Pinger Creatures in Standard

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by snivy1245 0 Comments

Re: Coruscation Mage: I thought you said R&D don't like pingers in standard?

Pingers that hit creatures. The issue is combat complexity. Hitting the opponent (mostly) doesn’t change combat math.

Sorcery Speed Pingers Implication

New 14 Jul 2024 Asked by marcantoniosavelli 2 Comments

Would sorcery speed pingers solve the problem of too much complexity in combat and allow pingers to be printed in standard?

They don’t change the math much. Yes, it’s different for first strike/double strike.

Balancing Complexity in Game

New 14 Jul 2024 Asked by shasonex 2 Comments

you said you moved away from pingers to reduce complexity of combat, but there have also been more complex creatures and no vanilla creatures for X years. how can you rationalize reducing complexity in one way while drastically increasing it in another?

All complexity is not the same.

Pingers Shift

Why did you move away from pingers?

It greatly increased the math complexity of combat.

Move away from Pingers

Did you move away from pingers in standard legal sets?

Yes, many years ago.

Color Pie References

New 17 Sep 2022 Asked by raytyger 45 Comments

Could we see designs that were color pie breaks as part of multicolor cards that have the original color, as a sort of reference?

Such as a Blue-Red pinger?

That would be doable.

Fight/Bite Mechanic Query

New 12 Aug 2022 Asked by royinversezx 28 Comments

Is one sided fight/bite on green still? Would that make pinger creatures green? Since red doesnt get face pingers anymore

Bite is still green, but pingers have a very different feel than one-shot bite cards.

No Return of Blue Pingers

New 07 Jan 2022 Asked by sigmasonicx 32 Comments

Has there been any desire to give blue pingers again? I recall a Drive to Work about I think M20 where your guest seemed wistful about the days of blue pingers.

There is no desire to do that.

Storm Crow's Limited Play

New 04 Mar 2018 Asked by zuranorbiter 45 Comments

For the record Storm Crow was pretty reasonable in limited in tenth edition because of the low power level and lack of flying. That second toughness was good against pingers too. Not a top pick but playable.

I’ll go out on a limb and say Masters 25 has a higher power level in limited than Tenth Edition. : )

Green Pinger Rarity

New 09 May 2016 Asked by dvoraen 22 Comments

"Green is not getting burn. Green can have one its creatures deal damage to another creature. Green has to have a creature to deal damage." I have to ask. : ) Does this mean green creature-pingers will exist more?! I mean more frequently than Garruk Relentless, and where it's a numerical, not-tied-to-power amount of damage. I'm not saying they should suddenly appear in droves, but in theory would it be an uncommon occurence (rarity joke!) at minimum?

Green will not be getting pingers. Green will occasionally on spells have one-sided fight.

Common Pinger Policies

New 12 Oct 2015 Asked by spadesslick 35 Comments

Back in August, you mentioned that pingers are red flagged at common under NWO. So why is Nettle Drone okay? Not arguing with the decision or anything, just curious.

Red flagged doesn’t mean they can’t exist at common. It means we have to talk about it. Red flagging is just a way to keep things from falling through cracks without discussion.

Pinger Mechanics Inquiry

New 21 Aug 2015 Asked by dalninja121-deactivated20201210 27 Comments

Hi Mark! I'm a drafter that tends to like more complex sets, and I really miss pingers! Are "normal" 3 mana tims in conflict with new world order, or have they fallen out of favor for another reason?

“Tims” (aka creatures that tap to deal 1 damage to target creature or player) are red flagged at common under New World Order as they add a lot of board complexity.

Green's Damage Mechanics

New 25 May 2015 Asked by forcemeat-ghost 21 Comments

If Green can have a creature deal damage to another creature without taking damage back, couldn't Green have pingers? Perhaps it makes more sense if they're "large pingers" dealing 3+ damage?

One shot spells are different than repeatable activations.

Complexity in Sets

New 08 May 2015 Asked by mousegirlpenis 18 Comments

Just finished my first draft of Tempest Remastered and I drafted Shaman-en-kor, Spirit-en-kor and Orim, Samite healer and at one point had a match against two pingers and an on board P/T boosting creature. Let me say I have never appreciated NWO more. But would a more board complexity heavy set be possible in the future?

The pendulum swings but no longer that far in normal expansions. Modern Masters 2015 is complex though.

Colors in Time Travel

New 16 Sep 2014 Asked by kallixti 41 Comments

Since Khans block is a time travel story, will colors be allowed to do things they could do in the past's color pie (blue pingers, black rituals, etc.)?

Tarkir’s past not Magic’s past.

Flickering Mechanic Debate

New 19 May 2014 Asked by ccgnick 21 Comments

Can you defend flickering in White, over Red? As you've said before, doing it first doesn't count, or else we'd be looking at Blue pingers. White doesn't really need flickering mechanically (Up until Avacyn Restored, we hadn't seen flickering in a long time, and White wasn't lacking mechanically), and the flavor of flickering in red ("GO AWAY NOW! Do whatever later, I don't care about that") makes a lot more sense than white's "I teleport you away and then back real quick to dodge a fireball".

White is the color of delay and the one most willing to give things a fresh start.

Red Pingers Logic

New 16 Mar 2014 Asked by thejohnnytimmyspike 22 Comments

<9/12/1995> Mark, can red get creatures that ping in its color pie? This feels more red than blue to me. Maybe I'm crazy, though.

Prodigal Pyromancer is in red.

Mono-Blue Pingers History

New 04 Jan 2014 Asked by slysilverfoxx-deactivated201404 12 Comments

I noticed in the past, mono-blue got pingers or spells that make an opponent lose life... What's the story behind that? And why stop it?

Richard liked the idea of sorcerers that could ping creatures and players with small spells and put then in blue because sorcerers made sense in blue. The problem was direct damage didn’t mechanically make sense in blue so this flavor of card eventually moved to red.

Core Set Staple Changes

New 06 Jul 2012 Asked by quillypen 8 Comments

M13 lacks two regular core set staples: a white tapper and a red pinger! You've mentioned that you want to lessen board complexity--are these types gone for good from the core set, then?

Not gone for good but no longer a “must include”.

Green Pinger Proposal

New 22 Jun 2012 Asked by pfsadfhsafas-blog 17 Comments

How would you feel about an efficient green flying pinger? It would be flavored as a hornet.

Man, I take a lot of abuse on this blog. : )
