Assemble

'Everyone Likes' Principle Insights

New 29 Jun 2024 Asked by gevth 2 Comments

Did you come up with the “if everyone likes your game…” principle? Where does it come from? Any examples of something liked by lots of people that failed?I’d like to know more about it, since I think it’s a principle that applies not just to games, but for a wide assemble of activities.

Future of Contraptions

New 12 Mar 2024 Asked by obazervazi 20 Comments

Reprinting assemble a contraption cards seems fraught, and contraptions aren't likely to end up in standard, but how likely are new assemble cards to show up in a supplemental set?

Sadly, not very likely.

Contraptions and Attractions

If/when “whenever you would assemble a contraption you may open an attraction instead and vice versa”

If. That requires a set with both Contraptions and Attractions, a big ask.

Contraptions' Future

New 22 Oct 2023 Asked by arcanistlupus 20 Comments

I've always wondered about Contraptions - you stated at the time that they weren't given borders with the intent that they would be black-border legal even though there were no black border assemble effects. But at the time dice rolling wasn't black board, and there are a number of contraptions that roll dice. Were you anticipating dice-rolling becoming black border back in Unstable?

I thought it was potentially possible.

Jigsaw Puzzle Boosters

New 01 Apr 2023 Asked by elmarcodepico 21 Comments

I'm really excited for the Booster Fun variant where you get to assemble all of your cards as jigsaw puzzles. High fives to the team!

Each Secret Lair will be a different kind of puzzle. I’m excited for Sudoku Sorceries.

Apocalyptic Set Reveals

“If an asteroid was headed towards Earth, and we were all surely doomed in a couple of months, would you tell us what the next alphabet worth of sets is about?” I would — well if that what’s it’s gonna take then I’m going to assemble a rag tag band of convicts led by Bruce Willis on a mission to make an asteroid hit us! You’re welcome, people of Earth!

If I’m responsible for the Earth getting destroyed, it’s going to reflect badly in my year review. (“Mark has done excellent design work this year, but that was overshadowed by his destruction of all the players.”)Trivia question: What card has a ruling telling you not to destroy the Earth?

Unstable Contraptions Legality

New 10 Jan 2023 Asked by vereendood 34 Comments

Hello Mark, are the unstable contraption black-border legal but there just isn't any card that assemble them in eternal? I recently went through the list and no effect feels acorn, also they don't have borders.

The contraptions are eternal legal I guess as they are not indicated as not legal (no silver border). But yes, no way to get them onto the battlefield is eternal legal.

Contraption Commander Wish

New 06 Nov 2022 Asked by the-machine-orthodoxy 42 Comments

The Most Dangerous Gamer made me really appreciate having a devoted legendary creature that enables attractions. Is it possible to get a devoted contraption legendary creature? My biggest struggle would be asking what color combination it should be. I don't want to be greedy and ask for a 5-color one, but I don't know which color or colors to skip.

If I had Unstable to do again, I’d make a legendary creature that could repeatably assemble Contraptions.

Request for Clowns

New 20 Oct 2022 Asked by thatguyovertherewiththething 41 Comments

Hi Mark,I just got back from my lastest (and sadly last) Unfinity draft at my LGS. I FINALLY GOT TO DRAFT THE CLOWN DECK. 2x Pietra and 2x Assembled Ensemble was just bonkers. To celebrate my success, may I request more Clowns in the future? (I know it's a big ask)

I’ll make them if people let me. : )

Assembled Ensemble Criteria

New 12 Oct 2022 Asked by gaimanotaku 17 Comments

Does a non-creature artifact that has been temporarily enchanted into a creature, or a crewed Vehicle card with itself in its art, qualify as an "artifact creature" for the sake of Assembled Ensemble?

Assembled Ensemble only looks for an artifact creature in the art of a creature when it’s cast. It having the picture of something animated on the battlefield doesn’t make the object in the picture animated.

