Joke Card Dynamics

New 30 Mar 2024 Asked by honor-basquiat 239 Comments

Some thoughts on "Holy Cow":I don't think it's specifically an issue with Holy Cow in a vacuum.Instead, it's more about the massive increase in proliferation of "meme cards" and "joke cards", cards that make references to real life idioms, seek to break the 4th wall in some way, make puns or jokes that pander to everyone, naming cards after a ubiquitous a turn of phrase in pop culture, etc.Sometimes it's cute and whimsical but when it misses, it can feel pretty cringe. I don't want my favorite game to have a bunch of cringe references which becomes a possibility when Magic makes dozens of "joke cards". It also makes the Magic world and universe feel less bespoke and more like a series of existing references.

For what it's worth, I think the Holy Cow reference would have been funnier if it weren't so obvious (i.e. design the card as is with the same art but name it something different).

Years ago, I made this card:
I love puns, so much so that I wove this one into the story (this was the Weatherlight Saga that Michael and I created). Very, very few players got it. (The pun is “squeeze toy”, the squeezable rubber toy that makes noise when you squeeze it, like you would give a dog.) Every time I explain this, I get more people say, “I never got that.”I have nothing against the subtle joke now and then (and there are some pretty subtle jokes in the Un-sets), but I would rather do jokes that the majority of players get. If the trade of is some people roll their eyes and say “that’s not my style of humor”, but many others laugh and enjoy it, I’ll gladly take that. A joke more people get is “funnier” in the aggregate.

Bloomburrow Influences

New 02 Mar 2024 Asked by crabarbeque 52 Comments

Redwall is surely not the only influence on Bloomburrow - but it has to be a huge one, up there with Watership Down. Both of these properties use charming anthropomorphic animals to tell what are extremely dark and heavy stories.Having [1] a human 'main' character in Ral and [2] communicating that Grist does not belong somewhat undermines a possibility I truly was hoping for.Traditionally 'dark' releases like Innistrad and Phyrexia have felt rather jolly in tone/outcomes, respectively... is there ANYTHING dark about Bloomburrow you can share right now?

I can’t get into the story yet, but I can correct an assumption you have. Ral is not the main character. Mabel, the mouse we previewed at MagicCon Chicago is the main character.

Story Integration Feedback

New 26 Mar 2023 Asked by jimhensonreject 64 Comments

I really really enjoy the way that these March of the Machine stories have been going on for twice as long as most other sets. Sets like WAR and MOM are very unique in the way that they integrate the stories and the cards together (extra length stories, preview cards being shown in story order or integrated into the story article itself, etc). I'd argue that they're essential to the reception of the set itself!
You've mentioned before on the blog that it's hard to request more from the creative team because any additional resources focused there need to come from somewhere else. My question is: does the success and reputation of sets where the story is deeply integrated like this fall under "success breeds repetition"? Is there a way the audience can communicate a desire for more intertwined relationships between story and set, even outside of big epic crossover sets?

We do market research on this kind of thing, so players loving it helps.

Confusion Over 'What If' Cards

New 18 Feb 2023 Asked by ne4782 42 Comments

As someone who isn't that into the story but tries to get some of it from the cards, 'What If' cards are deeply confusing. You have to have a deep knowledge of the characters to when they're being subverted. I just assumed I had misunderstood Phyrexian Mana = with Phyrexians on the cards and just lost interest in digging deeper.

As Planar Chaos has taught us, it’s hard to tell when things are different, but not true.

Time Travel in Brothers War

New 01 Dec 2022 Asked by destinyincarnate 50 Comments

Btw, when I heard about the time travel element in brothers war I was upset with the implications. When the story came out, I was extremely glad it was as minimal as it was. And I absolutely loved the story that picked up directly after the Brothers War novel, it seemed very respectful to the tone of the source material.

The plan was always to tell The Brothers War as it happened. The time travel was just a narrative device to “watch it” and tie it into the story.

Parcher in Story

New 20 Aug 2022 Asked by rukakx 29 Comments

Today is my birthday and I wanted to ask were there ever any plans to incorporate Parcher into the story? A Planeswalker someone as eccentric as Urza calls a lunatic sounds like a fascinating character and I’ve wanted to know more about him since the Invasion novel dropped back in my youth.

Not that I know of. Dominaria sets are hard, but the world has so many ties to past stories.Happy Birthday!

Squee's Immortal Nature

New 08 Aug 2022 Asked by charble 84 Comments

I have a question about Squee's inability to die. Did it first emerge from gameplay and then into the story, or from the story into his first card (Squee, Goblin Nabob)? Was it something that was planned for his character from the start?

I guess it’s my fault. When I designed the original card for Squee, his ability to return from the graveyard wasn’t meant to represent he was being reincarnated, just that he was lucky and hard to kill. That card later inspired an author to build his immortality into the character.

