Devotion Variant Possibility

New 26 Jul 2024 Asked by raytyger 8 Comments

Do you think there could ever be a devotion variant that cared in some capacity about mana symbols in cards in your graveyard?

Chroma could do that. If we did devotion out of the graveyard it would have an additional word, something like grave devotion.

Black Spell Control Mechanisms

New 25 Jul 2024 Asked by irlnautica 5 Comments

Would a black spell or effect that lets you take control of a permanent be an acceptable bend? I know taking control is usually blue or red, but it doesn't feel like a break because black can already cast other players' spells.

We let black mess with other people’s stuff, but more often from the graveyard or their library.

Theme Differences in Cards

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by thornthallid 3 Comments

Do you know why Maevolent Rumble reveals the top 4 cards, you choose a permanent, and put the rest in the graveyard, whereas Cache Grab mills 4, then returns a permanent to hand?

They’re in different sets where each execution plays into the themes of that set.

Usage of Colorless Creatures

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by gus-goose 13 Comments

Why is it that so many sets have a colorless creature that can put cards from graveyards on the bottom of libraries? These cards almost never make the cut in my limited decks and it’s an effect that almost never becomes relevant in games. Is there a purpose I’m missing?

It’s usually an answer to graveyard strategies the opponent is using.

Mechanics - Old vs New

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by misenaive-blog 1 Comments

Hey Mark, just wanted to say that I'm a big fan of graveyard mechanics and seeing Threshold return in Bloomburrow as well as Delirium in Duskmourn has made me really happy. I would like to ask how do you balance using returning mechanics vs creating new ones when designing sets in completely new planes.

If an old mechanic will accomplish what we need, we try to use the old mechanic, but there are a lot of factors that can make us want to use something new instead.

Consideration for Raccoon Mechanic

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 2 Comments

Raccoons eat garbage so was there any consideration for the raccoon mechanic to be something about the graveyard?

We talked about it, but Squirrels being in black/green just made it a better mechanical fit.

Evolution of Squirrels' Color Identity

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by stormcrow13 36 Comments

Do you know how squirrels became BG? Not just for Bloomburrow but over the years

They started green. I made the first black one in Unstable to match the flavor of the card. It evolved from there. Being black/green allows them to interact with the graveyard which has allowed a lot of interesting design space.

Missing Titan Text Explanation

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by dullwitandravens 3 Comments

Is there a reason why you seem to no longer print cards with the "when this is put into your graveyard, shuffle yard into library" text from the original elldrazi titans? It feels like a major part of their identity to me, and i was a bit sad to see that none of the titans in MH3 had it.

It doesn’t play well.

Mechanic of Creature Tokens

New 02 Jul 2024 Asked by old-men123456789 22 Comments

Why don’t creature tokens stay in the graveyard when they die? Would the design team ever consider making a card that lets creature tokens stay in the graveyard when they die?

It causes a lot of wonkiness with the rules. Un-sets have you covered though:

Advice On Deck Building

New 21 Jun 2024 Asked by obazervazi 34 Comments

To the Johnny who says best-in-slot commanders make deck building too easy: If you still want that challenge, try building your deck in the wrong colors. Mono-white landfall, boros graveyard, gruul artifacts, and such are all very fun and challenging to build, and they have more potential than one would expect in the hands of an experienced player.

A fine piece of advice.

Perception on Commanders' Strength

New 20 Jun 2024 Asked by j-waffles 56 Comments

Hey mark, long time reader, also long time asker. I like a challenge when deckbuilding. When I first found out about your psychographics, I thought “woah! it even have the same name as me!” (John). Commander helps tickle that itch for me, because I can start off with a dumb premise and try to make that concept as best I can, and since it’s not a competitive format, I know that there will always be SOMEONE with a deck on a similar power level, however bad that terrible deck idea ends up being. This brings me to a qualm that I personally have, and have seen purely anecdotal evidence that other people have too.It feels kinda lame when you guys make a commander that’s just “this is the best commander for X”. More and more we’re getting legends where they’re just the *correct* choice. If I want to build a sultai graveyard deck, Muldrotha is the answer. Nothing tops it, and I doubt anything every will top it. And that’s just one archetype. 5 color sagas? Bombadil. Snow? Jorn and Isu. Flash tribal? Nymris. Sure there are other cards that can be the commander, but you can say that about anything. Sure, I COULD make a Rakdos exile deck with Pavel Maliki in the command zone, but that’s just objectively wrong. The commander is always gonna be prosper. My point is that it’s getting harder and harder to say “how do I make this work” when you’re just handing us the blueprints and all the parts with a step by step instruction booklet on what to do.To be fair, many archetypes have so much innate complexity to them and have reached a critical mass of options where it’s impossible to tell what the “best” option is, as there are so many different facets and roads to go down. Orzhov aristocrats and mono-green stompy are easy examples. But the fact that it isn’t always the case doesn’t change the fact that happens a lot. I’m sure I’m not the only one that feels this way, but I’m also sure that if it was a majority opinion in the community y’all wouldn’t be doing it this much. I just want to know if you have anything to say about this perception that I and many others hold. Thank you for all you do in magic, I hope you respond.

