Dark Ascension

Gaming Joy Shared

New 26 May 2024 Asked by snarkatr0n 4 Comments

Happy birthday, Mark! I got into Magic with New Phyrexia's Intro deck, but Dark Ascension was the first new set I was around for. I remember for our first few games my brother thought Llanowar Elves searched the deck for a forest each turn. You can imagine I lost more often than not. Dimir is still my favourite color combo from that. Now I'm lucky enough to play magic with my partner of 9 years (today's our anniversary) and two of my dnd friends, and it's been a constant in my life

Black Cat Trivia

New 10 May 2024 Asked by bluewizardsainur 33 Comments

In honor of my cat passing away, do you have any trivia on black cats in magic?

The card Black Cat was one of the first cards we designed for original Innistrad, but we pushed it back to Dark Ascension as it was a better fit there. Condolences on your cat.

Support for Werewolf Decks

New 27 Aug 2023 Asked by b4ym4n 76 Comments

In my last post, a lot of people were confused about the intent of my post. I apologize for being redundant but here goes...If one builds a werewolf deck, they are forced to play with the same cards (that aren't very good) for three years. Meanwhile, vampires get cards in every set. Some are even legendary. 6 legendary in VOW, werewolves got zero btw. There have been multiple sets the past two years where wolves and werewolves exists on that plane. Dominaria. Eldraine. MOM. Yet, they get nothing. What is the point of making Midnight Hunt/Vow if the tribe would not be supported even by an extra card or two during standard rotation? (Especially after the blunders in dark ascension and eldritch moon, you would think treating them better would be a priority). Wicked Wolf, Nightpack ambusher, werewolf packleader...these cards exist...outside of innistrad. There is literally no excuse to not throw in a single card for this tribe every once in a while. So again, if someone builds a werewolf deck and receives no new cards that help them, what do you say to them playing the same weak cards for three years straight?

I understand when you are focused on a single theme that it’s frustrating because there are many potential opportunities for us to make cards. From our perspective though, there are a lot of themes in Standard. We try to hit upon as many as we can, but it’s just hard to hit them all. Werewolves are particularly tricky as we usually make them double-faced.

Return to Ravnica Trivia

New 03 Jul 2023 Asked by gollumni 26 Comments

Dear Mark,I would like to invoke the rite of Birthday Trivia! (even if it was yesterday and I forgot) I’d love to know more about Return to Ravnica, as it was the set that I started playing magic in. Thank you I’m advance for your consideration

Return to Ravnica was the first large set where the design was led by Ken Nagle. I felt a return would be a good first opportunity, and moved things around, so Ken could lead it. This allowed me to do a winter set for the first time (Dark Ascension).Happy Birthday!

Devign Mistake Clarified

New 22 May 2023 Asked by flakmaniak 24 Comments

In your newest article it says in the Dark Ascension section "For the last two months of design, we had this period called "design" where we would get feedback from the development team, and it allowed us to make changes to accommodate their issues.", where I assume you meant "devign".

Yeah, it’s devign. I think my copywriter thought I mispelled design.

Bonus Sheets Oversight

New 01 Jan 2023 Asked by legacy-rise 23 Comments

In your recent podcast episode on bonus sheets, I think you missed an important one: the DFC sheet in original Innistrad (and Dark Ascension). Of particular significance, it's an example of a post-Time-Spiral-block bonus sheet which both contains original cards and is considered a part of the main set, in contrast to the all-reprint supplemental-set sheets used more recently e.g. in The Brothers' War.

We consider double-faced sheets to be a different thing than bonus sheets, but with a different definition, it could be. That’s why I didn’t include it.That said, I did miss one in the podcast. Modern Horizons 2 has a bonus sheet.

Innistrad's 4-Card Cycles

New 08 Oct 2021 Asked by horobod 35 Comments

Are there 4-card cycles in original Innistrad or were they removed when Humans became Green/White?

Original Innistrad always had five allied-colored tribal factions. Dark Ascension did have four tribal lords of just the monsters.

