Color Schemes in Character Costumes

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by perfectcollectorduck 7 Comments

Have y'all done testing with non Magic players looking at UB characters with iconic existing color schemes in colors that clash with that scheme - Spiderman in black green to use a dramatic and probably out of pie example - and see if the frames confuse them? Do people pick up on it easily?

A character having a costume/outfit that are Magic colors doesn’t make them those colors within the game, so it doesn’t matter if some non-Magic players take time to understand it. Players grasping the color pie is an important early step in the game.

A creature with infinite power can’t destroy a creature with infinite toughness.

Clash Mechanic Execution

New 03 May 2024 Asked by pontemosca 35 Comments

Hi Mark, I am reading all the cards with Clash. Do you believe part of the problem was the execution? In some cases winning the clash make the card playable, in others winning the clash gives a great bonus, basically and extra card. This seems very different than the payouts of the roll a D20 in AFR, where the bonuses were minor.

The execution did not help the mechanic’s reception.

Showcase Set Ideas

New 08 Apr 2024 Asked by randomette2 35 Comments

" I am interested in feedback if you all like the idea of a showcase set. If the answer is yes, are there other themes you'd like to see?" I would like to see the idea expended on, yeah. Some ideas of showcase themes: -A tournament or competition; -a trapped plane/prison plane that captures people from across the multiverse; -a clash between two or more planes.

There are many ways to do a showcase set. Everyone should remember that when I say a “showcase” set I mean, the set is built around a theme, and then we bring characters, and potential other things like objects, there that fit that larger theme. Next year’s omenpath set is Tennis and it’s a different kind of set, what I’m calling a travelogue set" where there is something that takes place over multiple worlds, in Tennis’ case a race.

Clash Mechanic Consideration

New 31 Mar 2024 Asked by boq-condor002 38 Comments

Was Clash ever considered for Thunder Junction? It’s a mechanic that feels a lot like dueling which is on theme for cowboys.

We did talk about it. The mechanic just isn’t that popular.

Set Roster Decisions

New 26 Mar 2024 Asked by yeckit-blog 60 Comments

Loving things so far but a couple of questions, why weren't Ninjas considered outlaws and was clash considered for this set? The latter seems like it would fit flavor as a standoff with the higher cost being who drew and shot quicker.

Repeated batches, meaning things we use on multiple cards in the same set, are normally restricted between two and five items, with three being the sweet spot. We needed Rogues and Warlocks to hit all the creative executions we wanted. Mercenary was needed because that was our henchperson token. We also knew Assassin’s Creed with its Assassin typal theme was coming. We turned those four in when we handed off from vision, leaving one potential space open so set design could add something if needed. That something was Pirate due to all the ones added by The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. As I show in today’s article, we considered all the following:AssassinBarbarianBerserkerMinionMercenaryNinjaPirateRebelRogueWarlockThere just wasn’t room for all of them. Also, we prioritized what would be in the set. So some things, like Ninja, didn’t make the cut.As for clash, it’s just wasn’t popular enough when we first did it to bring it back.

Clash Reception Analysis

New 08 Mar 2024 Asked by eternalcheechako 28 Comments

Any idea why clash was poorly received? i like luck mechanics that are upside when i get lucky, and neutral when i am unlucky... and fixing my draws was a bonus.

My best guess is it felt too random.

Clash Mechanic Consideration

Was Clash on the table for Thunder Junction? Or perhaps some "Fixed" version of Clash? Seems a flavor slam dunk to evoke quickdraw duels to me

Clash just wasn’t that well received by the players.

Clash Mechanic Reversal

Have you ever considered doing a version of clash, a new keyword, where the lower mana value matters?

That sounds worse, and Clash was already a low-ranked mechanic.

Mechanic Cameos in Sets

New 04 Feb 2024 Asked by spyrohawk 35 Comments

I keep thinking about the one-off use of Battle Cry in MOM. Is this a sign that we may get more keyword mechanics returning as one-offs (also like Clash on Marvo, Deep Operative)? New mechanics are obviously great because everyone loves new content, but I also think bringing back old mechanics helps enforce the idea that they are still a part of the game, and not something just done once and then forgotten about.

