If/When: more vanilla creatures?

When. We do less of them, but they’re not gone.

Misinterpretation of Card Costs

New 15 Jul 2024 Asked by theuninvitedghost 1 Comments

“The biggest problem is that we have to cost cards with whole mana symbols (other than Un-sets, we don’t do ½) and many abilities simply aren’t worth a whole mana by themselves.” Did you miss-read this Question Mark’s question about vanilla creatures as French vanilla?

I didn’t misread it. They were asking why card #A, a vanilla creature, and Card #B, a creature with the same stats but with rules text cost the same. The answer is the rules text usually isn’t worth a full mana, so removing it doesn’t make the creature one cheaper.

Challenges with Vanilla Stats

New 15 Jul 2024 Asked by magicruinssandwich 2 Comments

As a Jasmine player, I was wondering, are we ever going to get more vanilla creatures printed better statlines than creatures with effects ?

The biggest problem is that we have to cost cards with whole mana symbols (other than Un-sets, we don’t do ½) and many abilities simply aren’t worth a whole mana by themselves.

Balancing Complexity in Game

New 14 Jul 2024 Asked by shasonex 2 Comments

you said you moved away from pingers to reduce complexity of combat, but there have also been more complex creatures and no vanilla creatures for X years. how can you rationalize reducing complexity in one way while drastically increasing it in another?

All complexity is not the same.

French Vanilla as Set Theme

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by andalon-historian 6 Comments

Could *french* vanilla work as a set theme?

Probably not. It has many of the same problems as trying to build a vanilla set. If you don’t draw the cards that care, the set is overly simplistic.

Tarmogoyf as French Vanilla

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by aalgot 1 Comments

To be French vanilla, you have to have no rules text other than keyword abilities, so Tarmogoyf is not French vanilla. But it’s mechanicaly identical to a card with no abilities and the stat line “the number of card types among cards in all graveyards/the number of card types among cards in all graveyards” which would technically be vanilla science it only has stats.

Only having stats is not the same as not having rules text. 2/2 is just simpler than */*.

Categorizing Tarmogoyf's Abilities

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by secretgiant 12 Comments

Would Tarmogoyf be considered vanilla because it has no abilities, french vanilla because it's power and toughness are defined in the text of the card (albeit not by an ability), or neither because complexity or any other reason?

To be vanilla you have to have no rules text (not no abilities), so Tarmogoys if not vanilla. To be French vanilla, you have to have no rules text other than keyword abilities, so Tarmogoyf is not French vanilla.

Exiled Boggart Trivia

New 14 May 2024 Asked by seldusvelothren 10 Comments

Hi Mark, it's my (belated) birthday. Can I have a trivia on Exiled Boggart?

Exiled Bogart (from Lorwyn) was made at a time where a 1B 2/2 had to come with a drawback. We finally made a vanilla 1B 2/2 (Walking Corpse) in Innistrad after a lot of discussion. Happy Birthday!

Flavor Text on Lands

New 09 Apr 2024 Asked by argentium-echo 107 Comments

Hey Mark! Is there a chance we could get flavor text on basic lands in premier sets? I used to love Vanilla creatures BECAUSE they had flavor text instead of abilities, it helped flesh out the world but we're seeing less of them nowadays so itd be nice if basics could take that role since non-full art ones typically lack rules text of any kind

We tested this and players strongly preferred the basic lands with just the large mana symbol. That doesn’t mean we’ll never do other types. Dungeons & Dragon sets have flavor text on basic land. The set just needs a strong reason.

Requests for Blue Bears

New 30 Mar 2024 Asked by stormtide-leviathan 28 Comments

If blue is getting bears now, can I request that room for a vanilla one is found somewhere? I know we don't get a lot of vanillas these days, but it would still be nice

Blue getting a 1U 2/2 rare with upside doesn’t mean it gets a vanilla 1U 2/2 at common.

Creature Powercreep

New 28 Mar 2024 Asked by big-golyat 40 Comments

You mentioned that you think of powercreep in Magic as a matter of newer sets being more powerful than older sets. When I think of powercreep in Magic, I tend to think of individual cards being more powerful than older cards. For example, when Savannah Lions was first printed, it was a rare, since having a vanilla 2/1 for 1 mana value with no downside was considered good (I assume). Nowadays, there are seven 2/1s for 1 mana in standard alone, most of them are uncommons, and they all have abilities that aren't downsides. (That list is: Ascendant Packleader, Cheeky House-Mouse, Cult Conscript, Embereth Veteran, Falkenrath Pit Fighter, Hotshot Mechanic, and Recruitment Officer.) Furthermore, Savannah Lion's recent reprint in Dominaria Remastered puts it at a common, meaning that its relative power over Magic's lifetime has seemingly decreased. Is this idea of powercreep something that comes up during your design process, and if so, how does it get addressed?

