Creature Type Classification

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by aalgot 3 Comments

Why can’t we just have a whole taxonomy of creature types, so chicken, penguin, and hawk are all unique types included in the “Bird” batch, and then we have which is itself included in the “reptile” batch together with dinosaur, Chameleon, and snake.

I don’t think we want that much batching.

Creature Types Consolidation

New 25 Jun 2024 Asked by fungustober 13 Comments

I'd like to voice my dislike of the paring down of some of the creature types, because I feel like differing viewpoints are good in game design and I've not really seen that many statements voiced in opposition to these changes. My view of it is that it strips out a lot of uniqueness of Magic as a setting. Other settings have humanoid lizards, but they don't have Viashino. Other settings have undersea-dwelling peoples, but they don't have Cephalids. Naga becoming Snake was completely understandable, and I think the justifications for it were valid. I do not think Viashino becoming Lizard or Cephalid becoming Octopus were remotely justified. On top of that, it creates some weird points, where you can see clearly crocodilian humanoids (the Viashino from Alara) now labeled as Lizards, which not only are separate types in Magic, they're not even closely related in real life (crocodiles are more closely related to birds and dinosaurs than lizards). I've seen a number of very loud people advocate for trimming all the "unnecessary" types in Magic out, but their proposals usually end up as "there should be about 20 creature types total." This is not only unsatisfactory from a game design standpoint--as it would make tribal decks a bit *too* easy to accomplish--but absolutely catastrophic from a flavor perspective as well. At that point, why not just have typelines be "TYPE1", "TYPE2", and so forth? Flavor and function have to work together, and sacrificing too much of either is a bad thing. Too little function, and the game becomes unplayable. Too little flavor, and the game becomes cold and sterile. This is not to say that trimming on creature types is a bad thing--I think Magic wouldn't be hurt by trimming on a few more creature types if you asked me--but just that I think the choice of creature types being trimmed is odd, to say the least. Why does a regularly printed creature type with new cards that were printed just earlier this year get the boot, and not something like trilobite, which has all of 5 cards, with a 4 year gap between the printing of the most recent one and the one before that? If this is to help tribal decks, why are there still one-off or two-off creature types being printed, like Varmint and Coyote?

We’re not getting rid of Viashino. They will continue to creatively exist. We will still refer to them in titles and flavor text as Viashino. All we’re doing is consolidating the creature types so that we’re consistent in how we use them. Magic has been treating animal humanoids this way (aka using the animal as the creature type) for two plus decades. All we’re doing is going back and fixing the few that got done before we adopted this policy back in the early days of Magic.

Hydra in Modern Horizons

New 05 Jun 2024 Asked by trifas 11 Comments

Mark, you said Dinosaurs couldn't be Green's iconic as you want to print them at Common, but MH3 just brought a Common Hydra. Is that a change in iconic's philosophy?

Modern Horizon sets do all sorts of offbeat things that aren’t the norm.

Stacking Creature Types Clarified

New 28 May 2024 Asked by bardeen1 42 Comments

ok Human Human was a hypothetical, let's say Allosaurus Shepherd + infinite mana to make something a Dinosaur an arbitrary amount of times. Do creature types stack?

You can’t be a Dinosaur more than once. You don’t stack the same creature type.

Unfinity Sticker Update

New 14 Apr 2024 Asked by nootnooter34 26 Comments

Hey Mark, i'm not sure if you're the right person to contact, but something's been bugging me for a while now.The Unfinity sticker sheet "Happy Dead Squirrel" was printed with an ability sticker incliding the text "{T}: add {2}" and has the updated oracle text "{T}: add {C}{C}", in line with other cards that previously added generic mana.In contrast, the Unfinity sticker sheet "Unglued Pea-Brained Dinosaur" was likewise printed with an ability sticker incliding the text "{T}: add {2}" but has not received the updated oracle text.Is there some reason for this? I know rule 106.10 makes this irrelevant for gameplay, but I still think it would be nice to have consistency.Kind regards, A concerned player

It’s just an oversight. Both should tap for CC.

Grouping Creature Types

New 08 Apr 2024 Asked by jonscreenshow 36 Comments

With creature types being grouped together like with Party and Outlaw, I imagine this trend will continue if received well. Do you think there is a limit on how many creature types could be grouped together at one? For example, if there was a grouping for "Reptiles" you realistically could include Lizard, Salamander, Turtle, Crocodile, Snake, Hyrda, Dinosaur, Basilisk, and Kavu. There might be some others I'm forgetting, but 9 seems like a lot. Do you think that the amount of possible creature types would prevent potential groupings from being made at all, or would some just be left out?

Our default rule is two to five items in a batch. Getting over that gets unwieldy, both to remember and to fit on the card.

Bloomburrow Sapience

New 02 Mar 2024 Asked by gamma-3 34 Comments

I think you misread someone's earlier ask about Bloomburrow. If, say, a dinosaur from Ixalan wandered through an omenpath onto Bloomburrow, would it then become sapient?

I do not know, but I don’t think Bloomburrow grants sapience.

