About Ravnica Set Innovations

New 24 Apr 2024 Asked by questingbridge 27 Comments

In your lessons learned episode for GRN and RNA you mentioned you had some new ideas for how to shake up a Ravnica set, but you kept things more familiar because War of the Spark was on the horizon. Were some of these ideas used in MKM? If/When we see these ideas on a future visit to Ravnica?

No, my ideas were for a guild Ravnica set with Murders at Karlov Manor wasn’t.

Debt counters. Too bad we didn’t print it. : (

Staying on Planes

New 14 Mar 2024 Asked by strixheaven 29 Comments

Hi Mark. One of the concerns I have had for future sets is that there aren't any sets that take place on the same plane i.e. a plane that takes place over multiple sets. This makes it feel like the planes don't get enough time to be fleshed out and that it feels too much like we're jumping back and forth between planes too quickly. Is this a common concern or do most people prefer the variety of moving between a lot of different settings?

The message that we got loud and clear during the block era was that players generally don’t like staying on the same plane. We do on occasion though stay on the same plane for two or more sets (Guilds of Ravnica/Ravnica Allegiance/War of the Spark, Innistrad: Midnight Hunt/Innistrad: Crimson Vow, Dominaria United/The Brother’s War).

All-Colors Card Info

New 11 Mar 2024 Asked by davidemsa 39 Comments

Re the person asking for a keyword meaning ""this object is all colors". While it's not a keyword, 3 cards like that exist. Transguild Courier from Dissension, Sphinx of the Guildpact from Ravnica Allegiance and Fallaji Wayfarer from the Painbow Dominaria United Commander deck.

Judith's Creature Type

New 05 Feb 2024 Asked by interrogatemarcusii 34 Comments

With the type now being available, why was the new Judith made a Shaman and not a Warlock?

I assume it was done to match her creature type from her Ravnica Allegiance card. As a general rule of thumb, we try to keep legendary creature’s creature type the same if there isn’t a story reason for a change.

MKM Planning Period

New 04 Feb 2024 Asked by mrskayathefrog 27 Comments

I've been really enjoying MKM so far- my LGS even had a little murder mystery of their own to solve during prerelease! I have a question though: were you already planning MKM during Ravnica Allegiance? So many of the clues reference cards from that set!

We were not. We didn’t even know the murder mystery set was on Ravnica until about halfway through vision design.

MKM Set Appreciation

New 21 Jan 2024 Asked by strymon 72 Comments

I’m really liking how MKM is being handled as a Ravnica backdrop set. I feel you guys did a great job of setting expectations this time around. If going into spoiler season I was expecting a true multicolor set, I’d be disappointed with the multicolor presence. Instead, I’m pleasantly surprised. This was a great way to return to Ravnica. It feels like Ravnica, but it feels fresh. I love Ravnica, but it was beginning to feel stale during GRN/RNA. This makes me look forward to future backdrop sets.

Happy to hear that.

Orzhov Trivia

New 19 Nov 2023 Asked by west-scholar 80 Comments

Hi Mark! I'd like to use my birthday trivia please! I first got into the game obsessed with the Orzhov color pair, can I get some trivia either about the guild or the color pairing itself?

One of my all time favorite mechanics that didn’t see print was in Orzhov. For Ravnica Allegiance, we created a mechanic for Orzhov called debt counters. You could give debt counters to a person, either as a punishment or as an extra cost to get better things. Then at the end of the turn, you could spend mana (I think it was 2) to get rid of each debt counter, but if you had any remaining, you lost 1 life. The mechanic was super-flavorful, and played well, but it didn’t interlink with the other guild mechanics as is needed in a faction set, so we changed it. I hope to find a home for it some day.Happy Birthday!

Set Design Evolution

New 04 Nov 2023 Asked by megaquestionsformark 43 Comments

Can you give another example besides LCI of a set vision design handed over that ended up radically different once set design was done?

Guilds of Ravnica and Ravnica Allegiance changed a lot from the mechanics handed off from vision design. Adventures in the Forgotten Realms also went through a lot of changes in set design.

