Reaper King

Future Scarecrow Commander

New 08 Mar 2023 Asked by fancifoolery 44 Comments

What are the odds of us getting a new Scarecrow commander that is less oppressive than Reaper King and more synergistic in the near future.... compleated Reaper King?

I can’t tell you how soon something can happen, but I do believe another legendary Scarecrow is more when than if.

Creating Strong Scarecrows

New 08 Feb 2023 Asked by ultimacc 28 Comments

Dear Mark, first question after reading the Blogatog for few years.I always loved the Reaper King, but scarecrows are not so many and not so strong to make a real EDH tribal in my opinion (I don't like use Changelings).I was thinking, is it difficult to create new strong scarecrows cards when there is a powerful "commander /lord card" that can be broken? This is an example with my favourite tribe, I think it could be the same with others that I don't know. Thanks

Eternal formats are very powerful, so we usually don’t worry about new cards (especially ones going into themes that aren’t already dominant) causing major problems. If they do, we have resources like banning.

Scarecrow Absence in New Sets

New 10 Nov 2021 Asked by arcadesuperturbo 45 Comments

Hello, Mark. I’m a big Scarecrow (and Slivers!) fan, and the absence of Scarecrows from VOW and only one in MID is a design or flavor decision? My group believes that there’s a design pressure on the tribe because every new Scarecrow will be considered for Reaper King, so there’s not a lot of design space for them. Is that true?

It’s just Innistrad sets have a lot of competition for creature type slots and the sets being tribal means a good chunk of the creatures have the be the main five (with Wolves counting as Werewolves for this purpose). There was no inherent ill will against Scarecrows.

May I request a non-mono colored legendary crab?

I hear Reaper King can get pretty grouchy. : )

Hybrid-Matters Commander Possibility

New 11 Jun 2020 Asked by andymontalbon 45 Comments

I'm a huge fan of hybrid (the frames are so much more beautiful than gold frames!) Could we get a hybrid-matters commander, or another multi-hybrid legend? (3+ colors helps because EDH makes it harder to play a lot of hybrid cards in one deck. Sadly Reaper King is pretty narrow.)

I’m not sure we can care about hybrid mechanically. On the battlefield, hybrid permanents are just multicolored (which we occasionally care about). In theory, we could look at the mana cost, but it’s not something we’ve ever done.

Speaking Mana Costs

New 16 May 2020 Asked by tmbocheeko 26 Comments

How does R&D say hybrid costs when speaking mana costs? Especially the weirder ones like the Mutate ability on the Apexes from Ikoria and things like Thopter Foundry from Alara? What about twobrid like Beseech the Queen and Reaper King?

Let’s say a cost is 2(b/r), we’d say “two hybrid - black/red”. If a card was 2(2/w), we’d say “two hybrid - two/white”’

Possibility of Reaper Queen

New 16 Mar 2020 Asked by gutseki-blog 79 Comments

I'm a huge fan of Reaper King (scarecrow tribal). Do you think we might get to see a queen or prince in the future or would that be too silly?

Reaper Queen makes me smile.

Scarecrow Connection

New 21 Sep 2019 Asked by kelebriel 47 Comments

When I looked at Signpost Scarecrow, it wasn't until I looked at the big daddy scarecrow, Reaper King, that I noticed the connection. Two mana for one colored mana. Very subtle. I love it! Give everyone involved a high five!

Will do!

WUBRG Artifact Query

New 01 Jul 2019 Asked by fantastigasmical 87 Comments

How long till a WUBRG artifact?

Negative thirteen years if you’re talking about a five-color artifact (Transguild Courrier from Dissension) and negative eleven years if you mean an artifact you can cast for literal WUBRG (Reaper King from Shadowmoor). Sphinx of the Guildpact from Ravnica Allegiance is also a five-color artifact.

They asked about “another one”.

Monohybrid Mana Discussion

New 06 Jan 2018 Asked by eristocrates 26 Comments

Long time drive to work listener, first time blogatog questioner here. In the kaladesh lessons learned ep you brought up a potential willingness to color Artifacts more. On a scale of 1 to s10rm, how likely do you think monohybrid mana (a la Reaper king) is to solve some of your problems?

Monocolored Hybrid is pretty restrictive so while it might help in a very particular setting, it’s not the solution to the larger problem.

Hybrid Mana Cost Explanation

New 07 Nov 2017 Asked by loreweaver 22 Comments

You already did hybrid colored/colorless mana costs in Shadowmoor, the cycle of cards that cost three hybrid mana symbols that were one color or two colorless mana. (Also Reaper King.)

We did two-bird which was one color or two generic mana. The asker wanted one color or one colorless.

Hybrid Mana Symbols

New 27 Aug 2017 Asked by metaknight2040 32 Comments

Re: different hybrid mana symbols in a single mana cost. This actually has been done exactly once I believe. Reaper King in Shadowmoor. That was obviously a special case and is easily grokkable, but figured it was worth pointing out.

Reaper King is part of what made us realize the confusion it causes.

Brass Man, Bottle Gnomes

New 24 Mar 2017 Asked by comet2121 30 Comments

Hey Maro, my Birthday was on the 20th. Can I request some trivia on Brass Man, Bottle Gnomes, or Reaper King? They're all tied for my favorite creature.

Originally the five color two-brid card and the Scarecrow lord were separate cards but we realized they worked well together.Happy Birthday!

Reaper King's Fate

mark, buddy. if we ever return to lorwyn/shadowmoor can you promise not hurt the reaper king?

I can make no promises. Nor am I in charge of the group that would make that decision. All you can ask of me is to not publicly say I like the Reaper King.

Future for Scarecrows

New 15 Dec 2014 Asked by lovetillmidnight 59 Comments

I recently finished building my Reaper King commander and wanted to know how well Scarecrows were received and if we can expect more in the future?

I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Scarecrows.

Colored Artifacts Usage

New 09 Jan 2014 Asked by chardish 10 Comments

We've seen colored artifacts prominently in two blocks (Alara, Scars of Mirrodin), as a cycle in one block (Theros), and as one-off designs in three more places (Transguild Courier, Sarcomite Myr, Reaper King.) What's between them and being considered evergreen?

They are a tool we can use whenever we feel they are appropriate so they are evergreen in that sense. We want artifacts to be colorless the vast majority of the time so we don’t want to make colored artifacts a frequent thing.

Reaper King Defense

New 11 Feb 2013 Asked by midwestmtgjudge 8 Comments

More a comment: I'm not sure that Reaper King's comments actually constitute a Straw Man Argument. All of those points, with the exception of the fear factor, are valid arguments for why they wouldn't make good minions.

I didn’t say it was a straw man argument. I said his critics say it is.

Favorite Mana Costs

New 07 Feb 2013 Asked by eternalcheechako 11 Comments

Regarding the "Borborygmos Enraged" comment, do you have any favorite mana costs that made it onto cards? My top choice is currently Voidslimes "GUU" with "The Reaper King" getting an honorable mention for "TWUBRG".

I keep making pirate cards in design for RRR.
