Tarkir's Future & Goblin Archetype

New 21 Jun 2024 Asked by sienna-the-doe 11 Comments

Hey Mark! I was just curious about something very near and dear to my heart, as a Scion of the Ur-Dragon EDH player. will we see any major returns in the future for say, a Tarkir re-boot? also I HAVE to both Thank and Curse your team for the coin flip goblin archetype. it is so so silly and has been a strong archetype for so long

The set codenamed Ultimate is a return to Tarkir.

Scion Naming and Creature Type

New 19 Jun 2024 Asked by duamuteffur 5 Comments

Hi Maro, there are currently ten creatures, whose names contain "Scion of", yet none of them has the Scion creature type. Is there any chance this inconsistency will ever be changed?

The Scion creature type is used for a specific flavor, not anything that could be referred to as a “Scion”.

Eldrazi Precon Deck Compositions

New 08 Jun 2024 Asked by tybonel13 40 Comments

Why does the Eldrazi precon have a mix of Spawn and Scions? I know you can help which is used when it comes to reprints, but it has Chittering Dispatcher as a new card that makes Spawn and Eldrazi Confluence and Spawnbed Protector as new cards that make Scions (the protector is especially annoying, with spawn in its name when it doesn't even make them). I wish it had just kept with the main set and only used Spawn for new cards. They would be a touch weaker but the consistency would be so much nicer.

Making a hundred card deck around the Eldrazi is tricky being how few sets they’ve been in. I don’t think the design team building the deck had the choice to not use both. And once that was a known thing, having new cards do both wasn’t a huge deal.

Eldrazi Spawn vs Scions

New 16 May 2024 Asked by kjjbaa 17 Comments

Do you know why the MH3 design team used Eldrazi spawn instead of scions?

Erik Lauer and I specifically talk about it on my podcast (coming up). Basically, 0/1 had less utility outside the mana production and thus caused less problems.

Rules Around Number of Types

New 01 May 2024 Asked by thunderweb 64 Comments

Can the rule care about the number of types a card or a permanent has?- "The Royal Scions" would have 1 card type(Planeswalker), and 2 planeswalker subtypes(Rowan and Will)- "Go-Shintai of Ancient Wars" would have 1 supertype(Legendary), 2 card types(Enchantment and Creature), 1 enchantment subtype(Shrine), and 0 creature subtypes

Yes.

Planeswalker Card Rule

New 20 Apr 2024 Asked by lookingupanddown 24 Comments

Under the current one-planeswalker-per-set rule, could we ever get something like The Royal Scions where there are multiple characters on one card?

We could. Note the one planeswalker per set rule is the current default. As Outlaws of Thunder Junction shows, we can have more than one.

Dual Legends Planeswalkers

New 08 Apr 2024 Asked by mayoigatari 98 Comments

In March of the Machine we got legendary creature cards with two legends depicted in the art, name and similar abilities that the original legendaries had. Is it unrealistic to see planeswalkers printed the similar way? For example in Throne of eldraine we got The Royal Scions for Will and Rowan. Flavor wise it was one of my favorite cards to play with on Arena just from the voice lines of the two characters bickering with one another.

It’s on the table if there’s a reason to do it.

Character Artwork Gender

New 03 Apr 2024 Asked by lettherebeplastic-blog 50 Comments

Please print Snapcaster mage and scion of oona with female artwork. Thank you!

Due to card titles in certain foreign languages, nowadays we tend to keep the gender the same on reprints.

Artwork Gender Issues

New 22 Dec 2023 Asked by lettherebeplastic-blog 60 Comments

Please reprint Snapcaster mage and scion of oona with female artwork. Thank you so much.

There’s a foreign language issue we have to deal with. Certain languages have gendered elements which differ depending on whether the art portrays a male or female creature. This keeps us (mostly) having new art match the same gender as the original art.

Card Types Ordering

New 07 Jul 2023 Asked by thunderweb 38 Comments

Are there rules on how card types and subtypes are ordered?- Dryad Arbor: "Land Creature" vs "Creature Land"- The Reality Chip: "Equipment Jellyfish" vs "Jellyfish Equipment"- The Royal Scions: "Will Rowan" vs "Rowan Will"

That’s an editing question, but I assume there are rules. I don’t know them. My guess is Rowan and Will’s order was based on the art.

