Creature Type Uniqueness

New 04 Apr 2024 Asked by bcrazy713 111 Comments

Hey Mark, on the topic of players being worried about creature types losing their distinctiveness by being added in with the broader type rather than a specific race (ex. Viashino(Lizard) or Naga(Snake)), I looked to see how many are already currently templated this way and there are ALOT more than I realized.Archaic (Avatar), Aven (Bird), Leonin (Cat), Malamet (Cat), Nishoba (Cat Beast), Daemogoth (Demon), Ainok (Dog), Flamekin (Elemental), Loxodon (Elephant), Mycoid (Fungus), Thallid (Fungus), Akki (Goblin), Boggart (Goblin), Mogg (Goblin), Redcaps (Goblin), Eumidian (Insect), Kraul (Insect), Nantuko (Insect), Khenra (Jackal), Kitsune (Fox), Merrow (Merfolk), Selkie (Merfolk), Triton (Merfolk), Onakke (Ogre), Caryatid (Plant), Nezume (Rat), Rhox (Rhino), Amphin (Salamander), Orochi (Snake), Kami (Spirit), Drogskol (Spirit), Eidolon (Spirit), Ent (LoTR) (Treefolk), Trow (Troll), Kappa (Turtle), Liche (Zombie), Eternal (Zombie), Draugr (Zombie), Nim (Zombie), Skaab (Zombie)

Yep. Most of the ones that didn’t do it entered the game before we made this the default.

Appreciation for Biological Facts

New 30 Mar 2022 Asked by rincewindthewanderer 55 Comments

Can I give praise to the creative team for the little tidbits of biological fact baked into the animal races on New Capenna? I love the rhox having poor eyesight, and although I dislike the new design of cephalids, them not having bones is pretty cool. I'm a huge biology nerd and those little nods to the animal the species is based on really make me happy

I’ll pass along your kind words.

Perception on Set Similarities

New 12 Mar 2022 Asked by questionm4ster 100 Comments

In response to the person who said "many of the same creatures types on capenna as alara" will make the worlds feel too similar, what creature types are you referring to? Brokers Ascendancy shows a human, a rhox, an avian and a cat person (and we know there are demons in the set). As far as I can tell, there is not much info yet about what is or isn't isn't in the set. I'd like to remind people of the assumptions that they had about NEO before. Let's see the cards first before judging the set.

But judging before you have the information is a time-tested Magic tradition. : )

Classifying Dinosaur Race

New 26 Nov 2020 Asked by arandomstringofcharacters 28 Comments

"The terms “race” and “class”, in Magic terms, are used to represent sapient (and usually humanoid) species and jobs they can hold." So if we had Saurian-folk (the way we have Leonin, Rhox, Loxodon, Natuko, Orochi Ainok, and several varieties of Aven), then wouldn't dinosaur suddenly be a race?

Dinosaur-folk, assuming they’re sapient which I assume they would be, would be a race.

You may.

Green's Humanoid Tribes

New 25 Jun 2019 Asked by bcrossfire 51 Comments

I feel as though green is lacking a humanoid tribe that exemplifies strength. Elves are more elegant than bulky, more classy than savage. Could Orcs work well in green, you think? They convey green's brutal, savage side well. Maybe we could see Orcs as a BRG tribal faction sometime?

They have Rhox, and I think occasionally Loxodon.

Rhox Distribution Query

New 19 May 2019 Asked by arjaysking-deactivated20200207 79 Comments

Hey, Mark. I have a creature question. Why are there no Rhox on Ravnica? There's Loxodon on both Ravnica and Mirrodin. Rhox have only been seen on Alara and core set cards. Are Rhox nowhere else in the Multiverse?

Didn’t Theros have Chained to the Rhox? : )

Sonic Crossbreeding Clarified

New 20 Dec 2018 Asked by huf0001 26 Comments

Re Sonic crossbreeding: "I was talking about crossbreeding races (which they do, but infrequently). They crossbreed animal types all the time." By races you mean humanoid/sapient species? (And technically most or all of those would be animals).

By races, I was taking about things like Human, Elf, Goblin and Merfolk, races we support in creature types. Animal races (Loxodon, Leonin, Rhox, etc.) we don’t normally support in creature types choosing to list the animal type instead.

White's Doubling Mechanics

New 07 Nov 2018 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 30 Comments

White has doubled: life total (Beacon of Immortality, Celestial Mantle), creature tokens (Annointed Procession), lifegain (Boon Reflection, Rhox Faithmender), and combat damage (via Double Strike on lots of things, notably True Conviction for all creatures)

Rhox Trivia

New 20 May 2018 Asked by tiefntall 40 Comments

Hi Mark! Yesterday was my birthday and I wasn't able to get to a computer. I was wondering if I could have some trivia about the very first MTG card that I owned - Rhox!

Rhox is one of a few creatures to show up in a Magic commercial. He was watching a focus test through a one-way mirror and loses it when one of the testers plays his card wrong. Happy Birthday!

Super Trample Rarity

New 26 Apr 2017 Asked by crovaxthelax-blog 17 Comments

Why hasn't there been many more creatures with "super trample" a la Thorn Elemental and Rhox? My guess is limited design space but it was really fun back in the day and seems keywordable.

It isn’t something we want to do enough to keyword.

Creature Type Justifications

New 15 Apr 2017 Asked by j-t-wolf 37 Comments

While there was a group that wanted Snake as the creature type, there was also a group that liked Naga being a creature type. It was a bit of a Mel/Vorthos split. So when are the Leonin going to stop being cats or the Avens going to stop being birds or the Rhox or Loxidon or any other highly supported animal based creature? It really feels like creative is contradicting itself here.

Naga is a real world existing thing. We made Leonin up. Thus, we will lean towards using known resonant things (such as Minotaur, Werewolves and Centaurs) as creature types and using the animal name as a creature type when the word has no inherent resonant bearing.

Magic Joke

Designing Animal People

New 05 Nov 2016 Asked by a-deg 31 Comments

When developing animal-people (like Aven or Rhox), how much do you consider what players expect due to knowledge about the real-world, non-sapient version?

We want to make sure the humanoid version has some basic iconic connections. We want loxodons to feel elephant-ish. But we aren’t concerned with getting the science 100% as humanoid versions are inherently not that.

Creature Type Equity

New 05 Jun 2016 Asked by mosey-that-ass-in-a-circle 36 Comments

I still wish that Leonin were their own creature type along with Aven, Rhox, Loxodons, and Ainok. They shouldn't be Cats, Birds, Rhinos, Elephants and Hounds just like Viashino, Merfolk, and Werewolves aren't Lizards, Fish and Wolves.

The line for me is “does the word have equity outside the game?” Minotaur does. Leonin does not. Werewolf does. Loxodon does not.

Hippo People Color

New 29 May 2016 Asked by eachdayaholiday 32 Comments

What colors do you think the hippo people will be when you print them. (key word: when) Will they stay with the usual bant colors of the loxodon and rhox? Or would you say that they could be more gluttonous and warlike? I know the most famous one is bant and the other hippos follow suit, but

The hippopulace would for sure be Green but the second color would be reflective of their creative and place in the world.
