Love for Armored Armadillo

High-fives to the designers of Armored Armadillo, after making it a 12/7 it's become my favorite draft chaff in the limited environment

High fives to be granted.

Sealed Play Enjoyment

New 13 Apr 2024 Asked by cthulhusaurusrex 39 Comments

Hey Mark, just got back from a prerelease (my first prerelease since Dominaria!) and I had a great time. I really enjoyed the spree cards in sealed, I love the way the deserts that deal 1 to target opponent worked as mana fixing off of cards that searched for them (Spinewoods Armadillo especially, that card was super fin) and count for committing a crime, commit a crime itself made for some interesting deck building decisions, and mounts were a nice way to unstick boards full of creatures.I was even sceptical about all the extra cards filling slots (big score, special guests, and breaking news), but I found that it was exciting to see old cards that I think fondly of (I got to see murder, voidslime, etc. and I found that the designs look much better to me in person than it did as spoilers) as well as pull some fun new cards from the big score. Overall I think the set felt great to play with in sealed and I had an awesome time, high fives all around!

High fives shall be applied. I’m happy you had such a good time.

Armadillos and Folklore

New 11 Apr 2024 Asked by submergedforgottencladogram 41 Comments

Mark, I love OTJ, and how it uses the fauna, flora and folklore of North America to feel 'western'. Armadillos, Mountain Bighorn Sheep, Prairie Dogs, Buzzards, Coyotes, Roadrunners, Gila Monsters, Wolverines, Porcupines, Tumbleweeds (nevermind the Tumblewaggs), Beavers, Possums, Badgers, a knight riding a Moose, a battalion of various Cactus-folk and a Magic version of Paul Bunyan and his Blue Ox. Its like a roadtrip from my childhood through Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and western Texas was condensed into a set, even the panning for gold at a tourist trap! All I'm left wondering is when can we return so we can get a card inspired by John Henry, the steel-driving man, and maybe an ornery bison or two.

Please dole out copious high fives to those who had the idea that this set needs a bunch of critters from the southwest and the Rocky Mountains to feel like a western setting.

High fives shall be applied.

I’ll add it to the “short list”.

Questioning Green/White Hybrid

I’m skeptical we’d do faux lifelink in green/white hybrid.
Armadillo cloak?

No.

Fossil Record as Card Source

New 25 Dec 2021 Asked by submergedforgottencladogram 59 Comments

Well, the fossil record has an endless bevy of wonderful oddities that would look cool on a Magic card! Here's a few non-dinosaurs. The largest pterosaurs, the azhdarchids, were predatory giraffes with 40-foot wingspans. South America's fossil record is really weird, with car-sized armadillos, elephant-sized sloths, who dug enormous tunnels with their claws, and the giant flightless 'terror birds'. And y'all have yet to put a plesiosaur or a mosasaur on a card, except for poor pelagosaur!

Interesting suggestions.

Armadillo Trivia

New 22 Jun 2017 Asked by armadillosandthings 65 Comments

Hi Mark, it's my birthday today. Do you have any trivia about Armadillos in Magic?

Armadillo Cloak got kind of a silly name because the person doing the concept of at the time assumed it couldn’t be powerful as it was a creature aura. He later said he would have done it differently if he knew how much it was going to get played.Happy Birthday!

Armadillo Cloak Text

New 17 Mar 2015 Asked by icecreammac 55 Comments

Why doesn't the oracle text for Armadillo Cloak say that the enchanted creature has trample and lifelink? Isn't that exactly what the card does?

No, if you put it on your opponent’s creature, you gain life when it deals damage not your opponent which is what would happen if it was lifelink.

NERF Godsend Hope

New 11 Jul 2014 Asked by aegisaglow-deactivated20181219 36 Comments

Any chance of a NERF Godsend? (Actually, thinking about this, I just realized that the Magic apparel I want most is an Armadillo Cloak hoodie.)

If the axe does well, there’s hope. By the way, if you can’t get to San Diego, but are eyeing Garruk’s NERF axe, check out this link about how you can win one: http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/win-ultimate-trophy-2014-06-22

Flavorful Card Desires

New 17 May 2014 Asked by agahins 25 Comments

You are a good designer, but i loved when you did the flavortexts in the odyssey block. You don´t need to stop making awsome cards, but can you do some werebears, giant gorillas and armadillo cloak. I miss the good old magic puns.

I miss them too.

Card Errata Explained

New 04 Oct 2013 Asked by greenpm33 24 Comments

Why is it that Loxodon Warhammer has been errated to give likelink, but Armadillo Cloak hasn't?

Because Armadillo Cloak can be put onto opponent’s creatures and Loxodon Warhammer, as an equipment cannot (well, not easily). Giving Armadillo Cloak lifelink would functionally change the card. Now you can put Armadillo Cloak on an opponent’s creature to stop the damage (because you gain the life not the creature’s controller). If we changed it to lifelink, you could not.

Armadillo Cloak Origins

New 13 Aug 2013 Asked by tokensquirrel 10 Comments

Armadillo Cloak is one of my favorite Magic cards ever. Could you tell me who designed it and who's responsible for the amusing flavor text?

I designed it. I’m not sure who wrote the flavor text.

Reprints vs New Versions

New 30 Jun 2013 Asked by fezzhead 7 Comments

What are the most common reasons why old cards get newer versions rather than straight reprints? For example, Unflinching Courage vs. Armadillo Cloak.

There are a variety of reasons. Unflinching Courage was us wanting to put lifelink on the card and Armadillo Cloak had something close to lifelink but not exactly lifelink.

Warhammer Function Change

New 13 May 2013 Asked by affinityforanime 19 Comments

No Mark, sorry, but you are mistaken on this one. Loxodon Warhammer was functionally changed by giving it lifelink. The original print of Loxodon Warhammer in Mirrodin had a triggered effect that works like Spirit Link. It even mattered more in some cases when the opponent "stole" it through Magnetic Theft and similar effects. This shows WotC has a conflicting policy on reprints and gives leverage to the case that Armadillo Cloak could have been printed in GTC with lifelink.

The change of Loxodon Warhammer is considered a mistake.

Lifelink Clarification

New 07 May 2013 Asked by mtgraptor 11 Comments

Mark stop being ignorant about the lifelink change! Just read the Daybreak Coronet printed version and the updated oracle text. And you will see it was changed.

I didn’t say lifelink was never changed. I said lifelink was never “spirit link” (aka it could never be put onto the opponent’s creature and gain you life for the damage). “Spirit link” is the ability on Armadillo Cloak.

Lifelink and Functional Errata

New 07 May 2013 Asked by ingenkhoobor 4 Comments

It doesn't seem fair to say that you don't do functional errata anymore. When "lifelink" was created, you applied it to all cards that had the triggered lifegain ability, including Armadillo Cloak. You then changed what the keyword meant, which is functional errata. Why doesn't this act as "functional errata" you "don't do," anymore?

Armadillo Cloak could be put onto the opponent’s creature to basically stop it from damaging you (yes, you lost and gained the same amount of life). Lifelink has never done that.

No Armadillo Cloak Errata

New 06 May 2013 Asked by themastah 8 Comments

Why not reprint Armadillo Cloak and errata it to have lifelink, like you did with Loxodon Warhammer?

Because we no longer do functional errata (aka changing how the card functions with errata).

Unflinching Courage Origin

New 06 May 2013 Asked by spectrallynx 14 Comments

Was Unflinching Courage ever just Armadillo Cloak in the file?

Yes, it was. It was even about to get art for Armadillo Cloak when Aaron Forsythe pointed out that we had to change it because Armadillo Cloak doesn’t actually have lifelink but a similar ability.
