Proxies

Funny Gameplay Moment

New 25 May 2024 Asked by rclijsters 12 Comments

Happy birthday, Mark. My story just happened a few weeks ago. I convinced some friends to play PleasantKenobi’s party-in-a-box. I’ve put the power9 in as proxies. So, we start and player 3 casts pearl mox on his first turn. No land drop yet. Player 1 says: I’ve got a response. P3: oh? P1: yeah. Mana tithe. Do you pay 1? Now, the disbelief on his face was hilarious. He looks at his board to tap his land, only to realize he hadn’t dropped his land yet. The rest of us start laughing. He starts negotiating. P3: come on, i’ve never played a mox before. Please, don’t. P1 just deadpanned : do you pay the one? Nothing but laughter and heckling the next 10 minutes before we let P3 proceed to his land drop and finish his turn. But he did win the game in the end.

Rathi Assassin Reprints

New 27 Apr 2024 Asked by strodeviking 44 Comments

Hey Mark, so I recently discovered that Rathi Assassin has had its creature type errated quite a bit over the years. So I went ahead and made a mockup proxy of its official typeline despite how small the text had to be. Would Wizards ever attempt to print a card with this many creature types? Or does this mean Rathi Assassin will never get a physical reprint since its type has been only technically and digitally updated by errata over the years?

There are numerous factors. Type line restrictions vary depending on what languages the card needs to be printed in. We can go a bit smaller on cards only printed in English. There are also some solutions that might involve rules text.

Board Game Mechanic

New 02 Apr 2024 Asked by corrach 49 Comments

If/when, introducing combat resolved by smaller, proxy games of Magic, with decks you build for each creature and planeswalker in your main deck

We are introducing a new mechanic called “board game” where you resolve conflict with a specific Hasbro board game.

Token Generator Creation Concerns

New 23 Mar 2021 Asked by rakdos-cultists 98 Comments

Hey Mark I know this is a common complaint In multiple play groups that play eternal formats that a couple of older token generators don't have have physical tokens outside of proxy or home made examples being Phelddagrifs 1/1 hippos, dune-broods 1/1 sand creature tokens, and boris devilbloons 1/1 minor demons. Have there been any thought about doing a spellbook type release to fill up these missing tokens?

I can pass along the request.

Feedback on Zendikar Rising Substitute Cards

New 26 Dec 2020 Asked by koani-mtg 84 Comments

Hi Mark, happy holidays! I'm writting to give a little bit of feedback, as I missed the Zendikar Rising Survey. I think the substitute cards for the MDFCs in Zendikar Rising are really not the nicest solution. Handwritten cards often look messy, "unoffical" or just simply like a proxy. The checklist cards from the Innistrad and Ixalan Sets were, in my opinion, a much better and cleaner solution! I hope you bring these back! Thank you!

The checklist cards were never super popular aesthetically, so we’re trying a new take on the substitute cards. What do you all think of them?

MTG Reference in YouTube Series

New 11 Nov 2020 Asked by krinstranger 43 Comments

Magic in pop culture shoutout: There's a YouTube series called 12Tone where the speaker talks about music and draws doodles to support the points. At one point he's saying that one idea can be used as a proxy for another, and he clearly sketches a Black Lotus. The video is called "Why Classical Harmony Doesn't Work Anymore."

Thanks for letting me know.

Proxy High-Five Consideration

Mark have you ever considered drafting other members of R&D to distribute proxy high-fives?

I feel it’s my job.

Maro Commander Proxy

New 17 Jul 2018 Asked by unseenarbiter 35 Comments

I'm making a Maro Commander deck and was thinking of having a proxy Maro in a second sleeve. Do you have a picture of yourself that you think would look good striking down enemy planeswalkers?

My Wikipedia photo has been put into public domain.

Reprint Playtest Methodology

New 04 Dec 2017 Asked by creature-humanteacher 33 Comments

When you play test a set with a reprint in the file, do you use a stickered proxy of the reprinted card, or do you use an actual copy of the card from a previous printing?