Five-Color Card Trivia

New 12 Jul 2022 Asked by trifas 53 Comments

Hi, Mark! Another birthday around here. Could you share any trivia on my first commander, Scion of the Ur-Dragon, or any 5 color card?

The first five-color card, Sliver Queen, came about because we wanted a card that tied all the Slivers together, and they were all five colors, so it seemed fun and splashy to make the Sliver Queen five color. We made her legendary because Michael and I put her into the story. Happy Birthday!

Special Art for Ur-Dragon

New 08 Jan 2022 Asked by vaatiwithblue-deactivated202403 45 Comments

Today is my birthday! I was wondering if it was possible to get The Ur-Dragon and Scion of the Ur Dragon in a secret lair as full art borderless showcase cards (possibly in Foil)? Would it become a possibility if people asked for it?

I answered you on Twitter, but I’ll repeat the answer here. If enough people express desire, there’s all sorts of things Secret Lair can do.Happy Birthday!

Diversity of Angel Tokens

New 08 Sep 2021 Asked by moonsliceman 65 Comments

RE: Tokens, I meant different kinds of Angel tokens. There's a 4/4 Angel Warrior with flying and vigilance, a 4/4 Angel Warrior with just flying, and an Angel with flying that's 3/3. Alternatively, consider Eldrazi Scions versus Eldrazi Spawns. Yes, there are gameplay needs, but from a Mel's perspective it's a nightmare.

That’s why we make token cards, to avoid this specific problem.

Trivia on Character Karn

New 04 Aug 2021 Asked by thesilvernoble 46 Comments

Hello Mark! My birthday was Sunday, August 1, and I turned 39. (26 years of playing magic now!) My middle name is Karn, and I was wondering if you had any trivia on Karn from your untold weatherlight saga, or if you had any design trivia about my favorite card ever, Karn, Scion of Urza?

Karn was named after the word “cairn”, a heap of stones set up as a monument. During the first year of the Weatherlight Saga, each character was given to a single writer who wrote all their flavor text to give them a voice. I wrote Karn (and Ertai). We included him on the crew because we wanted artifacts represented.Happy Birthday!

Color Aspects in MDFCs

New 27 Mar 2021 Asked by pipebombgf 36 Comments

Hi Mark! If an MDFC is a different color on each side (like the deans and the scions are), could one side have aspects of the other side's color? Like a bit of color philosophy diffusion just by being on the same card?

No, each side of a MDFC has to match the colors of its mana cost.

Multiple Planeswalkers on Cards

New 13 Dec 2020 Asked by otto-von-bensmarck-blog 61 Comments

Can I request more Planeswalker cards like The Royal Scions that depict multiple planeswalkers together? Or was that only done because the twins share a spark?

It requires a strong flavor reason, but it’s not off the table.

Direct Damage Efficacy

New 12 Dec 2019 Asked by birdofablackfeather 56 Comments

"Red gets more direct damage than white gets those kinds of effects. Being secondary from a design sense is more about volume than power." With the way loyalty numbers have been going up, red's spells are becoming worse and worse at killing planeswalkers, though. Fry doesn't even kill Scions, Oko or the new Ashiok, isn't that pretty sad?

The cool thing about direct damage is you can combine it with other damage sources, including other direct damage spells. : )

Gatewatch Planeswalkers Duo

New 14 Nov 2019 Asked by adventmtg 54 Comments

Wrenn and Six and The Royal Scions are two very interesting Planeswalkers! Do you think it's a "when" or an "if" that we'll see two members of the gatewatch on the same planeswalker card?

I’d say more when than if, but we need a good story reason.

Royal Scions Ordering

New 30 Sep 2019 Asked by last-dragonfruit 35 Comments

Why is Will's name listed first on the royal scions card? Isn't Rowan supposed to be the face of the set?

I believe because Will is pictured on the left side of the art.

Wallpaper Request

New 29 Sep 2019 Asked by zendikon-sage 32 Comments

I would like to express my disappointment that the royal scions have not yet received a Wednesday wallpaper treatment. How should I do so?

Here is fine.