Five-Color Card Trivia

New 12 Jul 2022 Asked by trifas 53 Comments

Hi, Mark! Another birthday around here. Could you share any trivia on my first commander, Scion of the Ur-Dragon, or any 5 color card?

The first five-color card, Sliver Queen, came about because we wanted a card that tied all the Slivers together, and they were all five colors, so it seemed fun and splashy to make the Sliver Queen five color. We made her legendary because Michael and I put her into the story. Happy Birthday!

Unpredicted Kamigawa Challenges

New 16 Feb 2022 Asked by green-man-green-suit 82 Comments

This Kamigawa situation is sad because it sends a false message. "You can't make an event on the first trip to a plane because players will think that event IS the plane."The Kami War is over. The world had to move on. And there has to be conflict in the story. Which means one side has to be less represented.Kami vs Mortals again reinforced the falsehood that the war IS the plane.Kami vs New Enemy, Samurai/Ninja get less support.Empire vs New Enemy, Kami get less support.I think the fact that Kami were still integrated into the story/cards at all was excellent. Thank you for fighting so hard for this Mark.

This particular return was filled with all sorts of issues, that being a big one. I’m very happy with how it all ended up. I’m glad you appreciate it.

Multiplayer Themes in Legal Sets

New 04 Nov 2021 Asked by jjustin1379 31 Comments

Surge was a standard legal keyword that talked about multiplayer formats and having partners. Will we see more of these mechanics in standard legal sets?

Oath of the Gatewatch was a special set in that it had multiplayer themes tying into the story of the Gatewatch coming together and forming. It’s not something I expect us to do often and only when there’s a strong narative reason, especially when we have so many other products to do multiplayer cards.

Cards Request

Can I request more cards in the "reverse-domain" mill payoff space?Stuff like Into the Story and the rogues cards in Zendikar Rising.

You mean reverse-threshold?

Absence of Ramaz in Kaldheim

New 19 Dec 2020 Asked by taskmaster-media 39 Comments

I was wondering if there was a reason the Character of Ramaz was not used in this set, as he's associated with Kaldheim.

Not a lot of players have asked to see more Ramaz, and he didn’t naturally fit into the story.

R&D Shifts in Opinion

New 05 Dec 2020 Asked by emeraldninjaiv 46 Comments

In the Tempo Week article you talked about how multiple cards drawn at once was pushed into sorcery speed effects. How did that idea change over time for cards like Into the Story and Return of the Wildspeaker? (Have a lovely day!)

R&D changed their opinion on it over time.

Trivia on Hedrons

New 29 Aug 2020 Asked by phaenyxx 27 Comments

Well my birthday was yesterday, so I'm a bit late, but do you have any trivia on hedrons ? I love mana rocks, and the flavor around the others hedron cards is so awesome...

When creating the world of Zendikar, the hedrons were originally part of giving it a certain feel. Later, when the Eldrazi were added, the hedrons were woven into the story of their imprisonment.Happy Birthday!

Trivia on Legendary Slivers

New 17 Apr 2020 Asked by rwssr 42 Comments

Can I get a birthday trivia factoid about any of the 5 legendary Slivers?

The Sliver Queen was made purely as a mechanical execution. We made her legendary because she felt legendary, so Michael Ryan and I worked her into the story. Happy Birthday!

Slimefoot Trivia Sharing

New 08 Jun 2019 Asked by bidoofvselite-four 39 Comments

Hello Mark! It's my birthday and I was hoping to get trivia on one of my favorite Legendary Creatures, Slimefoot The Stowaway.

I’m not 100% of this, but I think the card started as the black/green build-round for draft (as black/green had a Saproling theme) and the resulting card was so lovable it worked its way into the story.Happy Birthday!

Story Order Praise

New 06 Apr 2019 Asked by algebraicbubbles 44 Comments

I'm loving the story order release of the cars. I was just telling my boyfriend how excited I was that we've only seen two mythic rares and we're a week in! It's great to see how to commons play into the story (also dang are these some great commons). I don't want to hurt your hand, so gentle fist bumps to everyone. You folks have knocked it out of the park.

Thank you for thinking of my sore palms. Fist bumps it shall be.

No, she wasn’t. She didn’t fit into the story.

Set Geography Clarification

New 04 May 2017 Asked by justforaskingmaro 26 Comments

Rath obviously was, but were the two first "visits" from Dominaria, Arabian Nights and Homelands, meant to be different planes back then when published or is it a retcon? I always thought that Arabian Nights was supposed to be, well, Arabian Nights and that Homelands was somewhere in Dominaria.

Homelands was clearly a different plane. It was built into the story. Arabian Nights was much fuzzier.

Origins Style Set

New 28 Apr 2017 Asked by goodfreakh 23 Comments

Is it still possible to make an Origins Styel Standard Legal set with this new push toward one single connected story?

There would be some logistical issues, but story connectivity isn’t one. Magic Origins clearly tied into the story.