A sticker. It’s not worth the energy of tracking the real card down.

Artist Proof Legality

New 19 Jul 2016 Asked by temporal-stasis-deactivated2016 25 Comments

I was watching the store of the amazing Terese Nielsen and I was wandering, Are artist proof cards considered tournament legal or are they considered high end proxy?

I am pretty sure they are not tournament legal.

FFL Proxies Usage

Does FFL use real cards or the same proxies that design uses?

If it’s before the cards exist, they use stickered cards. If after, they use real ones.

Tinker Power Discussion

New 17 Jun 2015 Asked by nextlevelscrub 66 Comments

I recently played in a Vintage tournament (proxies allowed). After the tournament I've come to the conclusion that Tinker isn't powerful enough. Do you think we'll get a strictly better version in the future? :)

Tinker, interestingly, was chosen by R&D as the most broken card I’ve ever designed.

1996 Champion Power Level

New 06 Mar 2015 Asked by courtlandaricfargo 24 Comments

How powerful is 1996 World Champion? I kind of want to put (a proxy of) him into a cube, but I don't want him to out power all of the other cards.

It’s decently powerful and not in a fun way.

Playtesting vs Real Cards

New 29 Oct 2014 Asked by mistercottonsparrot 28 Comments

Hi there,I was just wondering. Do you play more magic with real printed cards or with proxies used in design?

I play way more with playtesting cards. Playing with real cards is a luxury.

Storm Crow Joke Explained

New 13 Sep 2014 Asked by subitized 116 Comments

As more elaboration on the storm crow deal: The reason the joke exists is because storm crow was first printed in alliances, the same set as force of will. At the time, FOW was the best card in magic, and by proxy, any blue card was also the best card in magic because it could be used to pay the alternate cost. The joke being that even stormcrow, an otherwise unplayable card was super OP because it could be pitched to force of will. The joke stuck around to this day.

Proxy Usage Explained

New 23 Nov 2013 Asked by ouroborial 5 Comments

What I don't understand is: with so many more printed commons than rares, why would you choose to stick proxies on Sorin Markovs?

When we get cards, what we call incrementals, we get an equal number of every card. As this is what we eventually use for sticker stock, our commons exist at the same volume as our rares.

Playing with Real Cards

New 29 Sep 2013 Asked by pyre89 12 Comments

Is it weird for you to okay with real cards? I imagine you play with proxies most of the time! On a related note, has the employee prerelease happened yet?

I play so much with stickered playtest cards that real cards do feel a bit strange. The employee Theros prerelease was last Tuesday. I chose the Path of Honor and ended up playing white/black. I went 0-3 (all pretty close matches) but had a great time.

Moat Joke Explained

New 04 Aug 2013 Asked by darrinkatzska 10 Comments

What's the joke behind using Moat as the card "Look at Me, I'm R&D" used as the base for its proxy?

R&D will sticker over old cards and whenever someone from outside R&D learns this they the always shocked over what we’ll sticker over. This was just a joke about that.

Monkeys and Bananas

New 18 Jun 2013 Asked by yoshiarecool 18 Comments

By proxy of their relationships with bananas, do you also hate monkeys and gorillas?

No, I like monkeys and gorillas. I find their love of bananas more worthy of pity than scorn.

Un-sets Value

New 13 May 2013 Asked by djdevries 30 Comments

I know you and others are wanting another Un-set, but I would far rather see a black-bordered set every time over a Un-set like we've seen. I don't know what Magic has to gain in regards to using up time and energy on a card set that is unplayable in basically all formats - I think that if people like to play it occasionally as a fun alternative, it's something that they could create themselves with more flexibility via proxies, etc. Do you really think this is attractive to the average player?

I think you massively underestimate how much Magic is played at kitchen tables as opposed to tournament venues. As I often say “Everyone doesn’t necessarily play the way you do.”