Multicolored Environment Mix

New 30 Apr 2023 Asked by thunderweb 39 Comments

When you make a multicolored environment (such as Strixhaven or New Capenna), can it be a mix of allies/arcs and enemies/wedges? (such as 3 ally pairs and 2 enemy pairs, or 2 arcs and 3 wedges)(It would be like Guilds of Ravnica or Ravnica Allegiance, except it is just one set with no complementary pair.)

While it’s a possibility, the aesthetics make it tricky to do without having another set do the rest.

Theros Gods and Ravnica Guilds

New 09 Jul 2022 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 44 Comments

So is there a way under the new set release a set with all 15 Theros gods or all 10 Ravnica guilds or does this now mean we will never get to have them all together again? Since sets are not drafted together even staying on the same plane still really breaks up these rather integral parts of these planes identities. And also does this mean we will never see any more sets with a full 5 mono and/or 10 dual color sets ever again?

Guilds of Ravnica and Ravnica Allegiance were part of the newest set model, so it is possible to do. We can have consecutive sets be on the same world if there is a reason to do so. That said, there are things we routinely did in blocks (mostly larger cycles) that are trickier to do under the current system.

Possible Riot Mechanic Modification

New 24 Mar 2022 Asked by lilyfin 32 Comments

If Riot, the gruul mechanic from Ravnica Allegiance, was made today, would the choice be between a +1/+1 counter and a haste counter?

I’m not sure the haste counter would add much as it seldom matters beyond the first turn.

Reflections on Kamigawa's Shift

New 05 Feb 2022 Asked by ancient-chaos 58 Comments

Hey Mark,As a huge fan of original Kamigawa block, I have really mixed feelings about NEO. The story, aesthetic, and mechanics - all of the individual components, in a vacuum, are all really cool. But it doesn't feel like a Kamigawa set. It feels so focused on the tech vs tradition theme that a big part of what makes Kamigawa, the kami, got tossed to the side or just left to be references peppering the set. To me, this is like releasing just War of the Spark, without GRN and RNA before it, and calling that a return to Ravnica.

I get that people interpret what Kamigawa means to them differently, so if this feels less Kamigawa to you, I get it. The reason there’s less of a Kami feel is that the main storyline is different. The original trip was about a war between the humans and the spirits. As such, the Kami played a larger role. This time, the story isn’t focused on that, so the Kami exist at a lower level.

Set Changes Between Hand-Off and Print

Hi Mark. Are you ever surprised when you see a Magic set in it's final form? Which set changed the most between your hand-off and print?

Sets can through all sorts of changes. Ravnica Allegiance, for example, had none of the mechanics handed off from vision design.

Three Color Signpost in Drafting

New 08 Nov 2021 Asked by guardmanxl 31 Comments

For five faction two-colored sets like Strixhaven and Ravnica Allegiance has there been any thought about including wedge/shard three color signpost uncommons for those who are drafting the three color decks in those formats?

Two-color cards go in both the two-color decks and the three-color decks. Three-color cards go just in the three-color decks, so we have to be careful using them when three-color is the secondary draft archetypes.

About Similarity between Quandrix and Simic

New 16 Aug 2021 Asked by arcanistlupus 30 Comments

Regarding your State of Design: I disagree that Quandrix was seen as too similar to Similar. I think it was seen as too similar to Ramp, which has been the dominant UG archetype in Standard ever since Hydroid Krasis was printed in Ravnica Allegiance (despite a ridiculous number of bannings). I think you achieved "feels different from Simic", but failed to achieve "feels new and different".

Our goal was different from Simic. Early in vision design we experimented with all five factions being a departure from what the color pair has ever done and it was too much of a departure. Players need familiar hand holds in any new set, so we can’t just change everything.

Mechanic Variance in Set Design

New 12 Dec 2020 Asked by lookingupanddown 34 Comments

On average, how many new mechanics get tossed out of a set in between exploratory design and the tail end of Play Design's run with the set?

It depends on the set. Kaladesh found most of its mechanics in exploratory design. Ravnica Allegiance had them all come from set design. Sets can go through a lot of mechanics when it takes a while to find the right thing.
