fell throw the cracks in one way or another.

Sunburst Mechanic Doubts

New 13 Jul 2022 Asked by greg502 27 Comments

Will we ever see a land that produces mana that counts as 2 (or more) colors for Sunburst and the like (e.g. Adds a single W that counts as both W and R mana for Prismatic Ending)

I’m not sure the confusion is worth the design space. The former is big and the latter is small.

White Mana Symbol Discrepancy

New 07 May 2022 Asked by anjodian 22 Comments

Hello Mark, regarding your white mana symbol question: Prismatic Ward (and Fylgja, the other white promo from Ice Age) were printed in the set with the old symbol. There's an Ask Wizards from January 2007 from Kelly Digges that I linked in the earlier post; as he put it, "having all printed copies of a given card match was viewed as more important than consistency within the set." For years the only online images available were later mockups with the new symbol though!

Trivia on White Mana

New 06 May 2022 Asked by icycaveman 37 Comments

Hi Mark, Do you have any trivia for the previous White mana symbol?

It’s the only mana symbol to have a major redesign. The “new” one premiered in Ice Age. There was a white promo card, Prismatic Ward, the came out before the set that has the old white mana symbol, while the one in the set has the new one.

Target Player Card Mechanic

New 11 Feb 2022 Asked by what-i-cant-hear-you 27 Comments

"target player draws a card" is also used for modal or cantrip spells that target a permanent, so they don't fizzle if the permanent is removed. Prismari Command, for example.

Good point.

Color Pie Imbalance in Older Formats

New 10 Nov 2021 Asked by sandwurmfood 30 Comments

Hey Mark! I have a question about the color pie and how it relates to non-rotating constructed formats. As I understand it black is supposed to be he best at spot removing creatures and planeswalkers but in formats like modern and older it’s options have to compete against the likes of Unholy Heat, Prismatic Ending, Path to Exile, Lightning Bolt, etc all of which do this thing in more powerful ways than black’s options like Fatal Push. Does the council of colors have any interest in balancing out this aspect of the color pie for those formats or does the color pie simply matter less in these places than it does for limited and standard?

There’s not much we can do to color correct older formats; they’re very much formed by the mistakes of the past. If you prefer playing with a more pure version of the color pie, limited and Standard are better formats for you.

Amdicotomy of Token Vs Land Variants

New 24 Oct 2021 Asked by chetskolos 48 Comments

About token lands... Galazeth Prismari creates treasure and gives them (and other artifacts) the ability to tap for mana without sacrifice; Replicating Ring creates 8 artifact tokens that tap for mana... why is creating token artifacts that tap for mana OK but token lands a problem?

It’s an issue of volume.

Spotlight on New Removal Spells

New 15 Aug 2021 Asked by elspethconquersbreathmouthwash 39 Comments

To the player who asked about white getting a new "constructed-playable monocolored spot removal spell": Portable Hole (from AFR) and Prismatic Ending (from MH2) are two new cards that fit the criteria and both are powerful enough that they're being played in Modern and Legacy

Wallpaper Release Concern

New 08 Jun 2021 Asked by machinepriestexemplar 52 Comments

Hey Mark, I know that most people won't care about this request, but it matters a lot to me. When wallpapers are released on the MtG site, can ALL cards in a cycle be released? It seems like only the "popular" cards in a cycle get released. For example, Prismari Command, Witherbloom Command, and Quandrix Command all got wallpapers on the site, but Silverquill Command didn't, and I was really excited for it. This has actually happened to me multiple times in the past where the art of a card in a cycle isn't released but others are, and it's really frustrating. Can you notify the appropriate people that maybe releasing all wallpapers of a cycle of cards at the same time would rectify this?

There are limitations to how many can get released. Saying cycles can only be released as a cycle would drastically cut down how often we put up art from cards in cycles.

Colorless Nonartifact Commander Request

New 19 Mar 2021 Asked by cwnate 49 Comments

Can i request a colorless nonartifact noneldrazi commander? I almost got happy with the Prismatic Piper, but colorless is not a color and choosing a color is not optional so...

I assume we’ll make one eventually, but it’s a pretty niche request.

Land Color Representation

New 16 Nov 2019 Asked by hejemony 62 Comments

hi mark. do you happen to know why recent five colour fetch-esque lands prismatic vista and fabled passage are gold while evolving wilds is grey? does this represent a change to how lands are coloured or am i missing a variable? thanks!

No, it’s a change. We like lands to give you a hint what color they give you access to. Gold does a better job of visually conveying any color.

Prophetic Prism Trivia

New 18 Aug 2019 Asked by zennithgp 35 Comments

Hey, MaRo! I've been reading since the beginning, but never had a birthday question to ask UNTIL TODAY! Do you have any trivia about my favorite card, Prophetic Prism? (And, as ever, thank you so much for your interactions with the community. I don't think I'd be a game designer today if you hadn't given me the confidence and knowledge to pursue my dream.)

Prophetic Prism is a good example of us trying to create a common mana fixer, but having an ability not worth a full card, so we make it a cantrip to make it worthwhile for players to put it in their deck.Happy Birthday!

Nonbasic vs Basic Lands

New 10 Dec 2018 Asked by disarmedsmile 17 Comments

I think there are already cards that make nonbasic lands count as basic lands. Prismatic Omen and Nylea's presence come to mind.

Those cards make nonbasic lands every basic land type. That’s not the same as making them basic lands. For example, they can still be destroyed by a spell which says “Destroy target nonbasic land.”
