Snake vs Serpent Distinction

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by zombsidian 13 Comments

So, all Naga have been changed over to Snakes, but what is the substantial difference between Snake creatures and Serpent creatures? Is Serpent just big Snake?

The Serpent creature type in Magic is synonymous with sea monster. It’s not a big snake.

Batching Sea Monsters

New 02 Jun 2024 Asked by genericprincess 23 Comments

Would R&D ever consider batching KLOS into "sea monster" or something similar? Yours, a very "creature theme matters" Aesi player. P.s. Please give high fives to everyone involved in the design of OTJ, this is my favorite limited set since MOM.

It’s on the table. Batching has mostly been pretty popular.High fives will be applied.

Tokens vs Cards

New 20 May 2024 Asked by banksyguythrowingthings 18 Comments

I'd question the "no flavor difference btwn tokens and cards". To me, most tokens feel like extras in a movie. Some citizens, some goblins, some zombies, even a sea monster. There are exceptions like legendary/named tokens of course (often sidekicks), but in general tokens feel a bit more "generic" than cards. P.s.: I love tokens, this is not an attack on them - just vibes.

I’ve had this conversation with the creative team many times. If a Bear and a token Bear are both in front of you, there’s no way to tell them apart with the naked eye. It’s just two Bears.

Potential for Sea Monster Batch

New 01 May 2024 Asked by joeyfog 19 Comments

Do you think there's potential for sea monster to get it's own batching? Would it require the set to be focused around sea monsters or could it be a minor theme or mechanic of the set.

We only batch when the batch plays a significant enough role in the set.

Origin of Sea Monster Tribal

Didn't Sea monster tribal actually start with Quest for Ula's Temple?

It did.

Two Word Creature Types

New 28 Jul 2023 Asked by bear-girl-haunches 39 Comments

Does time lord being the first two word creature type increase the likelihood of more two word creature types (e.g. Sea Monster) being created?

Time Lord is not meant as a precedent. Two word keywords can cause confusion, so Time Lord shouldn’t be seen as the start of a new resource.

Sea Monster Classification

New 01 May 2023 Asked by angelfish-777 36 Comments

is there a reason why Nezehal, Primal Tide isn't a leviathan? I mean, it's a giant sea monster. which makes me curious, how do you go about defining Leviathan from Kraken and Kraken from octopus?

It’s a feel thing. There’s definitely some subjectivity.

Marine Environments in MTG

New 15 Jan 2023 Asked by mrtitanic 228 Comments

As a deep ocean researcher, I really would love more marine creatures and environments in MTG, as well as an oceanographer creature someday. There have been some remarkable additions lately with sea monster support and Kenessos, so I hope to see this continue. Especially lands depicting cold seeps, brine pools, reefs, hydrothermal vents, etc. A Water World plane is a dream come true for me.

It’s on the short list.Who would like a water world, and if yes, what would you like to see it to contain?

Kenessos Design Joy

New 25 Nov 2022 Asked by mrtitanic 36 Comments

Thank you to whoever designed Kenessos, Priest of Thassa! Not only have I always wanted this character on a card, but I've been requesting a Sea Monster Commander for years now - and I now have both in one card! YAY!

Glad you’re enjoying it.

Serpents vs Snakes

New 23 Aug 2022 Asked by red-in-revolt 44 Comments

Hey Mark, so my roommate and I were having a discussion in the car the other day and it sparked a rather contentious question (contentious purely because I'm studying to be a herpetologist) . What is the difference in MTG between a serpent and a snake?

In Magic, a Serpent is a sea monster. A Snake is, well, a snake.

Differences: Snake and Serpent Creatures

New 16 Feb 2021 Asked by experimentkraj 57 Comments

whats the difference between a snake-type creature and a serpent-type creature? why not just combine the two?

A snake is like the Earth animal that slithers on the ground. A serpent is a sea monster.

Sea Monsters in Kaldheim

New 17 Dec 2020 Asked by somethinglame1-blog 52 Comments

Just saw your spoiler for Kaldheim and while I'm excited for the set I couldn't help but notice a lack of sea monsters. We only got a couple new additions in the historically sea monster monster planes of Theros and Zendikar. So my question is will there be a different upcoming set where they're given more tribal support?

Just because I didn’t list a sea monster doesn’t mean the set doesn’t have any.

Creature Type Differences

New 14 Sep 2020 Asked by drwombear 45 Comments

Whats the difference between serpent and snake or nightmares and horrors?

Serpent is a giant sea monster. Snake is a snake. Nightmare is a living nightmare (or a flaming horse). Horror is a catch-all for very scary things.

Sea Monster Playability

New 19 Jun 2020 Asked by ascan7 59 Comments

I don't get why you have to pushy bomb sphinxes almost every set and show no love to krakens, leviathans and other monsters. They always end up being limited filler while sphinxes get commander bombs like Consecrated Sphinx. Please make sea monsters playable.

Sphinxes are blue’s iconic creature. That doesn’t mean though that we can’t make the occasional good sea monster. I’ll pass along the note.

Serpent Naming Issue

New 19 Jan 2020 Asked by abelzumi 68 Comments

I feel that that previous question wasn't fully parsed. Why WASN'T Stonecoil Serpent a Serpent-type, if that precedent is in place?

The word “serpent” can mean different things. It can be a giant sea monster, often with legs, or a synonym for snake. The creature type Serpent is the former definition. For the latter definition, we use the creature type Snake.Stonecoil Serpent is a giant snake, but not a sea monster, so it gets the creature type that matches that definition. That said, it’s probably a bad idea to use “serpent” in its snake definition in card titles because the Serpent creature type exists.Come for the behind-the-scenes Magic knowledge, leave knowing a little more about the English language. : )

Sea Monster Excitement

New 26 Dec 2019 Asked by mrtitanic 52 Comments

Between Theros (my favorite plane), Ikoria (evidently a monster plane) and Zendikar (adventure world plane and my second favorite plane)... can a sea monster fan expect a few treats? Because all three of those sound ripe for sea monster support.

There may be some sea-based monsters coming your way. : )

Creature Type Names

New 29 Nov 2019 Asked by kingmagni 45 Comments

How do you feel about cards with a misleading name (e.g. Stonecoil Serpent not being a serpent)?

As a general rule, cards with a supported creature type in their name are that creature type. The word “serpent” is odd as it has two meanings, and the card meant it as the snake definition, as opposed to sea monster definition. Probably that means it should have been called Steamcoil Snake.

Blue Characteristics

"She’s scheming and tricky and loves stealing things. She also systematically works to keep improving her capabilities, whether it’s finding the best sea monster to summon or the most effective gadgets to steal." Whoa whoa whoa! Schemes are a black thing, no? Doesnt trickster feel more at home in red? The love to steal things? I understand take something to study, or to mind control, but just plane ol' blatent thievery?

Scheming and trickery and stealing are all base blue things. Black is more about doing things others won’t and less about elaborate sneaky plans.

Kiora's Blue Alignment

New 27 Aug 2019 Asked by parentheticalproductions-blog 62 Comments

I've alwyaaenjoyed how characters tie into their colors not only through their magical talents, but also their philosophy. It is one of the things that really helps the color pie work from a flavor perspective. That being said, how on Earth is Kiora blue, philosophically speaking?

She’s scheming and tricky and loves stealing things. She also systematically works to keep improving her capabilities, whether it’s finding the best sea monster to summon or the most effective gadgets to steal.