One of the most common requests I get here on the blog is “make this color combination Commander for this particular theme”. Eventually, for some of them, we find an opportunity to make it. We don’t know when that opportunity will arise again. We shouldn’t try to make the best Commander we can for that slot? If it’s too weak, players will just complain and ask we make another one. The reality is a lot of players want prescriptive answers, and there’s no way to make them for the players that want them and not for the players that don’t. The idea is that players who want to do something different have access to the history of Magic to find less obvious answers.

White Ability Restrictions

New 20 Jun 2024 Asked by nabistay 23 Comments

Could white get "everyone shuffle their graveyard into their library", and if not, what would the philosophical reason not?

No, it’s not a white ability. Mechanics are isolated into colors to make the game play better, not because we couldn’t come up with a way to justify it philosophically.

Exiled Card Handling

New 17 Jun 2024 Asked by blind42-blog 8 Comments

"we shouldn't [allow casting exiled cards]"What about putting exiled cards into your graveyard or shuffling them back into your library? Is there a sufficient number of extra steps or hoops to jump through to get your cards back from exile?

For me, no. Exile is an important tool to permanent get rid of cards. If we don’t want to permanently get rid of them, we can just destroy them.

Black Graveyard Reanimation

New 15 Jun 2024 Asked by jaymz613 0 Comments

Hey MarkI've noticed Black returning creatures from the graveyard to the battlefield is most of the time limited to just your own graveyard. Whats the reasoning to not always letting you target creatures in any graveyard as the default option? Seems like it would make games more interesting. Thanks!

We want to be careful how often we make cards that discourage the opponent from playing big, exciting cards, so the default for reanimation is your graveyard.

Opponent's Cards in Your Graveyard

No.

Understanding 'Each Color' in Acorn Games

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by eredithdriscol 4 Comments

Per culation's ask about "each color" in acorn games, would having Water Gun Balloon Game or Sword of Dungeons and Dragons, which reference pink and gold but aren't those colors themselves, count for those colors being "active"?What about if I had Avatar of Me in the graveyard (and brown eyes)?

To count an additional color you have to have a permanent of that color on the battlefield, not just a permanent that refers to it.

Infinite Clown Tokens Scenario

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by aalgot 5 Comments

If I have infinite clown tokens (thanks to combining mox lotus with clown car.) and Claire on the field. And then a board wipe is used followed by me discarding emrakul to shuffle my graveyard into my library. Then what happen?

Your deck has infinite clown tokens, so basically you do nothing but draw clown tokens for the rest of the game.

White's Graveyard Return Capability

New 11 Jun 2024 Asked by sjk9000 16 Comments

White is able to return little things from your graveyard to your hand/the battlefield. There are a dozen or so cards (Sun Titan, Court of Ardenvale, Redemption Choir, etc.) that let you return any permanent of N or less MV, and a bunch more that specify creature/artifact/enchantment.My question is, how much of bend/break is it for White to potentially return lands from the graveyard? Is it something you'd rather avoid all together, and cards like Sun Titan et al. are a mistake? Is it permissable at certain costs/requirements? I imagine when you're paying 5+ mana you probably don't want to target a land even if you could. Could a card that just straight up let you play lands from the graveyard be printed in white?

We let white do it when in a large bunch where it is unlikely the thing you will get. It can’t do it where we specifically name land.

We will do more, but they both want to be done with a light touch.

Impressions of Outlaws' Mechanics

New 10 Jun 2024 Asked by goldstarbubbles1993 20 Comments

Hi Mark, I just wanted to say that I found Outlaws of Thunder Junction extremely, and I want to emphasize this word, elegant. I thought crimes were one of the best mechanics to build a set around in a really long time. Before crimes, I thought all of the "natural" game pieces had been used as set themes - you'd done creature types, graveyard, and all the card types. But targeting is a natural part of the game! Making that a theme is awesome, and it came from the the top down villain theme!

Glad you’re enjoying it.
