Outlaws vs Party Mechanic

New 01 Apr 2024 Asked by oooblyjooblies96 45 Comments

Outlaws (and the oft-suggested 'Sea monsters' batching) seem like a great hit. In retrospect, do you think that - with appropriate modifications to the rest of the set accordingly - Party in ZNR would have been better received as say, 'Party members (Clerics, Rogues, Warriors and Wizards are party members)'?

Party needed you to have one of each which is slightly different than batching.

Copy Effects Rule

New 29 Mar 2024 Asked by cogito-ergo-sam 49 Comments

Hey Mark, in your first article on OTJ you say "We changed the rules last year about how copy effects work with permanent spells. Now, if you copy a permanent spell, you get a token that's a copy."I'd like to point out that this originally happened in ZNR in 2020, though some of the wording changed in CLB in 2022. (The relevant rules are 111.12, 608.3f and 707.10f; 608.3f is the only one that has been reworded)Also, I love this rule. I have an Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief commander deck about mutating over Ivy, copying her and getting more copies of mutate creatures.

Time flies. It seemed like only a year ago.

Rule Change Timing

New 27 Mar 2024 Asked by delicateturtleangel 27 Comments

Hi Mark!Regarding Doubling Down, in yesterday's article, you say that was allowed by last year's rule change. That rule change actually happened with Lithoform Engine in Zendikar Rising (September 2020), that was 3 and a half years ago 😲On the other end, I know you work on sets almost 3 years ahead of release, so that would mean that when you were working on OTJ, at that point it would have been about a year since the rule change became public. Now the question is this:Did you state "last year" because that was true when you wrote the article (i.e. it was written well in advance), OR is working so far ahead simply making it hard to keep track of when changes were made?

Just a bad memory. I should have double-checked.

Zendikar Rising Mechanic

New 15 Feb 2024 Asked by clomethegnome 27 Comments

Did R&D consider Zendikar Rising a typal set a la Ixalan or Lorwyn? I certainly did and thought party was really interesting way to have typal 'glue' that wasn't changelings or dual type creatures.

Party is considered a typal theme.

Return Set Opinions

New 22 Nov 2023 Asked by cassiesuccubus 29 Comments

I apologize if the portion of my last ask about return sets came off as wanting to deny other people of what they like. That was not intent. Rather, I was under the impression that the consensus were that Midnight Vows and Zendikar Rising were kinda boring. Your yourself bring up in your State of Design article that the sets did not innovate enough. So I always assumed those sets were made safe to please the higher ups, not the players. Was I mistaken?

You were. There’s a split in the audience about whether or not returns should revisit what made the world fun last time versus pushing in new directions. Obviously, we like to find a happy medium, but there are different audiences that want different things.

Set Design Preferences

New 21 Nov 2023 Asked by cassiesuccubus 42 Comments

Hi Mark. Can I ask for more return set like Shadows of Innistrad and Lost Cavern of Ixalan, which adds one big new element that makes the set it's own thing (a shift to cosmic horror, going underground), and less like Midnight Hunt/Crimson Vow or Zendikar Rising, which are just "here's more of the 1st set"?

We do a mix because there are people that like each. So yes, we’ll do more of the thing you like, but no, we won’t stop doing the thing you don’t like.

Backdrop vs. Rebuild Sets

New 08 Nov 2023 Asked by thunderweb 61 Comments

I heard Neon Dynasty wasn't confirmed to be on Kamigawa at the beginning (even though you wanted to.)Does it make NEO a backdrop set as well? If not, what makes a return set (such as THB, ZNR, DMU, BRO, ONE, and WOE) a "non-backdrop set"?

NEO is more a rebuild than a backdrop set. THB, ZNR, DMU, ONE, and WOE all keep the same mechanical core. BRO is the closest to a backdrop set in that Dominaria was more a setting than a mechanical core. The odd part is Brothers’ War mechanical core was copied from Antiquities which was set on Dominaria.

Set Boosters Analysis

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by qanadhar 28 Comments

Hi Mark. Zendikar Rising came out in September 2020, in the heart of the pandemic when in person limited play was effectively non-existent and would be for nearly 2 more years. Did the analysts take that massive warping factor into consideration as to why Set Boosters outsold Draft Boosters?Seems like a pretty significant external factor to me.That said, I stopped buying draft boosters to crack and only play in-store, so have no need to acquire boxes for at home draft, so this change is no impact personally, but I think the pandemic may have skewed the data too much to support such a significant change.

The downward trend of draft boosters have gotten worse over time, not better. The data fights against this being a pandemic effect.