The power level of creatures in Alpha was pretty weak. There is not, for example, a single Alpha creature we couldn’t reprint today for power level reasons. In contrast, there are a lot of noncreature cards we couldn’t reprint today for power level reasons. We have made a lot of creature cards. Many of them are below the top tier of what we can print. Making a card better than an existing card is not power creep. Making creatures above the top line of what’s acceptable is.

Vanilla Creatures Future

New 06 Mar 2024 Asked by worlds-smallest-epsilon 32 Comments

I just finished reading your Nuts and Bolts article! As someone who mostly plays pauper and draft, I find the discussion of commons very interesting.Do you think it’s fair to say that R&D is moving away from vanilla creatures? With fewer common slots I would assume that there’s not any room to fit them into a set (save for vanilla creatures with a large body, like Yargle and Multani in MOM)

We are moving away from Vanilla creatures as a regular staple. They will exist from time to time, but yes, we’re doing less of them.

Unfun Card Design

New 27 Feb 2024 Asked by 3-slugcat-pilots-7-ornithopters 38 Comments

Have you ever designed a card you didn’t think was fun? Not vanilla or smth, but like actively not fun. Also! Which card that you personally designed do you like playing against the least?

I have made cards that ended up being quite unfun, not on purpose, but mistakes have been made. Rishadan Port comes to mind.

Vanilla Creature Usage

New 28 Jan 2024 Asked by photoshopsnstuff 36 Comments

Are vanilla creatures just dead? The only one we've had since Strixhaven is Yargle and Multani.

They’re not dead, but are being used less frequently.

Disguise vs Morph

New 18 Jan 2024 Asked by phelar 23 Comments

I'm missing something if the definition in the rules of a face down card is changing. Disguise and Morph do the same thing so why use a new keyword?

Face down cards are not definitionally 2/2 vanilla creatures. The thing that puts them face down tells you what they are. For example, Tezzeret, Cruel Machinist makes cards it turns face down 5/5.

Favorite Card Insights

New 14 Dec 2023 Asked by shadowkinggray 42 Comments

Hello Mark. I redeemed my coveted birthday rite several days ago, but it seems to have gotten caught up in the shuffle. I figured I wouldn't submit it on my birthday, which was the 6th, because a lot was going on then in Magic. My query was for any interesting tidbit about my favorite card in the game, Malefic Scythe from M21, and, provided you had nothing about it, instead the card that got me into the game, Errant Ephemeron from Time Spiral. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

When we first designed suspend creatures, we started with familiar vanilla and French vanilla ones. Errant Ephemeron was Air Elemental, and one of the first ones we designed. Happy Belated Birthday!

I don’t know what that means.

Future of Vanilla Creatures

New 01 Dec 2023 Asked by argentium-echo 48 Comments

How likely are we to see actual proper vanilla creatures again? I know we had some in eldraine with adventures but those don't feel vanilla in my opinion

With commons going from 101 to 80 with play boosters, I think it’s even less likely for us to use true vanilla creatures often. There will be plenty of virtual vanilla (creatures that are essentially vanilla for every turn after their first).

Concerns on Power Creep

New 24 Sep 2023 Asked by fogiesthinkblueisop-deactivated 66 Comments

I'm not thrilled at all with the few reveals of the new Xalan set. The power creep is unreal. It seems like it's not even baby steps anymore, but leaps and bounds. The more it creeps, more cards will be completely invalidated and the game will get quicker. Soon, the only thing that will matter is going first. I remember when the "vanilla test" was actually a thing. It felt like a gold standard of evaluating cards, and it worked well. We're long past that. We're getting 7 and 8 mana, 12/12 creatures with insane upside and evasion on the regular now. I wish we could bring back that "vanilla test" standard, but once a stage of power creep has been attained, non-rotating formats can't go back. It'll forever be stained with the negative affects of power creep.

I think you are misjudging the power level of the new cards. Let’s wait and see how they actually impact formats. Also, the game being too quick and seven and eight mana cards being too powerful seem to contradict one another.

Walking Corpse Controversy

New 08 Sep 2023 Asked by thebansheeoflamordia 61 Comments

Mark now you've got us curious, why did Walking Corpse cause so much controvesy?

For many years black couldn’t get a vanilla 2/2 for 1B. Crossing that line sparked a lot of discussion.