We’re calling them cameos. We’re allowing one-of callbacks (in limited amount) at high rarities.

Clash Mechanic Appreciation

New 25 Jan 2024 Asked by lostinsus 30 Comments

I know not many people like Clash, but I'm personally a big fan and hope to see more it. Could you please pass thanks to the designers of "Marvo, Deep Operative" for bringing it back?

Will do.

Clash Commander Design

New 25 Jan 2024 Asked by guardmanxl 32 Comments

Hi Mark. I love the design of Marvo, Deep Operative, but I am curious the reasoning behind making a Clash matters commander when Clash is a very unpopular mechanic that seems unlikely to see new cards made with it.

Sometimes we make cards to make a narrow band of players very happy.

New Capenna Law

With more time to prepare, do you think a return to New Capenna could benefit from introducing some form of law enforcement for the crime families to clash with?

It would probably help.

Older Sets on Arena

New 23 Dec 2023 Asked by kreetn 52 Comments

With tarkir appearing on arena, has there been any consideration for other older sets, such as lorwyn making an appearance? I think arena handling the interaction would make Clash a more fun mechanic as it would speed up the process, and I’d love to have more kindred effects to play with. Kindred is my favorite style of play ❤️ And those sweet, sweet filter lands.

The reason they were able to do Khans of Tarkir was that’s what they coded to test Arena way back in the very beginning. That means it was basically already done, so came with very little coding needs.

Caverns Mechanics Synergy

New 24 Oct 2023 Asked by jimharbor 35 Comments

Caverns of Ixalan has Craft a "Graveyard as a resource" mechanic like Flashback & Scavenge and Descend, a "graveyard as a measure" mechanic like threshold and undergrowth. From what I can tell a graveyard had set has always been built around one or the other because the themes clash. Why does Caverns mix the two? Thanks for answering our questions, sir.

Both mechanics work with things that fill your graveyard, so there is some synergy, even if there’s also some tension.

Clash Variant Concept

New 13 Sep 2023 Asked by marrinara-sauce 27 Comments

Do you think a Clash variant where you win by having the lower mana value could play well?

I think it would feel worse than clash, which wasn’t popular.

Clash Mechanic Insights

New 12 Sep 2023 Asked by faerross 41 Comments

Clash is just a complicated coin flip and getting players interested in coin flips is challenging enough. I'd be surprised if we saw a mechanic remotely close to Clash in the future let alone a straight up reprint.Bonus thought: Clash is a push your luck mechanic; you want to cut as many low drops as possible to increase your odds of winning the Clash. And to keep aggro decks from running over Clash decks, warping your own deck as such needs to be a viable strategy.

(In other words: Clash takes building a deck's mana curve, a challenge for new players to understand, and rewards them for making bad decisions.)

I was really up on Clash when we created it. I was sad at its reception. It was very educational though.

Potential for Clash

New 12 Sep 2023 Asked by greenscene8 44 Comments

Hi Mark, thanks again for doing this blog, its a wonderful read +makes for good days. Question/request- I play a lot of limited, Clash was a mechanic with an extremely "untapped" potential. It came out before Scry. With impactful payoffs it can be a "heart mechanic" for a set. An entire limited set revolving around setting up your best top deck w scry/grave/hand, with fun reveals & then cheating things into play would be a new style of play. Know its a storm 8. Anything like this considered?

Clash is one of the lowest scoring mechanics since we’ve done market research on them. Players mostly didn’t like it, so were apprehensive to bring it back.

Planeswalkers Mechanics Future

New 26 Aug 2023 Asked by thatdude2 22 Comments

Do you think it might be necessary in the future to change planeswalkers mechanically to open new design space since the current one it's very limited? Or it would be too upsetting since it would clash with the older ones and their support cards?

There are no plans to do that.

Galaxy Foil vs. Retro

What are the chances we see galaxy foil retro frame cards?

Don’t those two things kind of clash thematically?