Creature Type Batching

New 15 Oct 2023 Asked by su92 37 Comments

Do you think we'll see batching for a creature type + something that isn't a creature (like "Wizard, instant or sorcery" from Zendikar Rising) again?

I do.

Enemy Colors Land Cycle

New 28 Aug 2023 Asked by schienamento 41 Comments

What prompted another enemy colors creature land cycle, before another allies colors one? Not that I'm complaining, since I think that enemy colors still need more support to be on pair with allies.

Dual lands are basically play design’s call. Vision/set design will occasionally come up with a new dual land design like the MDFC ones in Zendikar Rising, but play design will pick whether they’re ally or enemy.

Double-Faced Cards Usage

New 10 Apr 2023 Asked by forestd3w 47 Comments

Are two-faced cards decidous now? I might be biased because of the Zendikar Rising to Strixhaven, but it feels like we have been getting a lot recently.

DFCs are deciduous.

Archetype Legendary Creatures

New 26 Jan 2023 Asked by madeahippo-blog 34 Comments

Hey Mark, just wanted to say again that like with Zendikar Rising I really love the new rare legendary creatures that coincide with each draft archetype in All Will Be One. Especially seeing so many of them are returning characters. I would like request more of this in the future please!

You’re in luck. : )

Dominaria Remastered Draft

New 14 Jan 2023 Asked by the-shanpai 44 Comments

Just left my LGS after having a great time drafting Dominaria Remastered. As someone who started playing when Zendikar Rising was released the vibe in the room was a mix of nostalgia and excitement from both new and old players. And someone ripping a foil old border Force of Will made everyone cheer.

Thanks for sharing.

Equipment Keyword Consideration

New 14 Nov 2022 Asked by j-waffles 25 Comments

Was it ever considered to keyword the “when this enters, attach it” that all the equipment in Zendikar Rising have?

There hasn’t been any discussion to do it in meetings I’ve been in.

Sagas Usage Increase

New 11 Nov 2022 Asked by wildcardgamez 57 Comments

After 10 months of watching this blog and asking questions, I'd like to invoke birthday trivia! My favorite card type is sagas, and I try to fit some into every deck I make. I watch a lot of your DTWs, and one thing I remembered was that sets like ELD, ZNR, and STX also had pushes for sagas in them but they didn't get too far. Is there anything you can say about those? If not, some trivia on the foretell mechanic would suffice.

We liked Sagas, but were worried about making them too often, so we limited how often we used them. As time has gone by and it’s clear the audience is comfortable with us doing more of them, we’ve upped how often they get used. The fact that so many sets wanted to use them was very telling though.Happy Birthday!

Faction Color Dynamics

New 29 Sep 2022 Asked by rolscane 20 Comments

Can the ZNR class structure work for factions? IE have each of four colors be primary/secondary/tertiary on a faction and one color that's tertiary in each faction.

Potentially, but it has a bunch of limited issues that would have to be solved.

Usage of Party Types

New 14 Sep 2022 Asked by titania776 25 Comments

Now that ZNR has rotated out of standard are the party creature types going to be used less often?

The party creature types happen to be things we normally use a lot regardless of party existing, so while there might be individual cases of a tournament card not being a party type, it won’t be a big change.

Snap-on Equipment Popularity

New 07 Sep 2022 Asked by gring-mushroomspores 50 Comments

Follow-up to the ZNR equipment question: Thr fact that they equip on ETB was one of my absolute favourite things about recent equipments. I love the gameplay of "expensive equip cost, but the first one's free". It has lead me to play quite a few of them in my decks and I'd love to see ot return. High five to Eric!

Snap-on equipment has been popular. I’ll high five Erik.

Birthday Cliffhaven Trivia

New 07 Sep 2022 Asked by sharkwifedotcom 49 Comments

Hello mark! It's my birthday today, so I'd like to request some birthday trivia about my favorite card, cliffhaven kitesail (if you've got any). Thanks :)

All the equipment in Zendikar Rising automatically attach to a creature when they enter the battlefield because Erik feels equipment should do that. Happy Birthday!

Historic and Synergy

New 25 Aug 2022 Asked by thestoreman 43 Comments

Hi Mark, I don't get something. Why would Historic support in Dominaria United being synergistic with the artifact theme in Brother's War be a bad thing? Wasn't a desire for a stronger mechanical through-line for the year one of the lessons you mentioned about sets since Zendikar Rising?

The problem was it might be too synergistic. If historic gets set at the wrong level, Brothers’ War might have to make its cards weaker to keep things from breaking.
