Trivia on Ghave and Birthday

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by penguinsandpalmtrees 2 Comments

I would like to invoke the power of birthday trivia! I am turning 30 this year and would like to know if you remember any trivia about Ghave, Guru of Spores from the first official commander precons!

Or alternatively, of my favorite pair of Magic characters, Gisa and Geralf.

Thanks, and have a great summer!
Give the story team high fives from me.

When we originally designed Innistrad, we were tickled by the idea that blue and black created different kinds of Zombies. Blue built them out of parts, ala Frankenstein, where black was more about necromancy. To capture this distinction, we made two characters, brother and sister, that represent each type of Zombie making, and made their core conflict about which is better.Happy 30th Birthday!

Ludevic's Color Allocation Query

New 06 Sep 2021 Asked by blind42-blog 59 Comments

Why isn't black in Ludevic, Necro-Alchemist's mana cost? Wouldn't someone who specializes in reanimating corpses through technology (ala Dr. Frankenstein) arguably be a form of necromancy? Can a necromancer be non-black?

He’s more stitcher than necromancer. Dr. Frankenstein is very blue.

Cross-College Classes at Strixhaven

New 25 Mar 2021 Asked by deeran-moo 52 Comments

Hi mark, I'm now SO keen for Strixhaven and as an artist I feel so seen with Prismari. My question for today if it's something you may know, can I still take some extra curricular lessons in necromancy over at Witherbloom?

Just like any university, you can take classes at other colleges. The students at that college just have priority to the classes.

Reanimation Mechanic Limits

New 27 Nov 2019 Asked by goku332 43 Comments

Can Animate Dead and Necromancy effects return? I think they're a nice middle ground for strong reanimate effects with decent drawbacks. It would also allow all the colors to be able to deal with said creature or enchantment to get rid of it. If that is definitively a no go, could we get stronger reanimate effects in supplemental products?

If reanimation gets too strong it prevents us from making powerful, higher cost creatures.

Blue Zombies Justification

New 02 Jun 2019 Asked by neognosticism 74 Comments

What’s the color pie reasoning behind zombies being blue?

Blue zombies are Frankenstein-like experiments created by combining dead body parts together and bringing it to “life”. This is in contrast to the necromancy of black.

Bant's Society Traits

New 26 Mar 2019 Asked by vanasbry 53 Comments

Hey Mark, I'm just learning about Alara. Aside from being a "perfect kingdom of sunshine", what quirks did Bant get from lacking black and red mana? Did the residents of Bant live exceptionally long lives (like 200 years)? Was there a cycle of reincarnation? Bant just seems so normal in contrast with how Esper and Grixis substituted the new life of green with technology and necromancy respectively.

Bant is a world focused on the community, where individuals are thought secondary to the group.

Necromancy Enchantment Explanation

New 30 Dec 2018 Asked by tomasaki19 18 Comments

In a previous ask you said Necromancy was a global enchantment, but it's not. I'm curious what it was you originally had meant to say about the cycle of enchantments in that block?

I was being a bit technical. It’s a global enchantment that turns into a local one (aka an aura).

Necromancy Trivia and Reprint

New 30 Dec 2018 Asked by orzhovguildmage 34 Comments

Today is my birthday! Can I put in a good word for Necromancy? I'd like to see it reprinted some time, but I understand the textbox for it is a little complicated. It's my favorite card and I'd really love the opportunity to get a foil copy. If not, could I get some trivia on Necromancy?

Necromancy is based on a mechanic (enchantments that can be cast as if they have flash, but are destroyed at end of turn) cycled in Mirage, but uncycled in Visions. The Mirage ones were all creature auras, but some of the Visions ones, like Nectomancy, are global enchantments.Happy Birthday!

Planeswalker Color Themes

New 12 Jun 2017 Asked by goldgaridelve 69 Comments

Am I remembering right that reaction to Liliana of the Dark Realms is what helped WOTC realize that they needed to keep planeswalkers in a narrow theme of their color pie? If so, is "Swamps Matter" still Liliana or open to another black planeswalker?

Liliana is all about necromancy and “swamps matter” can be done by a different planeswalker of black magic.

White Zombies in Innistrad

New 24 Apr 2017 Asked by shukkets 33 Comments

Can we get white Zombies in the next Innistrad block? After seeing the undead being the most effective means of fighting off Eldrazi and the populace most likely not trusting angels after all that craziness, you'd think the general attitude on necromancy would shift to positive.

I wouldn’t hold your breath for that change.

Liliana's Necromancy

New 05 Jul 2016 Asked by popcornbunni 51 Comments

Is Liliana moving away from reanimation? Her new + kills things, her - gets things to your hand, and her ultimate makes tokens.

Her thing is necromancy. Making zombies flavorwise is similar to reanimation.

White's Resurrection Mechanic

New 26 Jun 2016 Asked by calibur-death 39 Comments

Can't necromancy be mono-white, just with different reasons and exact methods? there are a lot of mono-white reanimation cards.

White doesn’t have reanimation. It has resurrection. : ) But yes, mono-White can bring the dead back to life.

Color Opposition

New 05 Aug 2015 Asked by magickalshenanigans 29 Comments

Maybe I'm misunderstanding both colors, but if green is concerned with the natural order and black relies heavily on necromancy and undead things, both of which flout that natural order, wouldn't those two colors be opposed to each other, too?

Black and Green are opposed to one another.

Blue Zombies Explained

New 04 Jul 2015 Asked by whatami543-deactivated20230712 64 Comments

What's the flavor reasoning behind blue zombies?

On Innistrad, they are creatures, like Frankenstein, that are the product of laboratories rather than necromancy.

Necromancy Ethics

Could a monoBlack mage object to or dislike necromancy?

Sure.

Liliana's Focus Shift

New 23 May 2014 Asked by ghallberg 34 Comments

What does Lilliana becoming more focused on necromancy actually mean in terms of mechanics, will she no longer be discarding cards, killing creatures etc?

Both discarding and killing are useful if you raise the dead. : )

Liliana's Necromancy

New 04 May 2014 Asked by mkfffe 38 Comments

I'm a big fan of Liliana. I love necromancers. Which part of Liliana of the Drak Realms was her necromancy or was this something different in her personality we haven't seen before?

Liliana if the Dark Realms is considered a mistake because it doesn’t match her powers as a character. It was that card that got us to map out the flavor and connected mechanics of each planeswalker to prevent a repeat of that mistake.

Necromancy Diversity Request

New 28 Nov 2013 Asked by x9ss 48 Comments

As huge fan of zombies/skeletons and the color black, any chance we could get some more cards like Skithiryx? IE: Undead versions of other big creatures like sphinxes, leviathans, dragons, etc? Equal-opportunity necromancy! Not just for humanoids!

I’m all for zombies of cool creatures.

Enchant Dead Flavour

New 01 Dec 2012 Asked by throatwolfe 2 Comments

I have always liked the way the flavor of Animate Dead (and its cousins like Necromancy) played out: you could kill the creature again, but also destroy the enchantment to break the spell. For a long time this ability has been on sorceries instead. I assume this is because of rules and issues, the same reason Animate Dead has such terrible Oracle text. Is there any way the flavor of the old enchantments could return without a rules or wording nightmare?

“Enchant dead thing” just has a lot of rules baggage. For what it’s worth I love Animate Dead.

Spell Subtypes

New 31 Aug 2012 Asked by dshirle7 6 Comments

If given the chance back when Magic started, would you have allowed instants and sorceries to have their own types, maybe by element (Fire, Lightning, Water) or by class (Evocation, Abjuration, Necromancy)?

I would have probably found some way to subtype them like creatures. Well, maybe.
