Ubiquitous Tokens Expectation

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by gcu-sovereign 4 Comments

Is the Ubiquitous Token of a plane something we should expect from visit to visit? Like, how Capenna has its gw citizens, Innistrad has black decayed zombies, LTR had orc armies [applicable to some silmarillion-based visit, I guess]I was looking at the Fish tokens in Bloomburrow and Mercenaries in otj and wondering if those were also more Worldbuilding statements or not.

It’s a mechanical tool that adds flavor, and something we definitely use when shaping a set.

Plane Locals' Awareness

New 03 Jul 2024 Asked by wherehavealltheuswrnamesgone 37 Comments

Do the denizens of a particular plane know what the plane is called? i.e. Would a citizen of Duskmourn say “boy I sure do hate living here on Duskmorn!”

Some do.

Citizen over Townsfolk Type

New 11 Jun 2024 Asked by jdrawer01 10 Comments

Good morning, Mark! Would you be able to speak on why Citizen was chosen over the retired Townsfolk for when the type was introduced? [I'd ask why it wasn't applied to old Townsfolk like Tragic Poet, but I think you've answered why not enough recently ;)]

I assume it was a bit more general and could be used in more places.

Tokens vs Cards

New 20 May 2024 Asked by banksyguythrowingthings 18 Comments

I'd question the "no flavor difference btwn tokens and cards". To me, most tokens feel like extras in a movie. Some citizens, some goblins, some zombies, even a sea monster. There are exceptions like legendary/named tokens of course (often sidekicks), but in general tokens feel a bit more "generic" than cards. P.s.: I love tokens, this is not an attack on them - just vibes.

I’ve had this conversation with the creative team many times. If a Bear and a token Bear are both in front of you, there’s no way to tell them apart with the naked eye. It’s just two Bears.

Evil Vision Lead

New 01 Apr 2024 Asked by elmarcodepico 57 Comments

Is Evil Mark Rosewater going to show up in Thunder Junction?

He lead the vision design for it. Outlaw was originally going to be a batch for helpful citizens. And commiting a crime was “when you help out an opponent”.

Choosing Set Themes

New 19 Jan 2024 Asked by su92 24 Comments

When you're planning a typal theme for a set, why do you sometimes choose types that are unlikely to see many future cards much less support (Citizens, Detectives) as opposed to more generic ones (Dinosaurs, Faeries)?

It’s a better fit for the set. We do plenty of generic ones.

Citizen vs Soldier Tokens

Why are citizen tokens stronger than soldier tokens?

They aren’t, except when involved in a planet-wide celebration, and then they’re just so excited. : )

Batman's Color Identity

New 01 Dec 2023 Asked by jjustin1379 55 Comments

So batman is not blue? He is the world's greatest detective and often uses intelligence and science. He is red because he is driven by the emotions of grief and he is a viglante. He uses black as a tool and one could argue his very selfish and is only batman to satisfy his own trauma. How is batman white?

Batman is in order white/blue/black.White because his entire reason for becoming Batman was to make a world where what befell him and his parents would never happen to another citizen of Gotham. He’s trying to provide order to stop the rampant spread of criminality in the city. His ultimate goal, like white, is to create peace.

New Capenna's Law

New 30 Nov 2023 Asked by workfromsaklas 74 Comments

Reaching back for this one, but in New Capenna, we had five criminal organizations, but what were they committing crimes against? Was there just no law enforcement at all? No law? A whole bunch of cards that got cut that represented the law? I mean, there are citizens that are obviously running for some sort of office, but what office? In what government.

There is law. We didn’t show a lot of it on cards.

Naming Lazav Discount

New 03 Nov 2023 Asked by donalton 68 Comments

Hey mark, question about Vorthos naming shenanigans: If I name Lazav, am I allowed to discount every card that depicts a Ravnican citizen? Since we can't actually prove that any of those cards aren't Lazav in disguise, I think we should stay safe and assume that they are all Lazav, and therefore, give me the discount.

The card has definitively be Lazav, not potentially be Lazav.

Multicolored Tokens

New 12 Sep 2023 Asked by cursedereaper 45 Comments

Hey Mark I lately revisted some decks I planned in the past looking at the old Ravnica Legends that grant one effect for color A and one for color B.
And looking at Lyzolda I realized there are hardly any rakdos colored tokens that reappear. Spirits, Faeries, Elves and Birds occasionally appear in two colors and sometimes not. And then there are tokens like Citizens who are always multicolor.I understand e.g. Rats in Eldrain feel better as mono black but why are multicolored tokens so rare. I really liked the two colored tokens of Strixhaven (Savra loves those little pests).Question: What metrics do you use to decide when a token should be multicolored and when to make them mono colored?

Our rule is that tokens are monocolor by default. We will make them multicolored if it is either relevant mechanically or has a strong creative reason.

White's Typal Dominance

New 16 Jul 2023 Asked by vaaste111 34 Comments

Why does white tend to be the 'Typal colour' in nearly every set? We've had Citizens, Spirits, Humans, Halflings, Soldiers, Knights and Pyrexians in the last few years?

Thematically, white is the most about groups working together, and it most often has go-wide themes in limited.

Non-Phyrexian Praetor Query

New 16 Nov 2022 Asked by lizardwizard100 68 Comments

Hey Mark, I noticed that there are two non-phyrexian creatures that have the “Praetor” subtype: “Ebon Praetor” and “Sanguine Praetor” (both of which have the supertype “Avatar”). Could you please explain why these exist, as I was under the impression that “Praetor” is a Phyrexian-exclusive subtype? To me it feels very out-of-place… sort of like seeing a “Creature — Eldrazi Citizen”…!

Praetor is an English word. It’s not exclusive to Phyrexians.

Alliteration Interpretations

New 24 Sep 2022 Asked by neotrup 24 Comments

Should the reminder text of Treacherous Trapezist be treated as hard rules for alliteration, or just as a basic reminder? For example, Civil Servant would generally be considered alliterative while Citizen's Crowbar would not, despite the explanation in the reminder text.

It depends how rules compliant your play group is. If you were playing with me, I’d allow true alliteration as well as what the Trapezist defines, but technically it doesn’t follow the rules of the card.

Vorthos and Multiple Identities

New 21 Sep 2022 Asked by towel-guy 29 Comments

does tittles count for vorthos? is the raven man a Lim dul card for example? and reincarnations?and more importantly if I play lazav does vorthos see every ravnica citizen as him? or only Chandra in particular?

You’re naming a character, so if they have multiple names, they all count. (SPOILER) Naming Lim Dul does get you The Raven Man.Lazav only counts as someone else if it’s a story point on the card where he was imitating them. You can’t just pick any character and go, “it might be Lazav, who knows?”

Deciding Tribal Mechanics

New 15 Jun 2022 Asked by wildcardgamez 39 Comments

How do you decide what creature types get tribal mechanics? There are quite a few creature types with tribal mechanics that are common like humans and I'd love more love for less common ones like what you guys did for citizens in Capenna and horrors in the CL2 Precon.

It’s a combination of what works for the world, what we know there’s interest in, and what’s supplementing other mechanical themes (in and out of the set).

Tribal Support in New Capena

New 23 Apr 2022 Asked by cle-guy 27 Comments

Does New Capena have a lowe than usual amount of tribal support?

There are five cards that mechanically care about Citizens. That’s about roughly average for a set without creature type themes as a larger component. Those sets usually have one creature type they care about.
