Defining Batching in Creatures

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 1 Comments

Is aysen crusader, retroactively, the first creature to use batching? Heroes are defined as soldiers and warriors. If you wanted to batch soldiers and warriors again would you use the word heroes?

Batching involves not only grouping items, but also giving a word to reference that grouping. Soldiers and Warriors would not necessarily be called Heroes if they were batched.

Future for Creature Groupings

New 12 Jun 2024 Asked by polarisfluff 15 Comments

Are we going to see more mechanics for groupings of creature types like outlaws in the future? Like maybe fighters (Knights, soldiers, warriors, archers) or critters (rabbits, squirrels, rats, mice, etc) or undead (zombies skeletons vampires spirits)? Where does it sit on the storm scale?

There will be more batching. We do want to be careful how often and how intuitive the groupings are.

Token Variety Feedback

New 05 May 2024 Asked by frakkedorfiction 12 Comments

I have some dissenting feedback on the tokens - I enjoy the variety of obscure tokens in packs and would be disappointed if the Big Score tokens didn't appear in the set. I feel like in some sets you never see the interesting tokens because all that gets opened is soldiers and treasure

How do others feel on the token issue?

Token Language Evolution

New 17 Apr 2024 Asked by nightfiremelody 23 Comments

Hello, Mark! Do you think it's possible we'll ever see a non-Acorn card "create" something other than a token? If not, do you think we'd ever see the word "token" implied, so as to save space on the card? For example, "Create a Treasure," or "Create a 1/1 white Human Soldier creature."

I’m skeptical we’ll stop labeling tokens. I don’t know if we’ll ever make another noncard component, but we might.

Potential Fighter Batch

Could we see a "fighter" batch with Knights, Soldiers, Warriors, etc in it?

Sure, it’s a potential batch.

First Created Cards

New 13 Apr 2024 Asked by stormcrow13 62 Comments

Do you remember what the first card you made that got printed was

It was three cards in Alliances: Gustha’s Scepter, Library of Lat-Nam, and Soldier of Fortune. I also named Force of Will. I didn’t like the name it had, knew it was going to be the hot card from the set, and said it needed a better name. The person in charge of the name said, “Come up with a better name and we’ll change it,” so I did.

Token Creature Type

New 07 Apr 2024 Asked by crazydreamingninja 82 Comments

I saw the question about amassing without an extra creature type, and you said that it needed an extra type for the token art. If we saw an army like the boros legion (comprising of multiple creature types) would you make the armies second type something like soldier? Thus allowing the token art to feature, for example, a goblin, giant, angel and human all on one token?

The question was about having no type, not no second type.

Creature Type Choices

New 20 Mar 2024 Asked by deoxys314 25 Comments

Is there an internal reference somewhere with what you're "going for" with creature types? I'm thinking of a designer asking "should this be a Warrior or Soldier token?" When neither type has specific mechanical relevancy in that product. Even without a mechanical throughline, different creature types can evoke different things about the setting or about the action depicted by the card.

Creature types, when not mechanically relevant, are determined by the creative team and are driven by what the creature is flavorfully.

Creature Type Diversity

New 15 Mar 2024 Asked by joeyfog 39 Comments

Just a minor feedback note: I like having soldiers, warriors, berserkers, knights, etc. They all have a different feel to me. Soldiers more uniform, warriors more independent and savage, berserkers a lot more independent and savage, knights very regal and important. All of these are similar but feel really cool

There is enough fighting and magic casting in our game, that we need a number of creature type classes to capture it all.

Thoughts on Soldier Creature Type

New 15 Mar 2024 Asked by kilo-pascal 26 Comments

Just a minor feedback note. I don't find soldiers evocative or engaging as a creature type, especially when compared to knights or warriors. I understand that soldiers have been more supported in the past, but I hoped magic was moving away from them. Nothing against soldier fans, of course.

We make a lot of sets. We can support a lot of creature types. Soldiers definitely have their fans.

Community UB Requests

New 01 Mar 2024 Asked by thewonko 39 Comments

Well, if today is UB wishlist time, my pod has mentioned recently some things they'd like to see

Avatar (The Last Airbender, not the James Cameron one) - Lots of elemental magic, soldiers, monks, and weird magical creatures

Discworld - A Magic-adjacent genre space, plus fans who are very passionate about it.

Star Wars - We're getting a Space Opera set next year, and what's a Jedi but a Space Monk?

Power Rangers - Transforming legendary creatures! Giant robots! Other Giant Robots made of the first giant robots! (This is a direct quote from the person who said she wanted to see Power Rangers)

Thanks.

Synergy in Set Types

New 13 Feb 2024 Asked by ceta-maelstrom 44 Comments

I'm sure this isn't helped by the extra year added on to standard, but UW has 4 kindred synergies its trying to support currently within standard (spirits, soldiers, knights, detectives). It feels like soldiers and knights could have at least mentioned each other to help cross set synergy out, as right now, these decks are very much locked into their own sets when looking for support. Has it shown to be a problem per your data? If so do you have ideas on what could be done different?

There are no Kindred cards in Standard, but my guess is you’re talking about typal themes. The philosophy is the set that cares makes the typal cards that mechanically matter and then other sets will make more creatures that share the type. We will batch on occasion, but only if both types are relevant in the set the card is in. (Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty had Ninjas and Rogues in it, for example.) We will mechanically return to more popular creature types over time, but that usually isn’t relevant for Standard.

Aven Trivia

New 11 Feb 2024 Asked by cursedereaper 36 Comments

Hey Mark. Trying again on my birthday trivia.I liked Avens ever since I saw the art of Aven Fisher. And I really enjoyed Francisco as a legendary cockatoo. He has a similar expression to my late parrot. Yes also once walked around with a (dull) knife 😅Can I get a trivia on avens, Fransisco or legendary birds in MTG?PS: I love to play Fransisco simply as a reminder to my parrot who spent a lot of time on my shoulder when I first started MTG.

When Avens first appeared, in Odyssey, I made sure every one was Bird with a Class type, mostly Soldier, as I was trying hard to get more creature types on the card type line. Happy Belated Birthday!

Token Color Indicators

New 25 Jan 2024 Asked by ebonstone 26 Comments

"Why don’t tokens have color indicators? My best guess is they don’t technically need them." They kind of do. I keep running into the problem with the Gnome Soldiers being White, but everyone believing they're Colorless due to the token being borderless.

I wasn’t saying it wouldn’t help for game play purposes. I was saying the rules don’t require it.

Creature Type Reasons

what makes a magic card have the warrior, knight or soldier type?

Usually flavor, but sometimes typal themes in a set.

Typal Draft Archetypes

New 04 Jan 2024 Asked by yuleooze 26 Comments

Hi Mark! Next time you talk about typal draft archetypes on your podcast, could you talk about the creatures that dont get the type that matters? The berserkers in KTK that could have been warriors, the soldiers in ELD etc.

If every creature is the relevant type, we might as well just say “creature”. The reason typal is interesting for design is that it makes players evaluate cards differently.

Soldier Token Power

New 02 Jan 2024 Asked by aalgot 79 Comments

Why are soldier token’s literally the second weakest that it is even possible for a creature to be

Soldiers are core to white which has a go-wide strategy. that wants 1/1 creature tokens, mostly.I don’t advise trying to make flavorful sense of power and toughness. It’s a dark rabbit hole.

Citizen vs Soldier Tokens

New 31 Dec 2023 Asked by aalgot 63 Comments

Why are citizen tokens stronger than soldier tokens?

They aren’t, except when involved in a planet-wide celebration, and then they’re just so excited. : )
