Potential for Eternal Un-Reprints

New 22 Jul 2024 Asked by theothin 5 Comments

Could suitable un-cards get eternal "un-reprints"? That is, using a new name but identical abilities, like was the plan for Tammy, Power Gamer, and using a variant on Universes Within's "=SLD" label to mark that the cards are equivalent for casual games despite having different tournament legality. Would that be viable?

We clearly can make the same cards with a new name (if the card works within the rules). I’m more skeptical we’d use the Universe’s Within “same card” tech.

Player Types Explanation

New 29 May 2024 Asked by windingmossyways 41 Comments

I was listening to some of the podcasts you put out leading up to Thunder Junction release and you mention types of players as "johnny" or "jenny" or "spike" and I was curious what you meant by that. I thought I understood from context when you were talking about "spikey" decks but then I heard the others and didn't feel sure. Are these players in the design team or pros that players are meant to be familiar with or something?

Here’s my article from the topic in 2006. Note I hadn’t yet added the female names for Timmy (Tammy) and Johnny (Jenny). (Spike is unisex.):

Card Games Foster Growth

New 27 May 2024 Asked by boymeetsanime 7 Comments

Hi Mark! I wanted to give my own thanks to you and the card game I love so dearly. When I was 16, friendless and hopelessly autistic without realising it, a friend of my sister saw me walking down the street and gave me a tupperware box of Magic cards that he was about to throw away (mostly goblins from 10th Edition).

I went to my LGS to learn how to play the game and found not only a love for the game, but a creative outlet, a great group of friends, and the confidence I needed to grow as a person.

I was hired to run their Magic events and eventually worked my way up to manager/"The Card Guy" and some of my happiest life moments, including finding an equal passion for reading DC comics, were made during my decade of working there.

I can only imagine where I would be if I hadn't gone to my LGS to learn Magic that day, but I know I can't imagine my life without it, so thank you to everyone who helped make, and continues to make, such a wonderful game.

P.S. the first booster I ever opened was Avaycn Restored and after being blown away by Vorstclaw I've been a Timmy ever since!

Thanks for sharing.

Trivia on Magic's Psychology

New 22 Apr 2024 Asked by badgerbattalion 36 Comments

Hey Mark, I’d love some birthday Trivia on psychology or philosophy in magic!

The Timmy/Tammy, Johnny/Jenny, and Spike psychographics are based upon a tool used in advertising to understand the psychology of a brand’s users. I created the psychographics as a way for the designers to think about why players played certain cards. Part of my fascination with psychology comes from my mom who’s a psychologist.Happy Birthday!

Preference for Villain Sets

New 28 Mar 2024 Asked by skagerrakgodofdarkness 33 Comments

I am usually a big fan of the worldbuilding and story telling, but can I say I would have MUCH preferred just a set full of villains without canonically putting them on the same plane? It feels like it both waters down the Wild West theme and makes little creative sense. I guess what I’m asking for is more Origins style sets that are more focused than Core Sets but aren’t all set on one world? Maybe Anthology sets could be a name for them?

Part of the omenpath change was to allow us to do this type of showcase set, but yes, I hear what you (and others) are saying. This is a rare case where Timmy/Tammy and Vorthos butt up against one another.

Player Psychographics

New 19 Mar 2024 Asked by updateseventually 28 Comments

Is figuring out whether I’m a Tammy/Jenny/Spike useful for me as a player or is it more of a game design concept?

The psychographics are more used as a design tool, but many people enjoy self-discovery.

Psychographics Analysis

New 02 Mar 2024 Asked by estufe 20 Comments

I hope you’re doing well, Mark. I study the Enneagram of personality and I thought you’d find this interesting. I believe your psychographics are analogous with what we call the instinctual drives: Tammy the “self-preservation” drive; Jenny the “one-to-one” drive; and Spike the “social” drive. (The names of the drives might be slightly counterintuitive to how they manifest in behavior, e.g., social types are often concerned about status.)

Interesting.

Psychographics in Games

New 25 Jan 2024 Asked by stormtide-leviathan 39 Comments

I'm trying to understand the psychographs better by thinking of them in terms of other games. My thought is, in the context of scrabble: Tammies are trying to do something cool, have a big play that gets them lots of points, and even if they don't win they'll be content with that. Jennies are likely to be more interested in the words themselves, and show off with creative words. Spikes are the most focused on using their tiles shrewdly, getting the maximum points they can. This seem accurate?

That is correct. Timmy/Tammy wants to experience something.Jenny/Johnny wants to express something. Spike wants to prove something.

Social Player Archetype

New 19 Jan 2024 Asked by shm128iii 39 Comments

Which of the Player Archetypes would "Plays Magic for the social aspect" fall under? Or is that something not covered by any of the archetypes since it's something outside the game itself?

That’s Timmy/Tammy. They’re driven by experiences, which includes social experiences.

Playerbase Psychographics

New 13 Dec 2023 Asked by lonelymmo 51 Comments

Do you think the Tammy, Jenny, Spike psychographic triangle is complete or do you think it can be added onto with greater understanding of the playerbase? Thank you for all your writing on game design.

Twenty-eight years in, I haven’t found a new psychographic.