Request for More Vedalkens

May I humbly send in a request for more legendary vedalkens? I've been trying to assemble a vedalken tribal deck for a while :)

You may. : )

Assembling Contraptions

New 24 Sep 2022 Asked by wertercatt 31 Comments

Resending this since it might have gotten lost:If I open a Unstable with Opening Ceremony during a game of Unfinity Limited, and cast a creature that Assembles a Contraption on that turn, can I Assemble one of the Contraptions from the pack on that turn? Or is that not close enough to Casting to work?

If you assemble an Contraption, you can make a Contraption deck out of the two cards in the booster and randomly draw one.

Unfinity Cards by Rosewater

New 23 Jun 2022 Asked by nicolbolas96 41 Comments

Hi Mark, will there be any card in Unfinity with FT written by you?

There will be many. Of the ones that are already public, I had a hand in writing Assembled Ensemble and Killer Cosplay.

Un Rules Question on Artifacts

New 18 May 2022 Asked by mikecarlucci 36 Comments

Hi Mark! Un Rules question: I know Assembled Ensemble is an Un card but how do you determine what is an artifact creature based on the art alone? Does Disenchant from Tempest count? The artificial sliver depicted in the set would imply that. Thanks!

There’s some common sense needed. In the case of Tempest Disenchant, the card show Hanna using Disenchant on a Sliver and the only one it would make sense on is the Metallic Sliver which is an artifact creature. Also, if you check Metallic Sliver, they look the same.

Keyword Actions in Mechanics

New 08 Apr 2022 Asked by wherehavealltheuswrnamesgone 36 Comments

I’m really tickled my mechanics like connive (such as explore and assemble) where the creature “performs” an action. Do you think we’ll see more of it? Is there a name for it internally?

They’re keyword actions, but that’s more about being a verb than something creatures “do”.

Rules Query about Contraption

New 26 Jan 2022 Asked by lgosvse 25 Comments

Silver-border rules questions! If I use Karn the Great Creator (brings an artifact into my hand from outside the game), can I get a Contraption? If I can, does it stay in my hand (with the wrong card back?), or go straight to the Scrapyard? If it is in my hand, what happens if I then find a way to cheat it into play? Does it go onto a Sprocket, or sit there meaninglessly? And if it doesn't go on a Sprocket, can I put it on a Sprocket with an "Assemble" ability? What about a "Reassemble" ability?

A Contraption trying to go to any zone other than the battlefield, instead goes to the scrapyard.

Contraptions in Legacy Tournament

New 10 Dec 2021 Asked by wiggin91 43 Comments

Is there a rule somewhere, that makes contraptions not legal in black border play, or can I *technicaly* bring a contraption deck to a legacy tournament (even though I would obviously have not ways to assemble them)?

The Contraptions themselves are not silver border, but every way to get them into the game is, so I’m not sure bringing a Contraption deck to a legacy game means anything.

Eternal Legality of Contraptions

New 09 Dec 2021 Asked by thasgar 31 Comments

If contraption-assembling cards were eternal, would contraptions be eternal, too?

Yes. Contraptions were never silver border. If you could assemble them, you could play them. The problem was every card that assembled them was silver border.

Contraptions and Riggers Rotation

New 26 Jul 2021 Asked by the-machine-orthodoxy 16 Comments

I ask about contraptions rotating because being designed for standard tends to limit the power of riggers and contraptions, but if contraptions automatically rotate riggers don't have to specify a subset of contraptions and can allow other formats to grab a wider range of contraptions in black border.

As I said before, we have the design technology to have new assembling cards only assemble a new subset of contraptions if we desire.

Dungeon and Contraption Immunity

New 25 Jul 2021 Asked by the-machine-orthodoxy 59 Comments

Is it a game rule that all dungeons and all contraptions are immune to rotations? Can R&D change that so players can only use the most recently printed dungeons and contraptions?

Later cards could search for a subset if we wanted. For example, let’s say we return to Kaladesh and wanted to do Contraptions. We could “assemble Kaladeshian contraptions” which would only allow you to use a new subset. The old cards could assemble either since it doesn’t reference a subset.
