Kudo's Ability in Color Pie

New 01 May 2024 Asked by bdiasf 18 Comments

Is the Kudo, King Among Bears ability in white's share of the pie? I thought P/T setting was now Blue on the last Mechanical Color Pie update, making Reprobation and Harmonious Archon a bend/break

Green can also do it.

Archon Mechanical Identity

New 14 Mar 2024 Asked by dissociativehusky 17 Comments

When you add a semi-rare creature type to a set as a one-off, how much consideration is put into sharing/building a mechanical identity with past creatures? I ask specifically about my beloved archons who somewhat share a theme but-not-really, though there are others like spiders (besides being GB and having reach) or giants

Usually, a card has a lot of things it needs to do for the set it’s in, so there isn’t a lot of space to necessarily synergize with older cards. That said, if it’s the same shape and size, often times it can lean into a similar mechanical space.

Appreciation for Archon Lore

New 30 Jan 2024 Asked by dissociativehusky 24 Comments

As someone who has asked you for more Archons repeatedly, I appreciate the new legendary Ezrim! High fives to the author, if you can, for unearthing new archon lore!

High fives shall be applied.

Creature Type Consistency

New 10 Jan 2024 Asked by su92 31 Comments

If a Universes Beyond's lore used a certain word that's already a creature type in Magic but doesn't mean the same thing, would you use that word? For example, Starcraft but they're not white a avatars of justice with giant flying mounts. Would they still be Archon creature type?

My best guess is yes, we would use it.

Archon Traits

What is the mechanical identity of the creature type Archon?

The only mechanical constant is flying.

Praise for Saw in Half

New 15 May 2023 Asked by krobat 39 Comments

Hi Mark, I just got to Through the Breach an Archon of Cruelty on my opponent's end step and then Saw in Half it the same step to untap with two of them. Saw in Half is such a cool card, please give my applause to whoever designed it (especially if it's you)!

I think Chris Mooney designed it, but I’m not 100% sure. It wasn’t me.

Monochrome Cruel Ultimatum's Card Function

New 09 Jul 2022 Asked by chocolatechipmarshmallowpizza 24 Comments

Re Cruel Ultimatum being mono-black: Are syphon mind, archon of cruelty and waste not breaks? Drawing off of someone else's discard seems to fit in black's color pie best. And invoke despair draws cards with the opponent paying the cost. Skull raid is a straight draw 2 against an empty handed opponent, so the opponent doesn't even need to lose anything.

We’ve done a few opponent discards and you draw as sort of a “drain cards” effect, but it was a mistake. Black needs to pay some cost to draw. The opponent losing cards is not a cost.

Analysis on Cruel Ultimatum

New 09 Jul 2022 Asked by fromhades 26 Comments

Could Cruel Ultimatum be printed as a mono-black card? I was looking at it the other day and realized black can make people sacrifice creatures, return creatures from GY to hand, drain opponents for life, draw cards, and make opponents discard. The only thing I think is somewhat outside of black's wheelhouse is drawing cards without some additional cost (sacrifice, life, etc.) but it can still sometimes do that if the MV is high (e.g., Archon of Cruelty). Is it Grixis just for Bolas flavor?

The draw three cards is the only part black can’t do. And no, spending more mana doesn’t get you around having to pay an additional cost.

Standard Card Design Request

New 06 Jun 2022 Asked by ajanicomelately 32 Comments

In D2Ws, you more often talk about cards being designed for limited, or for flavor. May I request more info on cards designed for standard? It’s rare for you to talk about cards like Bonecrusher Giant, Archon of Emeria, Ray of Enfeeblement, etc or other “cards-that-become-staples.”

That’s because we don’t do that in vision design. Standard design happens in set design and play design.

Issues with Angel Tokens

New 08 Sep 2021 Asked by shadesofpink 119 Comments

RE: different Angel tokens- there's currently: 4/4 Angel Warrior, 4/4 Angel with Vigilance, 4/4 Angel, and 3/3 Angel. Apart from the 3/3 they all have minor differences that make it extremely difficult to keep track of what kind of Angel you have and from where. The plain 4/4 Angel tokens are also extremely common to come by, so if you're representing your 4/4 Angel Warrior with Vigilance with one of those, then you might not notice the tribal synergies or the additional keyword.

