Bloodrush Versus Channel

New 23 Nov 2021 Asked by berryjon-patternrecognition 46 Comments

Mark, I was doing some research and I noticed that the Bloodrush and Channel abilities are exactly the same. Yet, you rate one as a 6 on the Storm scale and the other as a 7. Why the difference? And can you share any insight as to how the latter got renamed to the former with the RtR block?

Bloodrush is a subset of Channel.

Mark! Where are bloodrush and mill each on the storm scale

Blood rush is probably a 6. Mill is a 1.

Reflection on Kamigawa Ideas

New 03 May 2020 Asked by pyrpleknyght 75 Comments

I'm actually surprised you think Kamigawa was mostly poor ideas. I feel like it's been piecemeal vindicated over time as its mechanics and themes are brought back with slight tweaks. Dominaria showed that a legend focused set was a cool idea, Innistrad the fun of cards that could transform, channel was narrowed for bloodrush, etc. I obviously don't have access to the market research you do, but it's always seemed to me that the sets biggest weakness was its comparative power level in standard

A legendary focus was a bad idea at the time. We now live in a time where Commander is popular and there’s an upside for legendary. Odyssey had done threshold years before, so two stage cards had already been done. Channel, was a bit overly broad, but I’ll agree it played well. A Japanese top-down design was probably the coolest idea, but the choice to design the creative first and then design the mechanics afterwards was horribly flawed.

Adventure vs. Mechanics

So would you say adventure works almost like bloodrush or kicker?

It’s more like cycling in that it’s an alternate ability that can be used from the hand.

Bloodrush Origins

Hey Mark! My Birthday is the 13th, and is as wondering if you could tell me anything about one of my favorite mechanics, Bloodrush? Thank you!

Bloodrush came about because we were looking for a surprise combat mechanic we could put on creatures.Happy Birthday!

Werewolf Strategy Tension

New 01 Apr 2016 Asked by siamkor 29 Comments

Why is the Wolf / Werewolf theme in SOI playing combat tricks when playing Werewolves also means you shouldn't be playing too many spells? Isn't it a bit anti-synergistic? If I were to use pumping effects in a Werewolf deck, I think things like Kessig's Wolf Run and bloodrush cards would be safer.

Because Werewolves and Wolves have a combat based strategy and having combat interaction makes them more dynamic. Yes, there’s some tension, but tension isn’t always bad.

Mechanics Space Issue

New 06 Dec 2015 Asked by viseling 19 Comments

"The set had problem fitting ten mechanics (plus Fuse) into the set. Why would having twenty instead help?"... Its possible that I totally misunderstand the design constraints involved here, but wouldn't it save space if (for example) rather than needing to introduce a new scavenge creature AND a new bloodrush creature, if you could instead introduce a single (green) critter with both bloodrush and scavenge?

It would save space at the cost of complexity and creative confusion so not an overall gain designwise.

Mechanic Power Levels

New 02 Oct 2014 Asked by zwomally 25 Comments

I understand Development is responsible for dictating power level. What bothers me, however, are the mechanics that are intentionally underpowered. Populate, for example, is nowhere near Bloodrush - but I personally find populate more fun.

Any mechanic can be priced to be powerful or weak.

Card Purposes

New 03 Jul 2014 Asked by whyther-deactivated20151018 22 Comments

Wild Beastmaster was a scavenge enabler? I thought it was one of those cards in RTR that was secretly placed to be incredibly playable with Gatecrash (specifically Bloodrush)?

It also did that. Cards can have multiple purposes.

RTR Mechanics Return

Do you guys see using again the mechanics from RTR block? Such as Bloodrush, Evolve, Unleash etc?

I am pretty certain some of those mechanics we’ll be used again.

Guild Mechanics Mix

New 24 May 2014 Asked by relentlessasrats-blog 27 Comments

I was personally very disappointed we didn't see a card with both scavenge and bloodrush in RTR block (and detain + overload to a lesser extent). Here's hoping they'll come together at some point.

We tend not to cross the streams when doing guilds. Who exactly is using the key spell of two different guilds? We already have ten factions to follow.

Understanding Evoke Misplays

New 02 Apr 2014 Asked by lazcarno 12 Comments

"The biggest problem [with Evoke] is that it can be used before the mana cost says it can. That makes a lot of people misplay it." Do you mean that people would wait until they have 5 mana available before evoking Glarewielder for 1R? Or, for Bloodrush, wait until they have 6 mana before bloodrushing Rubblehulk for 1RG? If so, I find that hard to believe. If not, I don't know what you mean.

Some players glance at a card’s mana cost and don’t process it until they can cast it even of there is an ability in the text box that would let them play it sooner.