About Daybound and Nightbound Mechanic

New 16 Sep 2021 Asked by ironeyes52 63 Comments

Daybound/Nightbound is a very clean way to do the old werewolf mechanic, and I think it'll play better. Does it change the power level significantly? I have an INN/DKA cube with a lot of the old werewolves in it, and I'm considering a "house eratta" to have them all work as Daybound/Nightbound. Do you think doing that would unbalance the archetypes?

I think a house errata would be fine.

Trivia about Dark Ascension

New 26 Aug 2021 Asked by havensglow-reblogs 90 Comments

Yesterday was my birthday! Can I get some trivia about my favorite set, Dark Ascension?

I’ve led forty something sets and the only small winter set I ever led was Dark Ascension. I did it because I want Ken Nagle to lead his first large set and a return to a known world (Ravnica) seemed like the right spot. My favorite design story from the set was I was trying to find a cool monster mechanic and was talking with my wife about it, venting my frustration. I really wanted to use persist because monsters have a whole trope of coming back after you think they’re dead, but the set used +1/+1 counters instead of -1/-1 counters. My wife said, “Why can’t you use +1/+1 counters?” And I’m like, “I can!” and undying was born.Happy Birthday!

Sagas vs. Curses

New 14 Dec 2019 Asked by tanknspank 42 Comments

Does this mean Sagas are the non-evergreen mechanic with the shortest time from first appearance to second?

No, Curses were in Dark Ascension (January 2012) and showed up next in Commander 2013 (November 2013).

Green Zombie Rarity

New 03 Apr 2019 Asked by fuckyeahtumblo 56 Comments

Green only has one zombie, Ghoultree from Dark Ascension, is that because green is closely connected to nature and creatures being alive?

Yes.

Call to the Kindred Analysis

New 30 Nov 2018 Asked by glintfang-nezumi 33 Comments

Is Call to the Kindred from dark ascension a pie break or bend?

It’s a pretty serious bend. That card is really a green card.

Collector Numbers Protocol

New 07 Jun 2018 Asked by gaelan 40 Comments

At what point to collector numbers get "locked in"?

They really don’t anymore as the collector numbers are now assigned by a script that’s run when the set is handed off. I just liked the restriction for the live Design Challenge (and technically, it worked that way back when we made Dark Ascension).

Pride in Dominaria

New 28 Apr 2018 Asked by forsoothmydude-deactivated20230 31 Comments

Hi Mark! As someone who came to magic in Dark Ascension, I never got to experience Dominaria but this new set I feel like I too get to return to this familiar place with a sense of nostalgia. Top notch! Can you please share with us the card or mechanic you are most proud of from this set?

Historic is the mechanic that I poured the most sweat into. I’m also super proud about how Sagas turned out.

My best guess is Dark Ascension.

Green Zombies Mention

New 01 Jul 2017 Asked by wantstotendbar-blog 44 Comments

FYI: Ghoultree from Dark Ascension is a Green Zombie. Also Slitherhead is a zombie that can be cast with only green mana, as it costs hybrid black/green

Tribal Synergies Concern

New 14 Jun 2017 Asked by patbou73-blog 60 Comments

I'm worried the "no-blocks" environment will produce less tribal synergies... Innistrad's werewolves needed a 3rd set to become serious business (with Wolfir Avenger ; Dark Ascension's Huntmaster of the Fells, Immerwolf, Scorned Villager and Wolfbitten Captive weren't enough). And M14 Slivers were unplayable until a year later, with M15's release (with Diffusion, Leeching and Venom Slivers). Recently, Zombies and Humans only became competitive with Amonkhet (SOI and EMN were not enough).

The key is being more conscious of the overlap between creature types in sets. Also, we will sometimes be on worlds for more than one set.

Green Card Draw Mechanic

New 31 May 2017 Asked by kyran-the-walker 43 Comments

"Would green be able to get card draw tied to creature cards in your graveyard?" "Maybe, in a graveyard themed set." --- There was Grim Flowering in Dark Ascension which is exactly that.