Ixalan Crossover Missed

New 12 Feb 2024 Asked by rowanalpha 43 Comments

With the experience of Onslaught and Lorwyn, why didn’t Ixalan have “crossover” cards between the different factions? Even without changeling, I was surprised there weren’t a few cards like a Vampire Pirate creature or a Dinosaur that made some Merfolk tokens.

The creative team asked us not to do it. With 20/20 hindsight, the set needed more glue, so I do wish we’d either push back harder or found another solution.

Feedback on MKM Gameplay

New 10 Feb 2024 Asked by defenderofsoma 47 Comments

I've only played 3 sealed and 1 draft on Arena, but for reasons I don't totally understand, I'm not enjoying MKM. I can't put my finger on it. The flavor seems fantastic. I love that it's a new theme, and it seems to hit all the right notes, flavor-wise. But it's really hard for me to understand strategic options - there are so many face down cards that I can't ever tell what's going to happen, I can't seem to keep track of which cards can't block (suspected), I keep confusing equipped artifacts for enchantments, and I get timeouts when I'm actually trying to do something but the facedown cards keep showing pop-up info instead of letting me click. I keep making mistakes I don't usually make. It may be an Arena issue, I'll have to see what it's like to play tabletop. I was excited about this set. I like when you try out new themes. I'm 50 and I've played for all of my adult life, so it's odd to me that I'm struggling with board comprehension. It's almost the opposite from LCI - I was less excited about that set mostly because I just thought the underground theme would've been better served by not being mashed up with dinosaurs and Ixalan, underground dinos didn't really resonate for me - but then I played a bunch (tabletop) and thought it was surprisingly fun gameplay. Huh. Dunno if this is useful feedback for you. I'm a big fan and will continue to try out all the new sets. This one just isn't clicking for me as much as I thought it would. It could be that the complexity is high and so it gets more fun as you start memorizing the cards, but the on-ramping is rough, and I say that even having gone undefeated with my first sealed.

I always appreciate honest feedback. One of the reasons that we keep the pendulum moving is to make different types of sets, so there will be ones that speak to any one player more than others. I do take the complexity note to heart. It’s something we’ve been talking about.I would try this set in tabletop to see if that plays differently for you.

Detective Subtype Strategy

New 30 Jan 2024 Asked by slimegirl-pseudopod 48 Comments

I know you said that is was a conscious choice not to errata old cards to give them the detective subtype, but this feels like a mistake given how many times it has happened for other subtypes, such as phyrexian, warlock, and dinosaur. And given how it is often said to be a mistake to go against player's perception, now that detective is a subtype, it will likely surprise players when cards like Dogged Detective did not recieve the new type.

We introduce new creature types all the time. The vast majority of the time when we do it, we don’t errata old cards. Yes, people remember us making a change more than they remember us not making a change, but that’s just human nature, focusing more on change than continuity.

Friends as Commanders

New 22 Jan 2024 Asked by tumblacct 21 Comments

Re: Friends as Commanders, for Monica I'd do Butterbur, Bree Innkeeper, she creates food and plays host to the other characters (I believe Monica is 'The Apartment's' most consistent occupant on the show). For Ross, I have Gavi, Nest Warden: creates Dinosaurs, is red (Ross has a small chaos streak) and the cycling cost reduction represents his pursuit of knowledge.

Choosing Set Themes

New 19 Jan 2024 Asked by su92 24 Comments

When you're planning a typal theme for a set, why do you sometimes choose types that are unlikely to see many future cards much less support (Citizens, Detectives) as opposed to more generic ones (Dinosaurs, Faeries)?

It’s a better fit for the set. We do plenty of generic ones.

Dinosaur actually premiered as a creature type in Ice Age. We then errataed it, only to change it back when Ixalan came out. Happy Birthday!

Ixalan's Factional Themes

New 30 Nov 2023 Asked by ragnar-viking 33 Comments

While I absolutely love the Lost Caverns of Ixalan and its additions to the world, I would be sad if our third visit to Ixalan (whenever that'll be) drops the factional typal theme altogether. I get that original Ixalan block didn't do great but I'd argue it wasn't the factional typal theme that dragged down the block but rather myriad of other issues. I feel like the popularity of the commander decks for Lost Caverns of Ixalan supports that the factional typal theme is a very beloved aspect.

I don’t expect to visit Ixalan without seeing Dinosaurs, Pirates, Vampires, and Merfolk. I also expect some light typal themes. I don’t think they’ll be much more than one draft archetype that’s typal though.

Defender on Eggs

New 27 Nov 2023 Asked by ragnar-viking 26 Comments

I've loved the "The Lost Caverns of Ixalan" both main set and the commander decks, my thanks to everyone. However I found it unusual that both the Egg tokens of "Palani's Hatcher" and the card "Dinosaur Egg" are missing the defender keyword that are commonly seen on eggs. Any particular reasons why defender didn't appear for these Eggs?

We try not to put defender on cards where it isn’t needed.

Universes Within Art Query

Generally Universes Within reprints have stayed in our standard planes, but if you were reprinting something like Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, are the Un-planes fair game for the art?

I don’t know the philosophy on Magic withing reworks. My gut is they’ll stick to the main multiverse.
