Cost of Nonbasic Lands

New 19 Jan 2022 Asked by charble 46 Comments

"I simply wouldn’t have made them. I think Magic would be better off overall if they were never part of the game. Same for the original dual lands. I think the game would be improved if there was more of a cost stretching into extra colors." Just responding to this, as in older formats, there is a very great cost for playing nonbasic lands - Wasteland. The very existence of a card like Wasteland changes games to be more fair and cautious on average, and generally increases diversity in gameplay.

The problem exists, so we’ve designed cards to help address it. That doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be better if the problem never happened in the first place.

Concerns about Plane Returns

New 19 Aug 2021 Asked by hugsandambitions 99 Comments

Mark, I feel like you might be overcorrecting in these recent returns. We returned to Zendikar after it was devastated by Eldrazi, and it wasn't just "No eldrazi remain," it was as if it never happened. Sea Gate in one piece. No hint of grey dust or bismuth distortions. No stories of economic recovery, the bonds forged in hardship, no.... scars. Yarok was a great example of those scars, but we only got him in a core set and that was it. I'm worried Innistrad will go the same way.

There is a difference between Zendikar still having scars of the Eldrazi occupation and us choosing to focus on that in the cards we picked. Those scars are very much still there.

Squirrel Story

New 31 Jul 2021 Asked by tecjohnson 46 Comments

Does your fondness for squirrels come from Boston University where they will literally climb up your leg and steal food out of your hand? (Happened to me twice.)

That never happened to me.

Planeswalker Cards Retraction

New 18 Nov 2020 Asked by heretic798 99 Comments

It will never ever happen, but if you had unlimited power as a designer, would you put planeswalker cards back in Pandora's box and make it like they'd never happened?

No, Planeswalker cards are doing good work. In market research they are the favorite card type.

Hourglass Pendant of Gerrard Capashen

New 19 Sep 2020 Asked by astralwizard85 40 Comments

I would like to the rite of Birthday Trivia. You've spoken subtly about the Hourglass Pendant of Gerrard Capashen from time to time. Could you tell me what power this mystical artifact would have embodied?

In the original version of the Weatherlight Saga (aka as Michael and I envisioned it - not necessarily what’s true now) It let you eradicate one event from the past to change the world as though it never happened. Gerard knew it was destined to be important, but didn’t know what it actually did. Happy Birthday!

Spiderman's Moral Choice

New 12 Jan 2019 Asked by theuninvitedghost 34 Comments

Was Spidey’s decision to make a deal with Mephisto to save Aunt May done with Aunt May in mind, or himself? I think it was a black choice, not a white choice.

He gave up being married to the woman of his dreams, Mary Jane (It was undone so it never happened) to save the life of his Aunt May? That is the opposite of being selfish.

Portal in Masters 25

New 05 Mar 2018 Asked by planswalkerus-blog 46 Comments

Why were the portal sets excluded from Masters 25? I understand that they weren't successful, but if even homelands got a card, why is Wizards trying to pretend Portal never happened?

I could be wrong, but I thought the Portsl sets were represented in Masters 25.,The only sets I know not represented was the Un-sets.

Secondary Twitter Account

New 29 Jul 2017 Asked by hi-im-cixmen-deactivated2022122 20 Comments

Do you have a secondary Twitter account to participate in your own polls?

I do not. The only time I vote is breaking a tie in the finals. It’s so far never happened.

Gum Regulation Issues

New 25 Jul 2017 Asked by the-machine-orthodoxy 63 Comments

If the team were to have decided that gum is actually food, would you have included gum in the un-hinged booster packs? Or Vice versa, if the team had decided that gum was going to be in the packs, would it have pushed the team to decide that gum is food?

We looked into having gum in Unglued 2 (that Un-set that never happened) and it turns out the government thinks it’s food and it adds a whole bunch of new regulations that would have greatly complicated making it.

