Convoke

Balancing Unique versus Popular Mechanics

New 30 Jun 2024 Asked by andalon-historian 13 Comments

How do you navigate the tension between uniqueness value (this beloved mechanic shows up once every ten years, so its appearance is an exciting event!) versus giving players what they like (cycling and kicker falling in popularity as they become mundane). With something like Mistform Ultimus --> Changelings, the answer is obvious: It ceases to be unique when a set comes along that needs it. With the decision to make landfall (and now convoke) deciduous, it seems a lot less clear. How do you weigh the demand for popular mechanics against them inevitably becoming less popular?

Mechanics have a splash value and a practical value. The splash value starts high and declines with time. The practical value grows as we better understand its uses from a design perspective. We try to milk the splash value as best we can, but once that is mostly used up, we focus on practical value.Long-term, the practical value is more important than the splash value as it’s what we be impactful for the larger portion of the mechanic’s life.

Convoke Mechanic Status

Is convoke now deciduous? It’s been showing up a lot lately. Personally it’s one of my favorite mechanics and a great tool for white so I’m excited either way that we’re seeing more of it.

Yes, convoke is deciduous.

Convoke Mechanic Clarity

New 04 May 2024 Asked by pichujc 36 Comments

Hello Mark, after the recent MH3 reveals I was looking around and was surprised to learn that Convoke can't cover the colorless only costs on spells like Null Elemental Blast, as it's neither a generic cost nor colored mana by definition. It's admittedly a very niche interaction, but I feel like this is a bit unintuitive. Do you think there would be any value in updating Convoke so you could pay for colorless only mana with colorless creatures?

Assuming we don’t make cards that have both colorless mana costs and convoke, I just don’t think it’s something that will come up, except in hypotheticals. I agree it’s non-intuitive.

Cost Mechanics Insight

New 10 Mar 2024 Asked by dude1818 43 Comments

Collect evidence isn't anything like other mechanics. The phrase gets embedded inside other phrases and sentences, but it still needs reminder text, which gets shunted to elsewhere in the text box. If it was just a normal kicker ability, there would be a single line at the top of the text box that said "collect evidence N (as an additional cost, etc)". It should just be kicker, and you can't use kicker in activated abilities

Discard, life payments, colorless mana, Phyrexian mana, snow mana - there are plenty of costs that work both in mana costs and activation costs. The fact that some “cost” mechanics like convoke only work in mana costs and not activation costs is a bug, not a feature. As we design new things, we are finding ways to fix that bug.

Mechanic Rule Updates

New 18 Jan 2024 Asked by thepiebandit 14 Comments

For a mechanic you feel is outdated, would you ever consider updating the rules for it? I.e. just adding ward 2 to morphs and manifests? R&D has changed rules for power level reasons in the past (cascade, companion) though always to make it weaker.
If old draft formats would be a problem there could always be a limited only rule to play it as first designed (similar to commander legends granting partner to mono colored legends in draft)

It depends what the change is. We have updated how some mechanics work, like convoke, as an example.

Cost Reduction Mechanics

New 08 Aug 2023 Asked by notmakingablog71 31 Comments

Do you think abilities like affinity or convoke could ever be reworked to also reduce the cost of activated abilities? It seems like abilities with cost reduction written out for them show up in most sets nowadays, and it might be nice to use existing terms and tech.

Mana costs and activation costs work differently enough under the hood of the rules that it’s tricky to use a single term to refer to both. I know it’s been looked at.

Appreciating Commander Decks

New 09 Jun 2023 Asked by sheebslysheebs 46 Comments

Compliment, not a question! I'm a big fan of the Food commander deck in the LotR set, and I was also a big big fan of the Party Time deck and the MOM convoke deck. I really appreciate the commander decks that look at past mechanics and flesh them out in interesting ways that wouldn't really work out in a bigger set. So kudos to the team on those cool decks!

I’ll pass along the compliments to the teams that build them.

Convoke and Madness

New 09 May 2023 Asked by pedrofeliperocha 41 Comments

That card with convoke and madness from MAT reminded me of Modern Horizons design... but inside of a premier set! What exactly made something like that possible? Ps: madness is love.. please, please, please give us more!

We allowed March of the Machine: The Aftermath to have a bit more splashing of nonevergreen mechanics. We’re still figuring out what the rules for a product like it should be.

Convoke Flexibility

New 01 May 2023 Asked by idan1234 32 Comments

Could a card be made that could convoke as if it was 2+ creatures?

It’s easier to just make a creature that enters the battlefield with a creature token.

Affinity Convoke Combo

If or when; affinity and convoke appearing on the same card?

If. They overlap too much in function.

Huge fan of the new twist on convoke in MOM. Always fun to see old tech used new ways. More of that, please!

Will do.

Convoke Mechanic Query

New 25 Apr 2023 Asked by j-waffles 40 Comments

If there were a convoke spell with the colorless mana symbol in its cost, could a colorless creature convoke that part of the cost?

I don’t believe you can as the rules are currently written.

Monetary Mentor Reprint

New 21 Apr 2023 Asked by jimharbor 39 Comments

Why was Monetary Mentor reprinted instead of color shifted into red and/or blue. Aren't those the token spam/noncreature/convoke colors in MOM?

Because the output is more of a white effect than a blue or red one.

Blue Mechanics Experimentation

New 08 Apr 2023 Asked by ominisgauntlet-deactivated20231 34 Comments

I've been really enjoying the experimentation in Blue as of late. From "counters matter" to "vigilance + convoke," it's been a blast watching you guys play with mechanics instead of staying with usual themes like spells or mill. Limited has been feeling very fresh, and MOM is looking fun!

Glad you’re enjoying it.

Color Tokens in Convoke

New 07 Apr 2023 Asked by mournfulodysseus 67 Comments

Hi Mark! Are out of colour tokens a problem in a set with convoke? I notice that Ral's reinforcements and Preening Champion in MOM make tokens that are red and blue, which means that either mono-colour deck can cast convoke spells of the other colour. That's obviously not the end of the world as far as the colour pie is concerned, but was it considered a bug or a feature for limited?

It was considered a feature.

Backup Mechanic Colors

New 06 Apr 2023 Asked by ladylockwood92 39 Comments

Hi Maro,I'm loving the previews for March of the Machine, and am especially excited about the Backup mechanic. That being said, I'm a little disappointed that there's only 1 blue creature with backup. I'm sure there's a reason behind this decision, but I can't help but feel like it's a missed opportunity.

We tend to focus mechanics in specific colors to help differentiate how the set feels, so playing different colors will feel different. We are conscious about using abilities in new colors when we bring them back. Convoke in blue and red is a good example.
