Classes Subtype Return

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by haru-n-harkel 29 Comments

Mark, is the returning noncreature subtype Classes? Because if so, they *did* technically return once, we got Artificer Class in Baldur's Gate as a one-off.

It was. I forgot that one card.

Artifact and Commander Scenario

If/When an artifact with the "Relentless" text so that Mishra, Artificer Prodigy can work normally in a Commander game?

I assume when.

Card Design Flavor

New 16 Jan 2024 Asked by enigmaticchromatic 71 Comments

I have a few questions about this. Was there some sort of game of telephone or something here? This card has nothing to do with artifacts but is an artificer, it deals with instants and sorceries like a wizard, and it sac creatures and has menace like black. It seems obvious to me this card should have a been a BR wizard or even a R wizard. The only blue thing seems to be Ward 2? I get that blue cares about instants and sorceries but not in any capacity that isn't covered by red here

The thing you’re missing is the Izzet flavor which ties to both the artificer flavor and the connection to instants and sorceries.

Commander Design Choices

New 29 May 2023 Asked by jirachibi2550 25 Comments

Why are Gimbal and Urza Chief Artificer? Both precon face commanders close to each other, and both make a 0/0 token that gets better the more artifacts you have, give artifacts a keyword, etc. Gimbal just seems like a worse version of Urza, which I don't mind at all, but them being so close to each other in release is what's weird to me.

Gimbal is all about playing as many different artifact tokens as possible. That’s a different goal than Urza.

Stocking Tiger Origin

New 25 Dec 2022 Asked by ursadub 33 Comments

In your head canon, why would an artificer make a stocking tiger? 🙂

For the holidays. : )

Urza Commander Wish

New 10 Nov 2022 Asked by karric 30 Comments

I'm still holding out hope for an Urza parallel to Mishra, Artificer Prodigy. Could you pass that along to the Commander team?

Not every Urza or Mishra card needs to be a parallel design, but I’ll pass along your desire.

Urza's Ceremonial Garment

New 28 Oct 2022 Asked by loreleywrites 43 Comments

To explain, the miter is one of the ceremonial garments of the Lord High Artificer of Argive and Urza does indeed don it in the novel. It doesn't last long, however, as the jewels sewn into it are powerstones. It's implied that it is disassembled to aid the war effort.

Balancing Class and Creature Types

New 21 Jul 2022 Asked by feyd-ruin 50 Comments

While I understand the complexities that prevented the artificers in Aether Revolt from having the creature type Rebels, doesn’t Frontline Rebel violate the “card names with a class name should have that class” guideline? How do you balance this, especially looking at the possibilities for reprinting such a card where the nuance of why it’s not a rebel may be lost?

I think it should have been a Rebel. That said, monitoring creature types can get pretty complex. They are the one part of the card that regularly has mechanical and creative ramifications.

Food Artifacts and Artificers

New 28 Apr 2022 Asked by lil-cheez 31 Comments

Hiya Mark! If foods are artifacts, shouldn't cookers (Asmora, Gyome) be artificers?

No, much like planting clues or digging up treasure don’t either. Artifacts can affect a wide range of things as they’re the card type used to represent objects. Artificers specifically work with more traditional artifacts (what one might call “artifacts” in the real world).

Designing Cards for EDH

New 04 Feb 2022 Asked by mysterio797 51 Comments

Hello Mark, when you guys make a card that is broken in EDH is it planned? (Example: Containment Construct pairs w/Artificer’s Intuition and Lion’s Eye Diamond)

I think “broken” is a high bar, especially in an eternal format. We have lots of designers that think about Commander, but there are a *lot* of potential card interactions, so sometimes.

Fun Facts about Mishra

New 10 Jan 2022 Asked by jackakim1 48 Comments

Hi I turned 18 yesterday, could I have some trivia for my favorite Legend Mishra, Artificer Prodigy?

When we were designing Time Spiral, and we realized we could pull legendary creatures from the past, we had everyone on the design team make a list of what characters we should do. We then compiled all the lists and the number one response was Mishra.Happy 18th Birthday!

Enchantress vs Artificers Set Analysis

New 22 Aug 2021 Asked by lucksfrd 37 Comments

I think the problem with a Enchantress vs artificers set is that that the colors that usually make good artificier (blue and red) don't interact well with enchantments. Maybe this is a set that white could play a central role.

Colors can lean towards sides without completely being on that side. For instance, 80% of blue can be one side A and 20% on side B.

Concept of Artificers World

New 21 Aug 2021 Asked by nutsofoden 110 Comments

I like the idea of a world focused around Artificers with artifact creatures VS Enchanters with enchantment creatures fighting a war to control the Plane. That sounds like a fun world to me.

I agree.

Reality of Artificer Class card

New 14 Jul 2021 Asked by sheebslysheebs 42 Comments

I think some people are having issues with the reasoning behind leaving out Artificer as a Class card not because it doesn't make sense, but because it feels weird to set up a rule that only the -core- 5e classes would be included when that only excludes one official class, even if it's a reasonable rule to have. Having said that, since they are a thing in MtG as well, any chance for an Artificer Class card in a supplemental product?

There is a chance, yes.

Omitted Artificer Class in AFR

New 13 Jul 2021 Asked by haru-n-harkel 43 Comments

Hey Mark, i was wondering why Artificer Class got left out of AFR. there are artificers in set (a legendary one even!) and Tasha's Cauldron officially introduced artificers to the forgotten realms setting as opposed to just eberron. I guess I'm just sad my favorite class got omitted from the set.

I believe they did the twelve main classes from D&D Fifth Edition.

Artificer Class Enchantment Possibility

New 03 Jul 2021 Asked by massivelybreakfast 31 Comments

Was there any talk about making an Artificer Class Enchantment in design? Any chance we'll see it in a future set?

I believe we stuck to the the main D&D fifth edition classes.

Hanna, of the Weatherlight crew, was Barron’s daughter. He wanted her to be a great wizard, but she instead became an artificer, much to his disappointment. Happy Birthday to your daughter!

About Artificer Creature Type

New 17 Nov 2020 Asked by darksteelartificer 37 Comments

For my birthday trivia, I would like to know something about the artificer creature type. Please and thank you.

Creatures interacting with artifacts goes back to Antiquities (and Alpha had ones that were the products of specific people), but the creature type didn’t get created until Datksteel during the first visit to the plane of Mirrodin.Happy Birthday!