Exert vs Double Tap

New 28 Mar 2017 Asked by u-flame 26 Comments

I believe you once mentioned a mechanic that never happened that was like double tapping, where a card wouldn't fully untap until the untap step after the next. Isn't embalm pretty much exactly that?

I think you mean Exert and no they’re a bit different. Double tap was on activations and Exert only triggers on attack.

Allied vs Enemy Lands

New 02 Feb 2017 Asked by sultaiascendancy-blog 32 Comments

Allied lands almost always get printed before enemy in rare land cycles, and with so many going unfinished, there are waaaaaay more options for allied colors than enemy, even though they are supposedly "equal" now? Will we ever see a cycle that does enemies first, and allies later (somehow this has never happened)?

The problem is when it’s enemy land’s turn, we often print the completion of a cycle players have been clamoring for.

Japanese Inspired Plane

New 21 Aug 2016 Asked by dungeonsanddoggos-deactivated20 51 Comments

I know you've said multiple times that a return to kamigawa is essentially never going to happen, but do you think magic will ever go to another Japan inspired plane?

I never said it will never happened. I said a new take on a Japanese inspired world is more likely.

Complex Meld Mechanic

New 01 Aug 2016 Asked by eman2100 26 Comments

Could there ever be a meld card that involves more than 2 cards meld my together?

I experimented with that back in Unglued 2 and it proved too hard to make work. It just never happened in play.

Conspiracy Border Choice

New 21 Sep 2014 Asked by meandering-monotreme 27 Comments

Why were the conspiracies given a black border despite the fact that they are banned from every non-Conspiracy format? Wouldn't a silver border have been more consistent?

There was talk about using a different border but it never happened.

Public View on Jace

New 03 Sep 2014 Asked by disappointedreader-deactivated2 43 Comments

If I didn't know better, I might think based on the questions you answer that WotC had produced multiple "Jace matters" blocks in a row, where every card in the set was about him. Except that's never happened. Whence comes this anti-Jace obsession, or at least this myth of Jace being everywhere?

The public seems to have a love/hate relationship with Jace. He keeps ranking as the most popular planeswalker while by far producing the most hate mail here.

Psychatog Creation

New 28 Feb 2014 Asked by maxwellperlman 14 Comments

Hey MaRo, Who designed psychatog? I am in a quest to get mine signed by both the designer and Edward P Beard Jr.

I designed Psychatog. I actually designed the whole gold cycle in Odyssey. Randy Buehler wanted to add a multicolor agog cycle and I came up with a a design. I also convinced him to put Atogatog in which I had made for Unglued 2 which never happened.

Revisiting Kamigawa

New 27 Jul 2013 Asked by flameeffigy 18 Comments

"I think we are more likely to try a new approach on Asian-inspired setting than return to Kamigawa." This seems kind of a waste. Isn't it better to go back to a place and fix anything deemed as a "mistake" and make it the best it can be rather than sweep it under the rug and pretend it never happened?

Going back and changing things that need to be changed can often be more work than starting fresh.

Five-Colored Planeswalker

New 07 Jun 2013 Asked by meatfist 17 Comments

A better question is a five-colored planeswalker probable?

I would be shocked if it never happened.

Iconic Creatures Removal

New 06 May 2013 Asked by dancesubomp-blog 14 Comments

Why did all the iconic big creatures like Shivan Dragon, Serra Angel, Sengir, and Mahamoti get taken out of 6th edition? Did R&D consider them too good back then?

There was a time that yes, believe it or not, we thought they were too good. In Unglued 2 (the one that never happened not Unhinged) I even made a card called Que Serra Serra that made fun of it. It was exactly a Serra Angel with an upkeep that made you say “This card is too goo to print.”

Unofficial Spoilers Policy

New 23 Dec 2012 Asked by archmageilmryn 2 Comments

Are you (and the rest of wizards staff) not allowed to comment on unofficial spoilers? In spoiler weeks they tend to be treated as if they'd never happened.

It is official Wizards policy to not comment on unofficial spoilers.
