Minions as Magic Creature

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by cheesedurian2 1 Comments

If Despicable Me's minions appear in Magic, would they have the Minion creature type?

I think it is the best possible scenario I could imagine of Minions returning as a creature type. : )

Trivia on Minion Creature Type

New 06 Jul 2024 Asked by worldlytutor 4 Comments

Hey Maro for my birthday could I get some trivia about the minion creature type? What did that mean and why don't we see it anymore?

It represented creatures that served other creatures. The creative team stopped supporting it because they felt it wasn’t necessary, and was covered by other existing creature types.

Minions Not Made

New 24 May 2024 Asked by gonzoron 6 Comments

You've said the OTJ Mercenaries weren't Minions because you don't make Minions any more. Are you able to say why not? Does it have anything to do with a certain group of yellow, overall-wearing, pop-culture characters?

We chose to stop doing Minion as a creature type decades before the yellow fellows existed, so I don’t think they’re the cause.

Outlaws Mechanic Trivia

New 17 May 2024 Asked by zendikon-sage 63 Comments

Hi Mark,It’s my birthday and me and my friends are going to play some OTJ sealed today. In honor of this, can I get some trivia on Outlaws, my favorite mechanic to come out of the set?

We made a list for Outlaw of any creature type that might make sense:
  • Assassin
  • Barbarian
  • Berserker
  • Minion
  • Mercenary
  • Ninja
  • Pirate
  • Rebel
  • Rogue
  • Warlock
Assassin and Rogue felt like automatic includes. We added Mercenary because we wanted the “henchperson” token to be a Mercenary. The creative team asked us to add Warlock because we needed to have an outlaw spellcaster to hit all the card concepts. That’s what we handed over to set design. When making a batch, we do between two and five, with three being optimal. Four seemed in a good spot and allowed set design to add something if they had to. They added Pirate because of all the Pirate cards in The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. We did talk through many of the others. We considered bringing Minion back instead of doing Mercenary (we stopped doing it a while ago). We talked a lot about Ninja. In the end though, we felt this collection best served the mechanic.Happy Birthday!

Mercenaries vs Minions

New 08 Apr 2024 Asked by jimharbor 22 Comments

You say you went with Mercenaries over Minions for the henchpeople in ITJ because you stopped making new minions outside of EDH throwbacks, with the last standard legal card original printed as a Minion in 2003, but the last standard legal Mercenary was printed in 2005. Mercenaries are a *bit* more used than Minions but was the difference seen as that significant?

We chose to stop making Minions. We never made that decision for Mercenaries.

Disuse of Minion

New 06 Apr 2024 Asked by 22bebo 31 Comments

Do you know why you guys do not support minion anymore?

It was a decision made twenty years ago. I believe the creative team didn’t feel it was needed. Other creature types filled in the gap.

Henchfolk Card Typing

New 06 Apr 2024 Asked by jimharbor 32 Comments

Why was Mercenary chosen for the henchfolk cards in OTJ instead of Minion? Thank you for answering our questions sir.

We support Minion in that we haven’t changed it from the cards that have it, but we don’t use it on new cards anymore. With the exception of three cards in Commander 2019 that were redone legendary creatures that were originally Minion (Chainer, K'rrik, and Xantcha), we haven’t printed Minion on a card since Legions in 2003 (21 years ago!)

Set Roster Decisions

New 26 Mar 2024 Asked by yeckit-blog 60 Comments

Loving things so far but a couple of questions, why weren't Ninjas considered outlaws and was clash considered for this set? The latter seems like it would fit flavor as a standoff with the higher cost being who drew and shot quicker.

Repeated batches, meaning things we use on multiple cards in the same set, are normally restricted between two and five items, with three being the sweet spot. We needed Rogues and Warlocks to hit all the creative executions we wanted. Mercenary was needed because that was our henchperson token. We also knew Assassin’s Creed with its Assassin typal theme was coming. We turned those four in when we handed off from vision, leaving one potential space open so set design could add something if needed. That something was Pirate due to all the ones added by The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. As I show in today’s article, we considered all the following:AssassinBarbarianBerserkerMinionMercenaryNinjaPirateRebelRogueWarlockThere just wasn’t room for all of them. Also, we prioritized what would be in the set. So some things, like Ninja, didn’t make the cut.As for clash, it’s just wasn’t popular enough when we first did it to bring it back.

Opinion on Gangster Archetypes

New 19 Aug 2021 Asked by moderately-sized-dreadmaw 26 Comments

As for the whole Gangster creature type thing, Minion and Mercenary could work for certain archetypes of them (underlings, hired goons, etc.) What do you think?

I agree there are takes on a gangster world where I could see those creature types working.

It represented creatures that were Minions.

'Bad' Cards in Limited Play

New 11 Aug 2021 Asked by ne4782 67 Comments

As a Limited player, I want to say how important the 'bad' cards are. The weak cards are needed when a draft has gone badly and you need playables – who among us hasn't been reduced to playing a Yoked Ox? They're needed to make the format work. The cards I hate opening are things like Minion of the Mighty which are clearly constructed plants, but it's disappointing to me that other players want to damage my preferred format because it doesn't help theirs.

Thanks for chiming in. It helps for people to hear things from other players.

Magic-Affiliated Battlebot Trivia

New 19 Sep 2020 Asked by tanknspank 46 Comments

It's my birthday! Any trivia on the MtG sponsored Battlebot Minion?

I think the person who built it was a Magic fan and came to us for sponsorship. It was a longtime ago though, so my memory is fuzzy. For those unaware, Battkebot was a show where people built robots to fight one another and Magic sponsored one of them.

Black Thrulls Mechanics

New 09 Mar 2020 Asked by a-wild-zebr 31 Comments

Are other black thrulls that sacrifice themselves for something other than mana still in colour pie?

We’re more likely to do death triggers than self sacrifice, but yeah, black still gets some self sacrifice for its minions.

Minions vs Beebles

Can you point out the success of Minions to try to get Beebles back in black border?

Minions are barely in black border as it is. That’s not going to help.

Eldrazi Utilization Feedback

New 05 Dec 2018 Asked by guyscap 46 Comments

If I may still question about your article about the Rabiah Scale, I recall you saying the Eldrazi-less sets about zendikar were more popular than the eldrazi ones. Would you consider that the eldrazi as a race were unpopular or that they could have been better utilized on another plane, like what has been done on Eldritch Moon?

I think three giant Eldrazi legendary creatures is awesome. An army of Eldrazi minions is less so.

Minion Type Usage

No. It’s not one we support much anymore. Sadly.

Terms Across Planes

Not and make the terms flavorful and easily accessible.

Legendary Minions Feasibility

New 02 Aug 2018 Asked by the-machine-orthodoxy 92 Comments

I have trouble imagining how a legendary minion could work, is this one of those situations where a kind of creature type doesn’t really work with having a legendary card?

Go watch “Despicable Me”. There are a bunch of specific, named Minions.

Minion Creature Types

If Minion is a class why do most, including Xantcha, not have race creature types?

Not every race has a corresponding creature type.
