Completing Cycles

New 29 Jan 2024 Asked by vedalkensamurai 50 Comments

Would you complete a mega-mega-cycle even if it was started unintentionally? I'm waiting for the green version of Charming Prince, Callous Bloodmage, Aether Channeler, and Charming Scoundrel.

It depends on how much players believe it’s a cycle.

Power Creep Concerns

New 21 Dec 2022 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 42 Comments

History has shown players like powerful things and lower powered sets or sets that appear lower powered have weaker player appeal responses and purchase patterns. Does this mean that powercreep is inevitable and at some future date Moxes will be made obsolete? Especially in an eternal world can player expectations be met without bringing the game full circle with everyone having Black Lotus Channel Fireball as their deck?

We’ve been making Magic for almost thirty years, and power creep has not overtaken the game, so I think we have a handle on it.

Channel the Suns Query

New 24 Jun 2021 Asked by thatguyovertherewiththething 38 Comments

Is Channel the Suns a break for green?

No. Green tends to do more permanent mana, but it can get the occasional temporary mana.

Magic and Cats

New 28 Nov 2019 Asked by bardakus 28 Comments

Hey Mark, on the very latest episode on the youtube channel Extra Credits (a really good channel about game design) the narrator makes a joke about playing magic with his cat to pass the time until next week's episode

Cool!

Storm Scale Ratings

Hey, just a question for the Storm Scale: Why aren't there ratings for Channel, Sweep, [Noun] offering, and Soulshift?

Not everything has been put on the scale yet.

Channel Card Discussion

New 26 Oct 2019 Asked by usernamesarehard17 37 Comments

Hi Mark. If you were to print a card like channel, ie pay life get mana, would it still be mono green or black-green.

I don’t think we’d make it for play design reasons, but it’s in black’s color pie.

Eldrazi Media Mention

New 08 Oct 2019 Asked by tropicalscream 60 Comments

Here's an MtG reference in Media: The YouTube channel "Top 5 Scary Videos" had a video if "Top 5 Scariest Cosmic Horror Monsters (in media) and The Eldrazi were listed at # 5 and talked on how cool/creepy they are!

Cool. Thanks for sharing.

FYI, the entire stream (including all the cookie-making goodness) is archived on the Magic Twitch channel.

A good FYI.

Introducing New Players

New 04 Sep 2019 Asked by strix-soven 50 Comments

I'm not mad at you and I'm sorry if it came off wrong. Frustration sometimes comes to you because you're the only 2-way channel of communication we have to WotC, but we all appreciate that you're willing to talk with us. The one of mine you responded to was a P.S. (due to character limit) to the main one, in which I detail from experience how the optics of a highly expensive game make our job of bringing our wary friends to the hobby extremely hard (Even if ultra-casual can be played cheaply).

I think when introducing someone to Magic, I would start with formats that are easier to make decks for. It’s intimidating to start a game with “and now select from this list of 20,000 cards”.

Set Balance Philosophy

New 05 Aug 2019 Asked by strix-soven 40 Comments

Re: "We’re not going to unbalance current Magic to make up for early imbalances in the color pie." I respect your answer. At the same time, I wonder wouldn't Battlebond/Conspiracy/similar be a channel to balance older formats while only adding those cards to the formats that have old blue imbalances, thus preserving "current" Modern and Standard?

We design each set to be balanced unto itself. Players, for example, should be able to enjoy Battlebond without having to have it interact with other components.

Tierzoo References

New 31 Jul 2019 Asked by orgydrills 67 Comments

tierzoo, a very popular educational youtube channel that discusses zoology in the form of a competitive metagame analysis, constantly makes references to Magic abilities like deathtouch, lifelink, and reach

Cool.

Correction: Extra Turns

New 28 Jul 2019 Asked by quietlark-blog 24 Comments

Correction: Jimmy and Josh from the Command Zone Youtube channel have "Extra Turns", not "Extra Moves"

Oops. “Extra Turns”.

Proliferate Text Update

New 31 Mar 2019 Asked by lmtrk 40 Comments

The Proliferate reminder text on Flux Channeler doesn't match the current rules, with regards to when something has more than one kind of counter. Are the rules changing?

It was slightly tweaked.

Innistrad Sister Trivia

New 28 Jan 2019 Asked by flusterfluff 43 Comments

Gavin Verhey made an appearance on a rather popular youtube channel recently to answer various questions, and something got said about the fourth Innistrad sister being a potential include for a Commander product in the next couple years. My birthday was yesterday, so I was wondering if you had any trivia related to her.

She was created by a man named Ken Troop (he write the story she first was referenced in) who is one of the directors in Magic R&D.

Inside R & D Fate

New 29 Nov 2018 Asked by stealthrock12-blog 35 Comments

I know you're not in charge of it but whatever happened to Inside R & D?

I’m not sure. I did record two half hour interviews with different R&D members as a pilot for a new show idea I had (tentatively called “R&D Tales”). They were streamed on Black Friday on the Magic Twitch channel. One was with Erik Lauer and the other Andrew Veen. Both were about Guilds of Ravnica design. Did any of you see it?

White's Commander Performance

New 03 Nov 2018 Asked by cheekyseraph 133 Comments

According to the Command Zone youtube channel, White is the weakest color and it actually contributes towards people losing games. Would you agree with their findings? Do you think white needs more support?

We are actively working right now on the Council of Colors to find some solutions for white in Commander. The goal is to find new space that plays into what white is as a color, not to just let it do things that we purposely don’t let it do.

Praise for Arena

New 17 Oct 2018 Asked by gabecampos89 52 Comments

I feel like the community does a much better job of criticizing you guys then it is at praising your work. I've done this myself on this channel quite a bit. Here goes really well deserved praise though: i absolutely love arena. It has become one of my favorite ways to play Magic. I've been drafting almost everyday because of it, and actually experiencing standard after a very long time of just Cmdr play. It really is everything i wanted, an accessible way to play more Magic.

I’m happy to hear that. : )

Channel Fireball is selling the product on line to be picked up at certain foreign Grand Prix.

Magic Media Reference

New 22 May 2018 Asked by svstrauser 26 Comments

Regarding Magic in the media, it looks like there is someone in the Brazilian Youtube channel Porta dos Fundos who really likes Magic, because here is another reference: in one of their videos, called Meia (Half), at the end of the video (1:36, to be precise), someone gives an Island to the cinema cashier, in order to pay half to see the movie (a regular practice for students in Brazil). =)
