Amonket Flamingo Request and Birthday

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by littlethingwithfeathers 4 Comments

Hello Mark! I would like to invoke the rite of Birthday Trivia (a day late) with a request for Amonket, since I was an Ancient Egyptian Mythology kid growing up.

I'd also like to make an animal request... my partners' favorite animals (a duck and ferret respectively) have appeared on cards (Decoy Duck playtest card and Joven's Ferrets), but my favorite animal, the noble flamingo, has to make do with only a sticker as far as I can tell. Can there be a card with a flamingo someday? Even just a reprint of "Uncage the Menagerie" or similar? Or a variety of Aven?

Thank you for all the work you do for us, both on the cards themselves and demystifying and discussing the hobby.

Amonket and a flamingo, got it. They probably won’t be in the same set. : )Happy Birthday!

Common Legend Rarity

"Also, Homelands which came out in 1995 had two common legendary creatures (Chandler and Joven), so I wouldn't call this a new thing. "It certainly isn't a new thing. The issue is more of a frequency thing, so I suppose the better phrase would be that common legendaries aren't very.....common :D

They are not. : )

Legendary Common Critique

extremely disappointed to see a legendary creature at common in mh3, i hope that mistake is never made again. introducing legendary creatures to pauper would severely compromise part of the formats identity to me

Magic is ever-evolving. Just because something hasn’t been done before doesn’t mean it never should. Also, Homelands which came out in 1995 had two common legendary creatures (Chandler and Joven), so I wouldn’t call this a new thing.

Prismatic Piper Rarity

"You mean, Chandler or Joven?" You made The Prismatic Piper cry, Mark.

He’s not technically common, as he shows up at a rarity more common than common. He does have a common rarity symbol (as we didn’t know what else to give him), so it’s a gray area.

You mean, Chandler or Joven? It’s so hard to choose. : )

Homelands' Legendary Commons

"When has any set had legendary commons?" Homelands! :)

Ah, Chandler and Joven. Yeah, I don’t think we’re doing that again.

When or If - the return of Joven, Chandler, and Eron the Relentless?

If. They are all dead and not horribly popular.

Joven's Ferrets Trivia

New 23 Sep 2019 Asked by orca-iguana 43 Comments

It is my dad's birthday tomorrow, and as he is the one who got me into magic, I was wondering if you had any trivia on his favorite card, Joven's Ferrets?

Joven’s Ferrets is a referencec to one of Homelands’ designers, Kyle Namvar. I think Joven was a nickname and he owned a ferret. Happy Birthday to your dad!

Fate of Joven's Ferrets

Have we seen the last of Joven's Ferrets?

It’s doing things no longer in green’s slice of the pie, so odds are low.

Common Legends Rarity

New 09 Apr 2017 Asked by misteryada 38 Comments

"We’ve never done legendaries at common and infrequently at uncommon." Chandler and Joven from Homelands were common legends.

They were what we call C1’s which meant they appeared only once in the common sheet unlike the real commons that appeared four or more times. C1’s are considered uncommons from a rarity standpoint.

Homelands Power Level

New 30 Oct 2015 Asked by palaguin 30 Comments

Flashback: Just got my first Homelands packs. Are you afraid this set is too powerful? I mean, Ihsan's Sahde and Joven's Ferrets seem broken.

1995 Mark: I’m a developer and I can say that Homelands is not going to break Type 2 any time soon.

How many cards are named and/or look like people from Wizards?

Maro = me. : ) Jaeymdae Tome = J.M.D. = J. Michael Davis (R&D) Jalum Tome = J.L.M. = Joel L. Mick (R&D, Brand) Emissi Tome = M.S.E. = Michael S. Elliott (R&D) Mons’s Goblin Raiders = Mons Johnson (R&D) Rysorian Badger = Rhias Hall (Organized Play) Joven’s Ferret = Kylve Namvar (Customer Service, Homelands designer) Uncle Istvan = Steve Bishop (Organized Play) Rubinia Soulsinger = Carol Monahan (Sales) That’s the ones off the top of my head.

Joven Character Origins

New 17 Dec 2013 Asked by koboldbard-deactivated20200312 9 Comments

What's the deal with Joven, Chandler, and Joven's Ferrets? Who are they really?

Joven, I believe, was Kyle Namvar, one if the designers of Homelands. I know he had a pet ferret. I don’t know if Chandler was based on anyone.

Homelands Return Unlikely

New 14 Jun 2013 Asked by jeanlucncoelho 25 Comments

Screw kamigawa and dominara! You should make the "home to homelands" block with the return of banding, phasing and rampage and a storyline involving the adventures of Chandler and Joven!

The chance of Return to Homelands is far lower than Return to Kamigawa.