A number of people have complained about the Angel token issue. I will pass along the note to the set design teams to think about how many versions exist at one time, but it’s not as easy to solve as it might appear at first blush. Because sets rotate, the only simple way to keep one Angel creature token in Standard is to lock into one thing and only ever make the Angel creature token that thing (say 4/4 flying) in new sets. What that means though is sets can’t adjust the token for the needs of that set. The Angel couldn’t gain Warrior to work with party, for example. The other fix is to just make more different kinds of tokens, the 3/3 flyer is a Gargoyle, the 4/4 with flying and vigilance is an Archon, for example, but then we get the Angel fans sad that we’re just making a lot less Angels. For people that care about this, would you prefer different creatures types if the stats/abilities are different?

White Card Improvements

New 12 Jan 2020 Asked by petruscaex 54 Comments

Mark, as someone who come here a lot to ask about White I must say that some things made me really happy in Theros Beyond Death. Elspeth Conquers Death was amazing (and I hope to see more of these effects in White cards :) ) and Taranika, Shatter the Sky, the pegasus archon and Heliod were pretty amazing cards. Congratulations to all the team!

We are working on white.

Color Balance Observations

New 04 Dec 2019 Asked by pandemicsmiles 51 Comments

It feels over the past few days like one of the issues might be R&D is willing for some colors to print major bends (Kenrith's Transformation), push boundaries (ETB fights), and outright breaks (Nissa's land-based draws), but has historically not done so for White, which doesn't see its Eternal options grow the same way as a result. Many colors also see strange and weird one-off effects, but we don't see those in White (except I think the Archon in Eldraine).

There was a point in time where green was the color everyone complained about and said was the weakest. The game ebbs and flows. White will have its tine to shine. And yes, it’s something we’re working on.

Theros Enchantment Focus

New 10 Aug 2019 Asked by deathtouchroadrunner 48 Comments

How does return to Theros accomplish "Mirrodin for Enchantments?" Would it be very different than the first Theros visit? To me Theros is enchantment creatures + devotion more than enchantment matters. (Maybe lots of enchantment players dislike enchantments being creatures all the time? Witness how stuff like Ghostly Prison is played tons in all kinds of EDH decks and creatures like Archangel of Tithes or Blazing Archon are played much less.) Maybe Constellation being late in block is part why?

Theros block wasn’t “enchantment matters” until Journey into Nyx, but it existed on the block and could be focused on in a return.

White’s Permanent Removal

New 18 Feb 2017 Asked by deathtouchroadrunner 48 Comments

I always thought white could destroy/exile any kind of permanent given enough mana, color symbols, or other costs/conditions. At the very least it has a lot of effects that are pretty close (Archon of Justice, Mangara of Corondor, Saltblast, Angelic Purge, Karmic Justice, etc.). The flavor's always made sense to me as a high-level judgment that something has gone beyond being safely/effectively imprisoned, particularly if taking care of it requires some self-sacrifice for the sake of society.

White can Oblivion Ring “target permanent” but monowhite isn’t supposed to get “destroy (or exile) target permanent”.

Angels vs Archons

New 05 Apr 2014 Asked by the-sultai-brood-blog 26 Comments

Maybe it's just me, but lately, I have the idea Archons are slowly replacing Angels as the White characteristic race. Am I imagining things?

Angels didn’t work for the workd of Theros. Angels at large are still white’s iconic. They’re not going anywhere.

Four-Color Legends Query

New 25 Jan 2014 Asked by normandean 57 Comments

I've been looking at what creature types currently appear in only four colors, and here's what I've found so far: Un-white: Drone Efreet Lizard Snake Ooze, Un-blue: Boar Berserker Centaur Kavu Samurai Wolf, Un-black: Kithkin Rhino, Un-red: Archon Frog Fungus Hag Ouphe Plant, and Un-green: Dwarf Gargoyle Mercenary Vampire. Obviously Un-black is the tough one here, but any of those get the ol' creative juices flowing as far as four-color legends?

I’m answering mostly to show off your great list. I’m not sure creature type is the thing in the way of more four color creatures.
