Show and Tell

Mana Cost Avoidance

New 27 Jul 2022 Asked by natew000 22 Comments

I recognize there are play design reasons to limit these effects, but is Show and Tell / Braids, Conjurer Adept still in pie for blue and is Eureka / Hypergenesis still in pie for green? Can other colors theoretically do this effect for permanent types that they care about?

Avoiding mana costs is dangerous, so we have to be careful how often we do it. All colors have some ability to put relevant things from their hand onto the battlefield, but again, it’s not something we should be doing with any frequency.

Rules about B.F.M. Card

New 30 May 2022 Asked by frozentoday 25 Comments

Un rules question: if a player casts Show and Tell and I have both halves of B.F.M. in my hand, can I put both onto the battlefield?

Sadly, no because it says “card” and they are two cards while in your hand.

Perception of Urza Block Ostracization

New 17 May 2022 Asked by rekian 42 Comments

In a recent poll in Twitter listing top 4 sets in MTG history, Urza’s Saga and block as a whole received a spot in a lot of them, almost on pair with Invasion, Innistrad or Ravnica. Nonetheless, it seems WOTC still ostracizes the block. So, so many memorable cards that helped define so many decks: Carpet of Flowers, Sneak Attack, Show and Tell, Gaea’s Cradle, Serra’s Sanctum, Gilded Drake, Yawgmoth’s Will, Grim Monolith, Crop Rotation, Frantic Search, Replenish, Academy Rector, Opalescence, Yawgmoth’s Bargain, Powder Keg, Rofellos… and I could go on and on. I love that beautiful, relaxed, cartoony artwork too. Any love for Urzas Block here?

How exactly do we “ostracize” Urza’s block?

Show and Tell Consideration

Was Show and Tell ever considered for Strixhaven? It seems like a flavor slam dunk.

Show and Tell isn’t really a college thing.

Validity of Show and Tell

New 03 Apr 2021 Asked by deatht200 27 Comments

If the card show and tell didn't exist, would you have used that name for strixhaven or is it a bit too silly?

Show and Tell isn’t really a college thing.

Show and Tell Trait

Could show and tell, if perhaps random, be in red if it were printed today?

Making an effect random doesn’t make it red.

B.F.M. Ruling

New 16 Mar 2019 Asked by parc2 33 Comments

un-rules question: B.F.M., in regards to sneak attack youve said "B.F.M. Is considered one creature card, but you have to have both halves in the same zone (hand, graveyard, library, battlefield, etc.)", and in regards to show and tell, "No, because you can only choose one card and in your hand B.F.M. is still two cards". reading through rulings, you go back and forth as to B.F.M.'s state as one or two creature cards in non-battlefield zones, do you have a definitive ruling?

My Sneak Attack answer is the correct one. If a card is looking for a creature card in another zone and both halves of B.F.M. are there, the card in question can find the “creature”.

Contraptions and Show and Tell

New 11 Nov 2017 Asked by parkerlewis31884 35 Comments

"In a technical sense Contraptions are legal, but as all cards that assemble contraptions are silver-bordered (at least for now), it’s a moot point." What happens if I cast Show and Tell and put a Contraption (which is an artifact, so a valid S&T target) into play :) ? Do I put it onto a sprocket - thus Contraptions will effectively be Legacy-playable ? Or will it just stay useless on the battlefield ?

Show and Tell puts cards from your hand onto the battlefield. Contraptions are never in your hand.

Silver Border Rules

New 17 Nov 2016 Asked by cwesterman13 23 Comments

Silver border rules questions: 1) does Richard garfield PHD affect lands, and if so does that mean any land can be any other land; 2) with aesthetic consultation, do you have to name an artist who's illustrated a magic card? 3) can you show and tell BFM?

1. No, lands do not have a mana cost. They do have a converted mana cost of 0, but Richard looks for mana costs.2. Just as you can only name a color that exists when asked to choose a color, you can only pick an existing artist when you choose an artist. Note artist on tokens (where properly credited) can be chosen. Token art is taken into account with “artist matters” cards.3. No, because you can only choose one card and in your hand B.F.M. is still two cards.

Reprint Set Placement

New 20 Aug 2016 Asked by snowbear4-blog 41 Comments

why are there so many random reprints in conspiracy 2? ghostly possesion makes sense in innistrad but not fiora. Gods willing only makes sense in theros because its the gods willing. gruul war chant is from ravnica for a reason because it references the guild. show and tell is awesome but doesn't really make sense flavorfully.

Only the new cards take place on Fiora. None of the reprints do (unless they originally were set on Fiora).

Hand-Battlefield Zone Transition

New 05 Sep 2015 Asked by reiversmusings 10 Comments

Also, hand -> battlefield transitions (ie show and tell) and library -> battlefield transitions (ie birthing pod) are well known as triggering etb effects. Why is this case unique?

Because it’s not moving from one zone to another., It’s being overlayed. This isn’t something black border does. You can’t just appear in a zone in black border.

Older Formats Fun Factor

New 15 Aug 2015 Asked by lordofgeeks 13 Comments

A lot of older formats tend to be defined by what Wizards considers mistakes, from Storm Combo to Show and Tell with Ulamog to Tarmogoyf's dominance of modern. Do you think older formats, because of their dominance by mistakes, tend to be unfun?

The biggest tool for controlling the fun of older formats is the banned and restricted lists.

Legacy's Skill Intensity

New 31 Oct 2014 Asked by nobthehobbit 37 Comments

So Legacy may be drifting away from Magic, but I'd argue it's drifting in a way that makes it a more skilful game. Consider Show and Tell: against an opponent with red mana up and cards in hand, the Show and Tell player has to worry about Red Elemental Blast/Pyroblast. Conversely, the red player has to worry about tapping out for fear of a Show and Tell. If one/two of those cards didn't exist, the format would be rather less skill-intensive. (I'm assuming at least some of these break the pie.)

Don’t confuse options with skill. The pros have stated how skill testing Khans of Tarkir draft is and that has 12,000+ less cards than Legacy.

Show and Tell Naming

Does the existence of Show and Tell make Show//Tell impossible?

Impossible? No.
Highly unlikely? Yes.

Show and Tell Reprint

New 12 Oct 2013 Asked by sublaughable 6 Comments

What are your thoughts on Show and Tell? Do you think we could see it printed again?

Not a developer and no. Skipping mana costs tends to cause problems. The mana system is there for a very good reason.

Naming Concerns

New 12 Apr 2013 Asked by netherweather 5 Comments

Can there be a Show//Tell alongside Show and Tell?

That would cause confusion so we wouldn’t do that.
