White's Unique Abilities

New 12 Apr 2022 Asked by boypicassofunnglassesgameneohack 103 Comments

Curious what you perceive to be white's unique abilities/identity? I'm just curious what white's strengths are that aren't as good (if not better) in green.

Effects primary in white: (green isn’t strong in current color pie in things that are bolded)
  • +1/+1 counter (creation and caring)
  • Animating Enchantments (Target/all non-aura enchantment(s) you control becomes an enchantment creature.)
  • Banisher Priest-like effects (When this card enters the battlefield, exile target creature/permanent until this card leaves play.)
  • Bring back creatures/permanents that went to the graveyard this turn
  • Can’t be attacked. (Creatures can’t attack you.)
  • Can’t lose the game and opponents can’t win.
  • Destroy target attacking or blocking creature.
  • Destroy target creature. Its controller gets compensation.
  • Destroy target creature that damaged you or a creature you control this turn.
  • Destroy target tapped creature.
  • Destroy target creature with power ¾ or greater.
  • Destroy all creatures.
  • Destroy all creatures with power ¾ or greater.

  • -N/+N (on spells)
  • -N/+N (on Auras)
  • +0/+N (on creatures)
  • +0/+N (on spells)

  • +N/+N to your team, one-shot
  • +N/+N to your team, ongoing
  • Damage prevention (Prevent the next N damage that would be dealt to target creature/player.)
  • Damage redirection (Prevent the next N damage that would be dealt to target creature/player this turn. If damage is prevented in this way, this card deals that much damage to target creature/player.)
  • Defender
  • Deal N damage to target attacking or blocking creature.
  • Double strike
  • Enchantment destruction
  • “Enchantress” ability (Whenever you play an enchantment, draw a card.)
  • Exiling cards from graveyard

  • Friendly to planeswalkers
  • “Gaseous Form” (This creature neither deals nor receives damage.)
  • Indestructible

  • Lifelink
  • “Meddling” (Name a spell. That spell can’t be played as long as this card is on the battlefield.)
  • Pacifism-like effect (Enchanted creature cannot attack or block.)
  • Preventing actions (Your opponents can’t cast spells this turn.)
  • Protection
  • Putting enchantments from hand onto the battlefield
  • Putting planeswalkers from hand onto the battlefield
  • “Reanimate” permanent (Return a permanent card from a graveyard to the battlefield.)

  • “Warlord” (This creature’s power and toughness are equal to the number of creatures you control.)

Usage of Banisher Priest Effects

New 19 Oct 2021 Asked by exclusionmage 23 Comments

In the mechanical color pie article, you said banisher priest effects are only in white, but hasn't black gotten them in cards like hostage taker and gelatinous cube?

It’s possible it becomes secondary one day. Right now its used pretty infrequently in black.

Blue's Potential Pongify Effect

New 19 Oct 2021 Asked by doopboopdoop 49 Comments

Could Blue do a banisher priest style Pongify effect?

It’s not something we’ve done yet, but maybe. The key to blue’s transformations now is they’re temporary or undoable.

Secondary Color Abilities Frequency

New 04 Oct 2021 Asked by deyuil 36 Comments

In the old mechanical color pie article, the thing that gets me wondering is some of the "secondary" color abilities that have never really gotten cards for that, at least not since new world order. Green is apparently secondary in Banisher Priest effects? Red is secondary in bounce? Blue is secondary in permanent mana ramp? I'm not confused about something like land destruction being rare in Black, because land destruction is so uncommon in general, but most of the effects I mentioned above are fairly common in their primary color, but almost nonexistent in these. Wouldn't these be tertiary at best, or is it just because there's never been a reason to dip into these parts of the color pie although they could get it costed competitively if there was reason to?

There are some things in the original article that we moved away from or I was a little to optimistic we were moving towards. The update will fix many of the things you’re talking about. As for what counts as “secondary” or “tertiary”, it depends a lot on how often the effect happens in its primary color(s). If something happens once every other year, secondary will be less than that and tertiary will be way less than that. If it happens all the time, secondary can mean every set, but just not as often as primary.

Phasing vs Exile Debate

With "Out of Time" in mind, how do you feel about phasing vs exile for Banisher Priest–like effects?

We’re experimenting with phasing. They each have different strengths.

White's Mechanical Pie

New 16 Dec 2019 Asked by monikermage 55 Comments

Mark, as a fan of White, it worries me when I hear about members of R&D fighting to take what little is left of White's mechanical color pie(That you seem willing to still expound upon, since heavy taxing effects and MLD have fallen out of favor since they often create un-fun gameplay) and give it to other colors(Vis a vis green getting Banisher Priest effects). Can you help assuage these concerns since I can't see everything going on behind the scenes?

Green specifically didn’t get Banisher Priest.

Creature Removal Dynamics

New 15 Dec 2019 Asked by maybe-marit-lage 36 Comments

Hello Mark! Has the question of Banisher Priest effects in Green been permanently shelved? That seems to me a much better realisation of 'creature-dependent creature removal' than ETB Fight effects, which can often feel like a straight-up kill spell

I lost that fight with Big Bad Wolf.

