Future of Fateseal Mechanic

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by dlight98 9 Comments

I know it's unlikely, but will the Fateseal keyword ever come back? I thought it was an interesting mechanic, even if it's limited to one sliver card for now.

We tried it in a set years ago. It is a pretty unfun mechanic.

Possibility of Slivers Return

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by drflashbang 3 Comments

Hi Mark, I just wanted to say that I’ve really been enjoying all the recent magic content. After not being someone who thought they’d like UB I’ve really enjoyed the LOTR and Assassin’s Creed sets and Bloomburrow might be my favorite plane now! That all being said, I’ve been trying to get a friend of mine back into magic after he took a hiatus for school and I know he’s a big Sliver fan and would instantly come back to the game if they were to present themselves again. I know you wouldn’t be able to share much, but is there anything about slivers in the pipeline so I can try to re-engage him?

I can’t talk about the future, but we are aware of the popularity of Slivers.

Miku Secret Lair Bonus Cards

New 08 Jun 2024 Asked by hyralc 121 Comments

I just got my Miku secret lair and generally I'm very happy with it; it looks gorgeous. However, I must comment frustration that there's two separate bonus cards, with a difference of rarity it seems, no less. It sucks that 'oh actually there's another Miku card you don't get without going to the secondary market which will absolutely ratchet up the price." This feels different to the more generic bonus cards like the slivers which weren't attached to any one secret lair

Two questions: (for everyone to answer) 1) Do you prefer the bonus to be connected to the Secret Lair theme or separate? 2) Do you like the ability to occasionally get rarer bonus cards, or would you prefer all of them get the same thing?

Sapience Requirement for Gaining Sparks

New 03 Mar 2022 Asked by hitek1208 31 Comments

You said it's possible to get a spark, but I thought only sentient things could get a spark. Are slivers sentiment enough, or would one have to gain enough sentience to then gain a spark (and then go through the process of igniting it). I know karn had a "talk" with the queen back in the weatherlight saga, so maybe...

The Sliver Queen was for sure sapient, so Slivers are capable of sapience. I’m not sure if the drones are less so though.

Anthem Effects Rarity Changes

New 10 Mar 2020 Asked by situmonsennyou 28 Comments

I could swear that an article about complexity and rarity from a few years ago explained that anthem/lord effects don't get printed at common, apart from special cases like Slivers. However, in the last two sets we've seen Fortifying Provisions (a common enchantment with "creatures you control get +0/+1") followed by Nylea's Forerunner (a common creature with "other creatures you control have trample"). Has the rule about anthems at common been rethought or am I imagining that it ever existed?

They normally don’t. There are rare exceptions like I said in the article. Nothing has fundamentally changed.

Karn Misunderstanding

Isn't Karn a silver planeswalker?

The request was a Sliver planeswalker.

5-Color Design Trivia

New 15 Jan 2017 Asked by combatdonut 43 Comments

Mark, it's my birthday! And this is my first ask on blogatog. Could I get some trivia on 5-color design?

The first five-color card I was ever associated with was Sliver Queen in Stronghold. We wanted to make a Sliver lord and Slivers were all five colors, so making her five-colored seemed like the only right choice. I worked her into the story and she and Karn had a touching scene (she was guarding the Legacy and Karn talked her into letting him have it).Happy Birthday!

Karn and The Legacy

New 09 Jun 2016 Asked by aleriacarventus 25 Comments

Hey Mark, it's my boyfriend's birthday today! He asked for trivia on either Slivers or on The Legacy. He also wanted to say he's a big fan of Drive to Work :)

Karn was the keeper of the Legacy as well as protector of Gerard. Happy Birthday to your boyfriend!

Sliver Queen Trivia

New 12 Sep 2015 Asked by fatcatlikespudding 30 Comments

It's my birthday today (my second here on blogatog!) Is there any trivia on my favorite card, Aether Vial? If not how about Sliver Queen?

Here’s a trivia question. What Weatherlight crew member interacts in the story with the Sliver Queen?Karn. She’s guarding the Legacy artifacts. Karn convinces her that the Legacy artifacts are to him what the slivers are to her and she lets him take them.Happy Birthday!

Sliver Queen's Intelligence

New 08 Nov 2014 Asked by dude1818 40 Comments

The Sliver Queen was definitely intelligent, since she negotiated with Karn. The rest is the hive probably isn't, since they don't need to be.

The Sliver Queen is definitely proof that at least some of the slivers are sapient.

Player Expectations

New 07 Aug 2014 Asked by idesama 37 Comments

You often talk about how going against player expectations (unless meeting them would somehow hurt the game or make it less fun) is a mistake, a recent example being no five-color Sliver lord in M14. To that point, I would say that development made the right call on Nicol Bolas's ultimate...taking over a turn would have been cool, but would have disappointed tons of players who were expecting some tie with the original card.

Nicol Bolas is a puppetmaster. Controlling other people is what he does.  When we printed Karn, Liberated and he didn’t animate artifacts like his legendary creature card, no one wrote me a letter complaining. Player expectations are not always what you might think they are.

Hive Stirrings Query

New 08 Jul 2013 Asked by designdevelopmentpodcast-blog 4 Comments

M14 looks great- I do have a couple questions about Hive Stirrings though- why did it go into White, (as all colours are capable of token creation) and why are the created tokens colourless? A white card making colourless tokens feels a little strange.

White is currently #1 at token making with green #2 and black #3. The reason it makes colorless sliver tokens is in keeping with the past. All three previous sliver token makers (Brood Sliver, Sliver Queen and Sliversmith) made colorless tokens.

Reserved List Policies

New 25 Oct 2012 Asked by eternalcheechako 6 Comments

As far as I can tell, every time you guys have nudged a toe past the reserved list line, you have caught flak, retreated, apologized and promised to behave. What makes sliver queen and karn different? Note that I am happy to see them, but am curious.

Giant-sized cards are specifically in the reserved list called out as not being included.