Legendary Commander Concern

New 24 Oct 2023 Asked by sjk9000 82 Comments

First, I want to say that "Throne of the Grim Captain" is a cool card that tickles both the Johnny and Timmy parts of my brain in just the right ways. Kudos to whoever designed it.However, I think it was a mistake to tease the type line "Legendary Creature - Skeleton Spirit Pirate" when the card in question can't actually be used as a Commander. There's always going to be some risk of disappointment involved when teasing cards, but I think "don't tease Legendary type lines that can't be used as a commander" is a low bar to clear.I mainly say this because it is a bit sad to see so many people down on such a cool card.

Let me ask everyone here. I have a cool creature type line that’s legendary, but can’t be played as a commander. Should I not include it in my teaser?

Player Types Explained

New 14 Jul 2023 Asked by king-of-masks-deactivated202307 40 Comments

Since there's three out of Spike/Timmy/Johnny, why are there only two for Vorthos/Melvin? Or are there supposed to be 5 for all the magic colors?

The first are psychographics. The second are aesthetic profiles. They are different things, so they exist in different number. Why are there three basic silverware, but just two types of spices (salt and pepper) in shakers on the table? : )

Gamer Archetype Names

New 19 May 2023 Asked by spotlight-stageright 63 Comments

So we have Timmy, the green gamer who loves putting big stuff on the battlefield, Johnny, the blue gamer who lives for cool and interesting combos, Spike, the black gamer who wants to win as fast as possible, and Vorthos, the red gamer who cares about the theming and lore of a character/place/etc. What will the white gamer be called, and what will they care about, if we even get a final gamer in the cycle?

Timmy/Tammy, Johnny/Jenny, and Spike are the three psychographics. The two aesthetic profiles are Vorthos and Mel. Mel does like things orderly. : )

Griefers in Psychographics

New 12 May 2023 Asked by pascal314 28 Comments

Hi Mark. You mentioned that griefers were a subset of Timmy/Tammy. Griefers aren't mentioned in your article "Timmy, Johnny, and Spike Revisited", so I was curious if there were any other subsets of the psychographic profiles that R&D has names for.

Griefers can show up in all three psychographics. They show up most often in Timmy/Tammy.

Griefer Player Types

New 11 May 2023 Asked by eeeee-eeeeeeee 36 Comments

Just out of curiosity, why are griefers considered a subset of Timmy/Tammy? Because one could argue that something like “I’m gonna build a deck specially designed to create the worst playing experience I can possibly imagine” ala copying Sharazhad a ton of times or stealing every lands better reflects the self expression of Johnny/Jenny

There are Johnny/Jenny Griefers and Spike Griefers. The vast majority tend to be Tammy/Timmy though as the enjoy the experience of griefing.

Griefer Card Design

New 11 May 2023 Asked by blazinjsin 46 Comments

"Nick is just a subset of Timmy and Tammy. R&D refers to that subtype as a Griefer." I don't think enough cards are made with griefers in mind.

That depends who you ask. : )For griefers, no.

Nick Archetype Discussion

New 10 May 2023 Asked by gladidiedpoppunk 104 Comments

I think WOTC needs to acknowledge another Player Archtype, other than Johnny, Timmy, and Spike.
This player's name is Nick.
Nick is a contrarian. Who only likes things other players dislike.
Classic Nick cards:ShahrazadHumilityArmageddon Stasis
Nick loves banding, and flanking, and regenerates.
I think R&D needs to make more Nick cards

Nick is just a subset of Timmy and Tammy. R&D refers to that subtype as a Griefer.

Unstable vs Unfinity

New 12 Mar 2023 Asked by armeizh 59 Comments

Hi Mark, yesterday we drafted a stashed box of Unstable. It involved "As Luck Would Have It" as high as 61 counters; a Five-Fingers Discount on Rules Lawyer to turn a game around and win at a negative life total; round 1 getting overtime because one player had to play two games at once due to Better Than One; and a player without a board state topdecking Over My Dead Bodies for a massive attack that left the opponent just one life short of lethal, fitting for a horror villain's last lunge. All in all a good time for everyone, and for what it's worth it confirmed that I liked Unstable more than Unfinity. Contraptions play better than stickers, and the "silly themes" feel more scattered in Unfinity, which makes the draft a bit more daunting as it's harder to get a feel for whether your deck will "get there" in terms of playability. The puns and flavour and individual cards are still solid, though! I just enjoy Unstable more.

I think Attractions are the closer thing to compare Contraptions to. Which you prefer depends on how much you enjoy planning ahead. Contraptions are Spike-ier and Attractions are Timmy/Tammy-ier.I’m glad you enjoy Unstable. I spent a lot of time on that too, and am always happy to hear people enjoying it. Stickers ended up being more polarizing than I expected. Part of it was logistical issues that we didn’t have a lot of control over.

Battle Mechanic

New 12 Mar 2023 Asked by jonpaulcardenas 40 Comments

With Battle maybe debuting in MOM, are you more excited for certain types of players to get it like Timmy, Johnny, and Spike? Or certain formats to get it, like Commander, limmited, and competitive? Or do you think it will be hit to almost all kinds of players and formats?

I promise I will talk all about battles when it’s time to talk about them.