White's Strengths

New 09 Oct 2019 Asked by luffington-blog 74 Comments

Hey Mark! Can you give us a few examples of things White does over other colors? Obviously has answers to nearly everything, but I mean like how blue has draw that its the best at, and green has ramp.

Things white is best at: (off the top of my head)- small creatures - Banisher Priest/Oblivion Ring- Pacifism/Arrest- life gain- reanimating/regrowing small creatures- mass creature removal- damage prevention/damage redirection - enchantment destruction- granting first strike/double strike - Flicker effects- rule setting enchantments- proactive answers - granting protection- regrowing/reanimating enchantments- taxing - token creation (specializing in small creatures)- granting vigilance

Artifacts as Enchantments

New 05 Oct 2019 Asked by uscdrewski-deactivated20210312 34 Comments

Many of the colored artifacts of Eldraine would make sense as enchantments, such as glass casket. Did you consider making them enchantment artifacts or is that status reserved for Theros?

The point of Glass Casket was to make a Oblivion Ring/Banisher Priest that played in different space (and matched the flavor). We’ve done it as an enchantment and a creature. We were interested trying it as an artifact.

Big Bad Wolf Design

New 20 Sep 2019 Asked by zubi492r69 55 Comments

Hello Mark! Another high five on the overall design of ELD. Everything looks amazing. Howhever, I just have a small complain: I wish big bad wolf would have had a more outstanding card. Each time a wolf has been spoiled, I wondered « is it him? ». None feel like « It is the one ». Hopefully for a return ;-)

The design of the Big Bad Wolf I made, which vision design handed off, exiled a creature of power less than the Wolf (as an “enter the battlefield” effect) for as long as it remained in the battlefield. Yes, this was the reason I included the Banisher Priest ability in green in the Mechanical Color Pie article. But too much of R&D didn’t feel comfortable with it in green so it got changed in set design. I was really proud of it as a top-down Big Bad Wolf.

Green's Mechanic Cancellation

New 04 Aug 2019 Asked by zanmor 39 Comments

"jchinnjr asked: Hi Mark! What was the reason for Banisher Priest effects being canceled in Green?" "I was trying something I thought was very flavorful in Throne of Eldraine. I prematurely put it into the Mechanuc Color Pie article, and it never gained traction in R&D and got changed." So they don't think green needs/should have that mechanic? I'm curious about what sort of hang ups it met with and how it differed from white banisher priest as you tried to implement it.

I’ll try to talk about it when Throne of Eldraine is all public.

Banisher Priest and Green

Green Creature Mechanic

New 04 Aug 2019 Asked by blaze-1013 34 Comments

Speaking of the Mechanical Color Pie article, you had Banisher Priest effects as secondary in Green. I don't think we've seen any Green creature do that since you wrote it, so is it safe to assume we'll be seeing this it soon?

No, it’s not happening. I was a bit premature and it got cut.

White's Token Mechanic

New 10 Mar 2019 Asked by tonyredgravedmc 24 Comments

Okay, Blue polymorphs instead of destroys, could White give itself a token instead of steal, Embalm+Banisher Priest style?

I’m not sure what you’re asking for.

Keywording the Trap Mechanic

New 08 Mar 2019 Asked by spadesslick 31 Comments

Related to the question about keywording the Banisher Priest ability, there are currently 10 cards with a variant of it in Standard, compared to 16 that mention Fighting. It's a fairly common mechanic, I think you could word it as something like "When X enters the battlefield, trap target nonland permanent". I feel that gets the meaning across fairly well.

Keywording fight saves a lot more text.

Keywording Banisher Priest

New 08 Mar 2019 Asked by wirelessreflexes 27 Comments

Has the Banisher Priest effect ever been considered for keywording? Cards with variations on that ability have been consistently showing up in every Standard set since the Khans block, and the core wording of "exile target something until ~ leaves the battlefield" seems well suited to the keyword treatment.

Two issues:1) We don’t use it a lot, usually no more than 1 or 2 per set, sometimes not st all.2) It has a variable (what gets exiled).

Green Banisher Experiment

New 10 Dec 2018 Asked by oldtumblehome 29 Comments

Is the ‘Green is Secondary in Banisher Priest effects’ experiment something that never materialized, just something we haven’t seen yet, or something else?

It’s still a work in progress, but things aren’t looking great.

Effect Rarity Issue

New 16 Feb 2018 Asked by miztickow 69 Comments

You say Banisher Priest type effects are primary in white and secondary in blue and green, but I can only find 2 in blue (Colossal Whale and Day of the Dragons) and 0 in green. Can it really be labeled as secondary when none exist (assuming I haven't missed any)?

That was the one thing in the whole document where I was looking ahead. I shouldn’t have done that, but too late now. : )

Green's Future Mechanics

New 08 Dec 2017 Asked by darkestcrow 74 Comments

In your Mechanical Color Pie article, you say that Green is Secondary in "Banisher Priest-like effects". I can't seem to find any example of cards like this and was wondering how it fit into Green's slice of the pie?

It was a bit future looking.

Creature Solution Color

New 05 Mar 2017 Asked by szwanger 25 Comments

Since Banisher Priest is a creature-based answer to a creature, could it be printed in green?

Being a creature answer on a creature does not necessarily make it a green effect.
